I Jll GROWING CHURCH — The Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God Church, Milford, has grown from about four members to a congregation of 95 to 100 strong. Conducting services and celebrations in both Spanish and English, the Filadelfia church invites more participation. Members were grateful to find a place to worship as they moved services to the second floor of its 104 E. Emeline address several years ago. A growing congregation, they have purchased three and a half acres of land near Milford Junction in hopes of future expansion. (Photo by Mary Jane Lorton)

Everyone can participate at Filadelfia evangelical church

| bTmary jane lorton Staff Writer Meeting wherever they could, in the Milford Fire Station or sometimes in private' homes, members of the Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God Church started out very small. At first, they were just three or four people, gathered in a room to share thoughts on the Bible or to pray Today, they are 95 to 100 members strong, and still growing The church is guided by Pastors Blanca and Alberto Jimenez. Ligonier The Jimenez family came to this area in April of 1984 They were said to be traveling through the area when they were told of the Milford congregation Although they were pastoring in Van Wert. Ohio, at the time, they felt the need to come to the area Their arrival was really "a necessity for the church. ' noted Domingo Melendez. ingo. thereby adding truth to Domingo's statement that the church "is open to everyone Most of the services in the church are bilingual and that means more people can participate in the services; according to Dolores Melendez. Domingos wife. Most members speak and read English and Spanish, but bilingual services insure that everyone fully understands and shares in the worship. Although more and more, children are learning to read, write and speak in both languages, some members do not have these skills in both languages. Children s classes are taught in English, but if a child can not • comprehend an idea in English, then it is taught in Spanish The pastor has a Bible study group that discusses ideas in both languages; The main idea or goal that is hoped to be met by these bilingual services is to keep the members united. ‘ We do everything together." said Dolores She described some of

the Mexican dinners that the church has held in order to buy things for the Bible school. "All of the members help." she remarked. On the wall of the church is a list of members and their birthdays. Dolores reported that, "when its your birthday, you get to go up front and everyone sings to you." They were very grateful when they found a place to worship: on the second floor of the building on 104 E Emeline. Milford It is decorated with posters and pictures with lettering in both Spanish and English. On one wall hangs a picture with the plans for a new church. "We are working and praying to build a new church." said Dolores, "and with God's help we will have it ." Worship at the church is held every Sunday, from 10 a m to noon. Sunday school meets at 9 a m. There is an evening worship on Sundays at 6:00 p m. Wednesday night is family night and special programs and celebrations take place at this time Family night begins at 6 p m and runs until 8:30 pm

Plan first services in September

(By SCOTT DAVJDSON Staff Writer "Our first scheduled service is for the weekend of September 9-10 and we hope to have the sanctuary ready by September 1,” commented Paul Shrider about the goals for completion of the new church building for the Non*h Webster Church of the Brethren. Work on the new facility, being built just southwest of town on Huntington Street (CR 600 N), was officially started with groundbreaking activities last September although the first actual work day for the structure was held on January 21. According to Shrider, who is overseeing the project as chairman of the building committee, the members of the church are involved with doing most of the work on the building themselves. "We have workdays (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) and members come in and do whatever they can such as genera] construction, heating, electric, etc.,” said Shrider. He added that there are usually about five persons at the church for the workdays although there have been as many as 25-30 a couple of times including individuals from Goshen, Elkhart and as far away as the Dayton, Ohio area who have pitched in to help. Shrider said that the help from outside of the immediate church has been provided by members of sister congregations affiliated with the North Webster church. Shrider remarked that the new church building is a "fresh start " for the Church of the Brethren and is being built because of a combination of reasons. "This is going to be a church building that is accessible to everyone since it's a one story structure and we ll have the opportunity for growth here (expansion of the building) if necessary in the future." said Shrider. He added that the old church building, located on SR 13 in North Webster, had problems such as poor accessibility for the handicapped. limited parking facilities and no room for expansion which made it feasible for the church to go ahead and build a new building for use by the con-

gregation. Ralph Smith, who has served as pastor of the church since February 1988. i>aid that the new building is genera ting excitement and growing interest from members of the church. "The congregation had been looking forward to a new facility for quite awhile and now they 're seeing their dreams and hopes coming to fruition and it's quite exciting for everyone,” remarked .Smith. Shrider, who served as pastor of the church from 1969-85, said that the new church building will include a sanctuary that will seat 216. church offices and a fellowship hall that will include temporary partitions for classrooms. He added that the future plans for the building include adding a wing of classrooms to the structure. With a membership of about 90. the church has an average attendance of between 60-65 worshippers per week that will be using the new church building once it is completed. In addition to Shrider. the other members of the building committee for the project include Sharon Richcreek, Doris Dorsey, Phil Mock. Howard Keyser and J.D. Adams. Additionally. Shrider added that Paul Browning, a member of the church, had probably spent more time working on the new building

than anyone else involved with it. Shrider, who commented that the church hopes to sell its old building on SR 13 once the new facility is complete, said that the church members get more interested in the project once they come out and actually pitch in and work on it. "It makes it more their church once they've came out on a workday and put some work into the building," he concluded. ■We're looking forward to moving into our new facility and we re caught up in the growth of it because in addition to constructing a new building, our members are also building spiritually by being involved with this project." concluded Smith. ‘ ‘Let the wilderness and the cities...give glory unto the Lord.’ ’ —lsaiah 11:12 wmwsm:
