Whitney Spurgeon plans to make move to Chicago following summer season
. By MARY JANE LORTON Staff Writer Surrounded by actors all of his life, is it any wonder that someone who was first involved in the theatre in the fifth grade and has enjoyed every aspect of this profession up to the present, would consider calling acting his career'? By the end of this summer. Whitney Spurgeon, from Lake Wawasee. will be packing his bags and taking his years of experience to Chicago to pursue this career “It’s a very difficult profession," Whitney notes, and constantly being met with. "When are you going to get a real job?” does not make it any easier. “It’s going to get tougher in Chicago," he says. Profile Whitney grew up in Muncie, and spent many summers at Lake Wawasee. He made Lake Wawasee his temporary home in January of 1988, during his "two year hiatus." separating his graduation from Syracuse University and his future departure to Chicago. His serious interest in the theatre goes back to the time he was in the fifth grade and became involved in a local civic theatre. Whitney said that Jim Walker, a technician, told him that he should consider acting as a career. These words to a fifth grader left a lasting impression. While a student at Northside High School. Whitney was fortunate to be a part of "the best drama department in the state," under the direction of Nancy Crouse. Whitney credits her with the ability of "getting the most out of talented actors. " and "taking amateurs and making them look good. " Whitney "honed (his > skills" at Syracuse University, in Syracuse. NY. "It is one of the better acting schools in the country," he com-

ments. He earned a bachelor of science degree in acting with a minor in political science. Upon graduation, he worked at a newspaper in Muncie for seven months. While there, he worked as a reporter among other things and says newspaper work is his second major skill. Newspaper work was not new to Whitney as he wrote his first review for The Mail Journal at age 15. He worked at the Muncie paper fob seven months before moving to Lake Wawasee.
After his move, he auditioned for Enchanted Hills last year, but notes, “I gave the worst audition of my life.” This year, “I was more prepared,” and consequently will be playing three roles in this summer’s productions. He will be playing Von Strack in “Amadeus,” Ali Hackim in “Oklahoma,” and Charlemagne, the father of Pippin in "Pippin.” “I am very excited to be working out there,” he says. He reviewed two shows at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse last year and is very impressed by how dynamic and strong the group is. “It will be a challenge and fun to work with them,” he adds. One of the things that will make this summer especially fun for Whitney is the fact that his best friend from Syracuse University, who graduated with Whitney, will be working with him. Ray Kahn, now from Chicago, “auditioned in Chicago and ended up getting the role here.” In “Pippin,” Ray will play Pippin. "I have always been a character actor,” Whitney says. Playing the part of the old man, a “strange” person, a person with a funny accent. or the comic relief in a serious play, Whitney says he is most interested in the general effect of the character that he is portraying. And he is a convincing character in these roles, as he relives different scenes from his life in an effort to better illustrate himself. From his pizza delivery days to his experiences as a waiter, Whitney replays these roles with energy and wit. Whitney remarks that less than 10 percent of those in the acting profession are working at any given time. A “scarey” statistic, right now Whitney is a part of “that lucky 10 percent.” He looks forward to his move to Chicago with optimism. “I’ll audition as often as I can. and look into radio, television, movies and theatre,” seeking to stay among the ranks of “that lucky 10 percent.”
