Tri-County is dedicated to providing and maintaining wildlife habitat
By JEREMY BEER The Tri-County State Fish And Wildlife Area, which is situated upon 3.486 acres of land and is located two miles northeast of North Webster, is dedicated to providing and maintaining a wildlife habitat, according to Arnold Karr, manager of TriCounty. Karr, who oversees the planning and the operation of the facility, has now been manager for 15 years. Along with fishing and hunting, many other activities are offered at Tri-County. including an archery range, a shooting range, canoeing, boating, birdwatching, and hiking. One popular feature is the Grieder Woods Nature Preserve, which includes a selfguiding nature trail. Bluegill, channel catfish, crappie. largemouth bass, northern pike, rainbow trout, redear — these are the major species of fish found at Tri-County. Nine lakes from which' to fish are found on the preserve, along with thirty man-made impoundments, many of which are too shallow to fish These lakes are Shock. Wyland. Long, price. Rothenburger. Allen. Barrel. Hammond, and Spear The Flatbelly Marsh, which includes six of these lakes, has a rather large population of northern pike, while Wyland Lake, is the only lake containing trout. No gas-powered motor boats are allowed within Tri-County. only those trolling boats equipped with electric motors Manyfishermen just use rowboats or canoes. Hunters will find whitetailed deer, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, woodcock, raccoons, and pheasant at Tri-County. Around 7,000 hunters use the facility in a given year, while most of those are deer and upland hunters. Still, deer continue to grow in numbers at Tri-County. In 1974 only two deer were bagged, while, in 1984 65 were killed.

Bird watching is popular at TriCounty because of the diversity in species. The Tippecanoe Valley chapter of the Audobon Society usually reports a wide range of sightings. One has a good chance of sighting many species of shorebirds in the Flatbelly Marsh, and the upland areas are a haven for forest, brushland, and grassland nesting bird species. Tri-County’s land acquisition, development, operation, and maintenance is mainly financed through the sale of hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses. Federal funds also help finance the preserve. Cromwell Festival set for July 22 Plans are proceeding for the Cromwell Community and Park Festival to be held July 22. The Lions Club free pancake and sausage breakfast will be served from 7-10 a m. The 5K run starts at Cromwell Park at 8 am. Many items will be offered at the craft and bake sale in the Cromwell Community Center from 9 a m.-6 p.m The grand parade begins at 4 p.m., with many events to follow. This is the third year for the festival, with new things offered along with some of the best from past festivals.

Waubee Lake provides relaxing family tun
I By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer Because of the abundance of lakes in Kosciusko County, as soon as the hot, summer months set in, visitors swarm to the waters of such lakes as Wawasee, Syracuse and Tippecanoe. Becaustf many activities are planned nt accordance with these larger' lakes many summer visitors, as well as area residents, are unaware of what the smaller lakes can offer. Located approximately two miles southeast of Milford, Waubee Lake has a large public beach, playground, boat ramp, and more. Although the lake is too small to waterski on and there is a 10 mph speed limit, fishing and leisure boating are popular on this quiet lake. Located on the late and maintained through the town of Milford is 10 acres which have been named Lakeside Park. Today. occupying those 10 acres is a sandy beach, a concession stand, a playground and pavillion, and a public boat ramp Picnic tables and gas grills fitting for reunions o'r get-togethers are also scattered throughout the shaded park area. According to Joellen Free, president of the park board, the big project at the lake this summer is the addition of a floating dock by the boat ramp. Calling it a luxury to fishermen. Joellen says the dock is expected to be finished by late summer. The boat ramp itself, has only existed since 1986. Known for its excellent fishing, the best catch may just be the walleye. In August of 1985, Waubee Lake residents purchased about l,0(X) walleye fingerlings, about three inches long, from a commercial source in Wisconsin. Studies have shown that the fish are still doing well in the Waubee waters. Another attraction to the lake is the ample amount of parking space. Currently there are two large lots, but Joellen says the land is being surveyed for greater expansion possibilities.
Located on the shores of Waubee Lake is Camp Alexander Mack Occupying 300 acres, Camp Mack is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren and offers an attractive retreat area for campers. Besides a beautiful wildlife area and the many activities available, the camp is
