PREPARING FOR SALE — Members of the Syracuse-Turkey Creek Friends of the Library are sorting and stacking books in preparation for their annual book sale on Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The book sale will be held at the Lakeland Youth Center. Ail of the proceeds from the sale will be funneled back into library projects. A variety of books will be available at the sale and all books are either “weedouts” from the library or are donations from the community. Bike race is slated for Saturday, July 1
The Flotilla Bike Race kicks off at Wawasee High School at 11 a m. on Saturday, July 1. The 25-mile race route starts out on a southward trek on SyracuseWebster road and eventually ends up back at the school. Race organizer Bill Beamer say the biking competition usual ly has about 30-35 participants each yeas. Most come from outside the Lakeland area. "We get them from as far away as Indianapolis, Goshen, Fort Wayne, Mentone and all around,” Beamer said. Gold, Silver and bronze medallions will be awarded to the top three finishers. There will be a mens’ division and, if there’s enough interest, a womens’ division. The race usually takes about 1 1 z hours to complete. Organizers
will plant spotters at dangerous street intersections in order to make things safe for the riders. Race safety will also be enhanced by law enforcement personnel. "We have the sheriff’s and police department ahead of us to warn the drivers," Beamer said. Traditionally, some of the bike racers come from the ranks of

the road racers from earlier in the morning. The running races kick off at 8 a.m., giving participants just enough time to rest up before heading to the high school. Organizers are thinking about adding a swimming event in the future and forming something akin to a triathlon.
