lege junior finished in front of the entire field as he ran the 3.3 Flotilla Road Race in a time of 17:45. In second place was Rich Minier with a time of 17:48. The Syracuse Little League, made up of 24 teams of young ball players (about 300 youngsters), has sponsored a chicken barbecue, bologna sales and are pushing the concession stand at Rotary park north of town, in an effort to raise funds to pay for the lighting system and outfit the kids in new uniforms. Back again this year as The Mail-Journal’s reviewer of Enchanted Hills productions is Wiley (Bill) Spurgeon, longtime summer resident of Wawasee and a former editor and publisher of the Syracuse-Wawasee Journal, an M-J predecessor. There is a baker’s dozen at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Jones, who live on the south shore of Lake Wawasee! Kathy Jones’ Labrador Irish setter has produced a litter of 13 puppies, an event
which her brother, Scott Jones, says is very rare. The usual litter is about eight or nine, he says. 10 YEARS AGO, JULY 18,1979 Plans for the 1980 State Convention were discussed by the Syracuse-Wawasee Garden Club when it met in the home of Mrs. Larry Harkleroad with Mrs. Maurice Koher as assistant hostess on Tuesday, July 10. Guest speaker Carl Diehl will be present at the SmithWalbridge dining hall on East Shore Drive, Syracuse, for the Syracuse Lake Association’s annual dinner and membership meeting. Kay Hare admits to getting up early and fixing catfish, bacon, eggs and cherry and raspberry jam for her ravenous young family — Kent, and sons Chris, 15, and Pat, 14. Lori Weldy, daughter Becky, Carol Koble and Lindal Weaver were busy at the Syracuse Case Friday morning scrutinizing the new dollar coin. They’d never seen one before. There were 350 people who ate pancakes and sausage at the breakfast held Sunday morning at the South Shore pavilion, sponsored each year by the Wawasee Property Owner’s Assn. Bill Spurgeon is president of the group and helped put the show together. During the Syracuse Business and Professional Women’s Club on Tuesday, July 10, at Oakwood Park, a motion was made and carried to help a student on dental care. Vice president Carol Elder conducted the business meeting as Maryrose Henning, chairman of the auditing committee gave her report. !? 20 YEARS AGO, JULY 9, 1969 The children of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Miller of r 1, Syracuse, enjoyed a family gettogether on Sunday at Sunnyside Park, New Paris. The 10th annual Syracuse Police and Firemen’s fair is now in progress with rides and concessions in the town's city park. Rev. and Mrs. J.S. Pritchard of r 1, Syracuse, have been hosts to a family get-together honoring Mrs. Xenia Grant, 91-year-old mother of Rev. Pritchard. Those attending in addition to Mrs. Grant of Leisure World Seal Beach, Calif., were Rev. Pritchard’s brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. F.W. Pritchard of New York City, their daughter Elaine and Mrs. Steve Dawson and husband of Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Busy Homemakers Club met with Mrs. Hattie Becker Wednesday afternoon with sixteen members and two guests present. Guests were Mrs. Don Charlton and Mrs. Burel Martz of Nappanee. The Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club, meeting Monday noon at the Pickwick Lounge, were delighted by color pictures and a narrative by Corwin Wong. Lou Craig, of Bay Shore Drive, Lake Wawasee has two young guests for ten days who are having a time of their lives. They happen to be his two granddaughters, Sally Burton, 15, and Jane Burton, 10, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Burton, North Scituate, Mass., a Boston suburb. 20 YEARS AGO, JULY 16,1969 Syracuse town board of trustees held its regular July meeting Tuesday evening in the town hall. Clerk-treasurer Ronald Sharp read the proposed budget and the board gave its approval. He also read a transfer of funds which was approved. Mr. and Mrs. Rolland (Babe) Hodgson and son, Mr. and Mrs. Donald B. Smith and children, all of Syracuse, and guests spent Saturday at Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio. Supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Good last Wednesday were Fred Harlan of Milford; Edward Good of Leesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ganger, Steve, Tom, Jan and Lee Ann, and Bryce Weldy, all of Goshen. Mrs. Lois Schleeter, Mrs. Helen Overstreet and Mrs. Georgia Buster, Syracuse, were Monday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Gertsch at Ogden Island, Lake Wawasee. Joannie Denny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Denny, Syracuse, spent last week at Smith-Walbridge camp. Mr. and Mrs. John S. Fisher and son, Guy Bill, of Syracuse Lake, were hosts at a chicken barbecue on Sunday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James Boydstone and daughters, Doty and Missy, of San Antonio, Texas. Hawblitz of South Bend are here for the summer. 30 YEARS AGO, JULY 16,1959 Cynthia Haram and Susie Morganthaler of the Hoosier Ski Club distinguished themselves in the Great Lakes Open meet at St. Charles, 111., last week end. A 20 acre tract of land including 15 acres of timber will be purchased by the Syracuse Rotary Club as a camp site for the boy scouts of Syracuse. Mrs. Bertha Meek had a family dinner Sunday honoring the birthdays of her daughter, Anne (Mrs. Roy Stuckman) and her granddaughter, Linda Stookey, four-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George (Nola Meek) Stookey. Dr. and Mrs. E.L. Fosbrink were guests of Dr. and Mrs. Page Spray at Klinger Lake, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Muscari of Wheaton, Illinois were week end guests of Mrs. Ella Unrue. Mrs. L.E. Week end guests of Mrs. Mamie Wesner were her sisters, Misses Opal and Mary Boston of Indianapolis. 50 YEARS AGO, JULY 21,1939 Each year the Fall Festival which is held under the sponsorship of the local post of the American Legion is held on the streets of Syracuse. Although the exact location of the concessions and the attractions has not been definitely decided upon, committees ’have been chosen to take care of the spaces and the general business of arrangement, etc. Dana declares quarterly dividend Dana Corporation’s Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend on July 17 of 40 cents per share. This dividend will be paid on September 15 to shareholders of record September 1 and is Dana’s 207th consecutive dividend payment. The current annual dividend rate is $1.60. This compares to $1.54 paid in 1988. Gerald B. Mitchell, chairman and chief executive officer, said, “This has been a good three month period for Dana Corporation and will compare very favorably with the record first quarter of this year. During the second quarter we announced and completed the acquisition of Superior Electric, and now look forward to the contributions Superior will make to our industrial markets. This dividend reflects the board’s confidence in the continued strong performance of the company and maintains the long history of consecutive dividends. ” The company announced that the financial results for the second quarter and the first half of 1989 will be released later.

Sea Nymph to hold open house Sea Nymph, Inc., manufacturer of aluminum boats for fishing and recreational use, will host an open house at the Syracuse facility, 801 E. Chicago St., on July 29 from 10 a.m.-l p.m. Sea Nymph employees, their families, and people in the community are invited to visit the Syracuse plant. Sea Nymph employees will give tours of the various work areas and answer questions. There will be a refreshment table and balloons for the kids.
