Garland V. Myers Garland V. Myers. 65. r 1. Larwill. died at 4:35 a m. Tuesday. July 11. 1989, in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient one day. Bom May 28, 1924, in Etna Township. Whitley County, he was the son of John H. and Ina Miller Myers On August 15.1948. he married Joan W’. Werstler; she survives. Mr. Myers was a farmer and had worked with the section crew on the Pennsylvania Railroad and had also worked for Syracuse Rubber Products. He retired from Whitley County Highway Department in 1986. A World War II United'states Army veteran, he worked for the Graves Registration Corps in France. Belgium and Germany. Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons. Duane Myers. Big Lake. Galen Myers, Glenn Myers and Lester Myers, all of Larwill; one daughter. Mrs. Gary (Rebecca) Damron. Pierceton; six grandchildren; his mother. Ina Wolfe. Columbia City; four sisters, Wanda Nonemacher. Elkhart, Mrs. Kenneth (Gloria) Helbling, Dunlap. Mrs. Roy (Alta) Miller. Columbia City, and Mrs John (Judy) Latta. Pierceton. He was preceded in death by his fattier and one brother. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a m. Friday. July 14. in Smith & Sons Funeral Home. Columbia City, with Rev. —— K 2 B aSaE? CAUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION — Syracuse Fire Department officials are investigating the cause of a fire that extensively damaged the home of Harold Stably, 301 E. Boston St.. Syracuse. Firemen were called to the home at 2:26 p.m., Saturday, July 15. When firemen arrived they found the living room and kitchen area, in front of the home, fully ablaze. Heavy black smoke and heat were emanating from the front of the home. The fire had caused the front and side windows and glass in the front door to blow out. Approximately 500 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire. The home sustained heavy fire damage to the living room and kitchen area. There was heat and smoke damage throughout the home. Stahly. who is confined to a wheelchair, was not at home when the fire broke out. but was at a home across the street. No damage estimate is available. (Photo by Ron Baumgartner)

Home, following a lengthy illness. Born August 26, 1908. in Elkhart, he was the son of Archard and Maude Pettit. He was married to Margaret M. Smith, who preceded him in death. The Pettits had resided in Syracuse for the past 15 years. A 1925 graduate of Elkhart High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg in 1929. He attended Hammond Divinity School in 1930 and graduated from Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1932. His first assignment was as pastor of Lutheran Churches in Syracuse. Cromwell and Nappanee. After spending four years in missionary work for the United Lutheran Church of America in Puerto Rico from 1938-1942, he continued his education with a master's degree in Spanish from University of Chicago in 1944 and a PhD from the University of Illinois in 1955. He retired from Department of Modern Languages at Marietta College. Ohio, after serving as chair from 1955-1973. He spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in Columbia, South America. 1965-66. His survivors include two sons. Thomas A. Pettit, a Foreign Service officer for the Department of State, and Dr. John M. Pettit. Winterport, professor of speech communication at University of Maine , and four grandchildren A memorial service will be held in Syracuse sometime in August. Fred W. Gall Fred W. Gall. 82. 11094 CR 50. Ligonier, formerly of New Paris and Milford, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday. July 14, 1989. in Elkhart Hospital, where he had been a pa-

tient four days. Born June 28, 1907, in Nappanee. he was the son of Harley and Ella Lemler Gall. On March 27. 1929. he married Mary S. Weybright. who died June 22. 1985. In October 1985 he married Esther Kirkdorffer. who died February 20.1988. Mr. Gall spent most of his life in New Paris as a farmer, and was active in Farm Bureau .CoOp. His survivors include two sons. John E. Gall. New Paris, and Arthur J. Gall. Milford; two daughters, Irma C. Gall, Scalf, Ky , and Mrs. Wendell (Juva) Snavely, Ligonier; two stepsons. Larry Kirkdorffer. Milford, and Ronald Kirkdorffer. New Paris; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Steve (Marlene) Davis, Syracuse, and Peggy Lockwood. Ettinger. 94. 200 Kenney Circle Dr.. Ligonier, died at 9:55 a m. Saturday. July 15. 1989, in Kenney Retirement Community, Ligonier. She was the mother of James E. Lough, Syracuse. Born May 15, 1895. in Ligonier,

she was the daughter of Morton C. and Thirza Prickett Pollock. On June 13. 1964, in Detroit, Mich., she married Marlin C. Ettinger. who died in 1970. A resident f Ligonier most of her life except for three years spent in Angola, she was a 1913 graduate of Angola High School and graduated from Tri State College, Angola, in 1914 with a degree in art. She was a retired school teacher and had taught in the Steuben County school system. She served two terms as city clerk-treasurer in Ligonier.

QUADRUPLE BYPASS SURGERY FOR SYRACUSE MAN Syracuse resident Dee Stiver is presently recuperating in the home of Enid Miller. North Shore Drive, following quadruple bypass heart surgery Tuesday. July 11. in St. Vincent’s Hospital. Indianapolis. He is reportedly doing as well as can be expected. It is advised he not have any visitors for a few days, but would then appreciate seeing his friends for short visits. TATMAN TO BB4IOVED FROM INTENSIVE CARE Syracuse T»wn ClerkTreasurer Mark Tatman is reportedly doing quite well after being transported to Lutheran. Hospital. Fort Wayne. Saturday afternoon. July 15. and may be moved today (Wednesday) from the intensive care unit. Tatman reportedly became ill on Saturday, falling and striking his head. His eyesight has now been restored, and he was able to eat a meal last evening (Tuesday). Doctors continue to run tests to determine the cause of his illness.
