Waldo E. Yeater
Waldo E. Yeater, 104, 306 S. Eighth St., Goshen, founder and long-time publisher and editor of The Farmer’s Exchange of New Paris, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 6,1989, in Fountainview Place, Goshen. Born May 30, 1885, in his grandfather’s two-room log cabin home in Holmesville, Ohio, he was the son of Samuel and Luella Yeater. On December 25, 1908, he married Nellie Viola Ebeling, who died in 1952. In 1958 he married Martha Carpenter. She passed away January 30,1989. Mr. Yeater attended Taylor University, Upland, where he founded the school newspaper. He established The Farmer ’s Exchange in Nappanee in 1926, later moving it to New Paris in 1928. He was the author of three volumes of his memoirs titled “Words from Waldo,” the last printed in early winter of 1976. He retired from The Farmer’s Exchange in 1961. He was a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ, Goshen, and Elkhart County Agricultural Society. His survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Alastair (Alice) Lamont, Aberdeen, Scotland; three sons, Rev. W. Wayne Yeater, Carmel, Harold P. Yeater, New Paris, and John W. Yeater, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and several grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five daughters, Doris Finnerty, Eleanor Yeater, Bette Cobb and two infants; two sons, Robert Yeater and Lawrence E. Yeater; and a brother, Paul Yeater. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, in Grace United Methodist Church, New Paris, with Rev. Robert Carmin officiating. Burial was in New Paris Cemetery. Rieth, Rohrer & Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to United Cancer Society of Elkhart County. i

Ernest W. Knee Ernest W. Knee, 87, r 6 Big Chapman Lake, Warsaw, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 4,1989, in Grace Village Health Care Center, Winona Lake. Born April 22, 1902, in Green County, Ohio, he was the son of George W. and Mary Holland Knee. He married Edith Bevington on November 14,1928; she survives. In 1964, he retired from the American Can Co., Waukegan, 111., and moved that same year to the Warsaw area. He was a member of the Chapman Lake Conservation Club. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Harlan (Nancy) Wuthrich, Milford; one son, George A. Knee, Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday. July 7, at 11 a m. in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Rev. Ben Whirledge, pastor of Milford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Milford Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Home Health Care or Council for Aging. Cecil F. Archer Cecil F. Archer, 83, Benson, Ariz., former Goshen area resident, died Sunday, July 2,1989, at 12:40 a m. in Benson Hospital. He was born in Wilshire, Ohio, on October 5, 1905. He had been a mechanic with Rieth & Riley and retired from Haines & Haines, Elkhart, in 1969. He was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge. Additional survivors include two sons, Kenneth and Richard, both of Goshen; six other daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Betty) Miller, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Dale (Norma) Strombeck, North Webster, Mrs. Robert (Gloria) Dennis and Mrs. Don (Connie) Kramer, both of Goshen, Mrs. Jerry (Phyllis) McNutt, Warsaw, Bonnie Miller, Middlebury, and Mrs. Marion (Joyce) Ward, Wawaka; 20 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Archer, Milford; and three sisters, Violet Richards and Bernice Eash, both of LaGrange, and Ethel Mae Dunithan, Elkhart. Knisley, 73, 22881 CR 44, New Paris, died at 9:20 a.m* Monday, July 3, 1989, in Goshen Hospital. A lifetime New Paris area resident, he was born on March 11, 1916. He was employed with Mogul Rubber, a veteran of World War 11, and member of Disabled American Veterans, Goshen Post. Surviving are one daughter, Marlene, Elkhart; one stepdaughter, Pamela Shaffer, Elkhart; five brothers, John Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Clarence, Mishawaka, Glen and Kenneth, both of Syracuse, and Donald, Goshen; two sisters, Mrs. James (Ruth) Mench and Mary Jane Byrd, both of Syracuse, and his mother, Cecil Knisley, New Paris. Carrington Yeager who preceded her in death. A longtime resident at Tippecanoe Lake, Mrs. Yeager was a member of Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, Garden Club, DAR, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and North Webster Methodist Church. Her survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William (Janis) Nagy, Downers Grove, 111., and Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) Shipman, Dexter, Mich.; one son, James Yeager, Little Rock, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Max E. Martin Pastor Max E. Martin, 52, 28482 CR 52, Nappanee, died Wednesday, July 5, 1989, at 7:10 p.m. in Elkhart Hospital where he had been a patient since October 1988. He had been in failing health for l‘/2 years. He was the brother of Mrs. Bob (Carolyn) Auer, Milford. He was born in Kokomo on October 22, 1936, to Willard and Esther Gerber Martin. He married Carolyn J. Miller on June 19, 1960, near Nappanee; she survives. Martin graduated from Bremen High School, attended Manchester College, and graduated from Liternal Tech. A resident of the Nappanee area most of his life, he was pastor and member of The Ark Church, Nappanee, tool and die maker in Elkhart, attended Elkhart Institute of Technology, was a designer and salesman for Mutschler Brothers and Yoder Kitchens, both of Nappanee. He had formerly owned the Lienhart Furniture Store in Wakarusa for 13 years, before becoming the pastor of the The Ark Church of Nappanee in 1986. He was also a former member of the Nappanee Kiwanis Club. Additional survivors include two sons, Ty and Tim Martin, both at home; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Martin, formerly of Nappanee and now residing in Florida. He was preceded in death by one brother. Services were held Saturday, July 8, at 10 a.m. in The Ark Church with Lowell Hutsell, pastor of the River Park Tabernacle, Mishawaka, and James Murphy, pastor of the Christian Center Church, South Bend, officiating. RECOVERING FROM HIP SURGERY Milford resident Ted Baumgartner, 83, sustained a broken hip after falling on Friday evening, July 7. He underwent surgery in Goshen Hospital on , Sunday morning and is reportedly making satisfactory recovery. His family reports there is a possibility he may be released from the hospital at the end of the week He is in Room 254. CURTIS JORDAN RECOVERING Curtis Jordan of North Webster, school board president of the Wawasee Community School Corporation, reportedly became ill while on his way home last week from Florida. He was admitted to a North Carolina hospital where it was diagnosed he has Legionnaires' disease. Sunday, July 9, 1989, in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born May 24, 1912, in Los Angeles, Calif. On November 29, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pa., he married Agnes Kostek; she survives. In 1959 Mr. Richards moved to the Oswego area and retired from the Penn Central Railroad. He served with the Civil Air Patrol (1954-1983) with the Warsaw Squadron; commanded Group #3, Baer Field, Fort Wayne; director of communications for the Indiana Wing; commander of Indiana Wing (1962-64); director of com-

