Wawasee Flotilla schedule listed
The small town atmosphere and first rate resort facilities that the Syracuse area has to offer mingle smoothly to form the allure that brings thousands to the town each summer. The Wawasee Flotilla Festival, which takes place this year from June 29 to July 12, celebrates that small town charm while taking full advantage of the lakes and sport facilities. The focus of the event is July 1 through 4 when visitors can enjoy activities ranging from road racing to square dancing. In short, the entire schedule of events has something that everyone can enjoy. Young and old, book lovers and banjo buffs, ice cream fans and barbecue nuts can indulge their fancies during the festivities. The events kick-off on June 29 at 8 p.m., when the Elkhart Municipal Band and Lakes Area Symphonic Band will serenade area music lovers This event, to be held in Lakeside Park will be sponsored by the Park Foundation. Prior to the concert, folks with a sweet tooth can enjoy and after dinner treat at the Ice Cream Social to be held at Lakeside Park beginning at 6 p.m. Sponsorship will be provided by Syracuse Mothers’ Club. Turkey Creek Friends of the Library Book Sale will kick-off at the Lakeland Youth Center on June 30. The sale will take place from 10:30 to 5 p.m. and will last through July 1. Runners and cyclists can get ready, set and go! on Jiily 1 during the road and bike races to be held that day. Eight a.m. is the starting time for the Flotilla Road Race at Lakeside Park. Sponsorship for that event will come from the Syracuse Merchants Association. Cyclists will start peddling 'at 11 a m. in the Flotilla Bike Race to be sponsored by the Flotilla Committee. Interested bikers should show up at the Wawasee High School. Church worship is an integral part of any small town. The Boatin Worship is an interdenominational service at 8:30 Oakwood Park on July 2. Sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, the event is open to all who wish to boat-in and worship and to those who come by dry land. Up, up and away into the atmosphere balloons will sail when they are released at 1 p.m. July 2 at the Fish Hatchery. That same day and time will mark the Big Event — the 1989 Flotilla. The Flotilla Committee will sponsor the it and all are invited to come and watch the parade of boats which tests the decorating skill and ingenuity of the participants. BIG! BAM! BOOM! — Parents who want their children to enjoy the excitement and beauty of fireworks — but worry about the dangers they bring — can take the kids and enjoy the Big Bam Boom Fireworks spectacle that the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce will provide at the center of Lake Wawasee. The event begins at 9:45. Everyone is invited to enjoy the display — from a safe distance. Another chamber sponsored fireworks display will take place on the Fourth of July at the same time at Syracuse’s Lakeside
Park. Watch out Dumbo — someone will be cooking up crispy, sweet and delicious Elephant Ears on July 4 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Lakeside Park. The delectable event will be brought to visitors by the Gamma Sigma Chapter, ESA.

The Heart of the Lake Squares will be swinging their partners left and right at 7 p.m. on July 4 at Lakeside Park. The players will be pickin’ and the audience will be grinnin’ when the Northeast Indiana Banjo Society puts on a show at Lakeside Park at 8 p.m. on July 6.

The musical event is sponsored by the Park Foundation. Barbecue chicken is a favorite treat for nearly everyone and those who love spicy chicken can indulge their passion at the Syracuse Jacees sponsored chicken barbecue. The event will be held at Crosson Mill Park on
July 8 at 10:30. All good things must come to an end and the last event on this list is the salad bar luncheon to be held on July 12 at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. Sponsored by the United Methodist Women, the luncheon will take place from 11 to 11:30 p.m.
