New gazebo —
A real asset to Lakeside Park
By MARY JANE LORTON Staff Writer As a part of the goals set by their master plan, the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department is providing the community with what it asked for: a gazebo. Kip Schumm. president of the park board, said a survey was sent out to the residents of Syracuse, and the park board is proving that it is listening to those who responded on what they would like in the future. One of the top items listed by those who returned the survey, was the construction of a new gazebo at Lakeside Park. The park department worked very hard in the preparing for the construction of the gazebo. Sam Leman, a local architect, designed the structure which has a unique design and detailing. Groundbreaking took place on Thursday, May 18, with a completion date set for mid-July. An official dedication ceremony will take place at that time. In order to help fund this special project, Schumm said they were "working with the idea called a pillar of community.” The 30 pillars could be “purchased” individually for a donation of SSOO or more. The pillars of com-
munity fund proved to be very successful, as all of the pillars have been sold. Schumm remarked they are still accepting donations for the Square dance to take place on July 4 Square dancing is the dance of choice for many amateur hoofers. Fans of the art form will get to watch and even join in with the Heart of Lakes Squares on July 4. The event will take place at the Lakeside Park beginning at 7 p.m. Group member Mike Tallon says the Syracuse squares number at about 30 and will be joined by dancers from other areas. Tallon says the dancing is Western style. The group dances to almost any kind of music, but in keeping with the spirit of the holiday, some patriotic selections are expected. This is the third year for the dance, which began during the Sesquicentennial. "We just kept on doing it,” says Tallon, “Everyone enjoys it.” Those who come to see the show can join in. Special attire is not required.

gazebo and are also looking to add decorative lighting to the park. These energy efficient lights will be place randomly throughout the park and will add “security as well as aesthetics to the way the park looks,” noted Schumm. The gazebo will provide a location for future park entertainment. Schumm said there are several summer programs already scheduled including a barbershop quartet, string quartet, and puppet show. Built for small entertainment, the gazebo will also be available on a rental basis for weddings and other special occasions. Schumm said it will seat about 30 people. "A real asset to the park,” the gazebo project has received a lot of positive interest, noted Schumm. With construction still in progress, the best is yet to come.