Beard, 46, r 1 box 868, Leesburg, sustained severe bleeding to the face following a two-vehicle accident at Old Road 15 and CR 900. N. Investigating officer, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Officer Jeff Bronsing noted on the accident report, had Beard not been wearing a seat belt, he probably would not have survived. The Robert M. Slone, 80, 104 19th St.. NW., #46. Ruskin. Fla., sustained minor bleeding to his elbow and refused medical treatment. Beard was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Beard was traveling south on Old Road 15 in a 1979 Oldsmobile convertible when Slone's 1977 Ford struck his car. Slone told police he must not have seen the stop sign in time to stop. Slone’s car skidded 42 feet, four inches into the intersection where it hit the convertible. After impact, Beard’s car was knocked 250 feet from the intersection and rolled several times, landing on its wheels. Slone was cited for failure to yield the right of way. It was also noted that there was nothing obstructing Slone’s view of the stop sign. Damage to the Ford, driven by Slone, registered to Robert and Stephen Slone, r 1 box 110, Alexandra, was estimated up to $5,000 and up to $5,000 to Beard's convertible. Wright, 77, r 2, Seymour, died at 6 a m. Tuesday, July 11,1989, in his home. He had been in failing health for four years. Born September 17, 1911, in Vallonia (Driftwood Township, Jackson County), he was the son of William Waskom Wright. On May 11,1933, he married Wylda Crockett. Prior to moving back to Vallonia and Seymour in 1987, Mr. Wright lived most of 17 years in Cromwell, while also residing in Elwood and Goshen. Hg was a farmer and inventor, and a member of Vallonia Christian Church. His survivors include two daughters, Rosalyn Haag, r 2, Seymour, and Rita McCrossan, Ocala, Fla.; and one son, Ronald

Pastor Harold Barnett will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Driftwood Cemetery, near Vallonia. Cleo R. Vollmer Cleo R. Vollmer, 95, 1120 E. Market St., Warsaw, died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 1989, in Kosciusko Community Hospital. She was born January 1, 1894, in Bremen. She was married to Urban Vollmer, who died May 4, 1959. Having lived most of her lifetime in the Warsaw area, Mrs. Vollmer was a charter member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1937 and was a member of the Ladies’ Guild of the church. Her survivors include one son, Maynard Vollmer, Leesburg; one daughter, Mrs. Forrest M. (Marjorie) Tinkey, Warsaw; five grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dale, and three sisters. Visitation hours will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 12, in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13, in Redeemer Lutheran Church, Warsaw, with Vicar Paul Ziegler officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. Memorials may be directed to the Redeemer Lutheran Church building fund.
