Fireworks to fill the sky on July 2 and 4th
The skies over the Syracuse area will be filled with loud bangs and bright exploding colors on July 2 and again on July 4 as Big Bam Boom Displays will put on two fireworks shows as part of the festivities for the 1989 Wawasee Flotilla. The two shows are being sponsored by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. The first show, “Wawasee Spectacular IV,” will be shot on Lake Wawasee beginning at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 2. This show, billed as one of Indiana’s largest display of fireworks, will feature 163 shot opening barrage, multi-shell flights, hundreds of special effects and a 501-shot grand finale. The second show. “Syracuse Thriller," will begin at 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4, and will be shot at Lakeside Park in Syracuse. This show will include a 27-shot opening barrage, 57 special effects, more than 200 spectacular bursts and a 85-shot grand finale. John Kroh. who is serving as the chairman of this year’s fireworks shows, commented that the shows are most spectacular and enjoyable when shot into a dark sky. He added that from past experience, it has been determined that 9:45 p.m. is the best time to start the shows. The two Big Bam Boom displays feature Grand Master Premium Firework Shows which are superbly choreographed firework displays featuring award winning aerial shells from around the world, many of which are Big Bam exclusives. The fireworks to be used in the two shows in Syracuse are manufactured by pyrotechnicians and include sensational crackling shells, out of this world UFO’S, and the amazing magic peonies. The eight. 10- and 12-inch giant chrysanthemum produced by these firework displays are also very colorful. The Grand Master shows provide fabulous spiderwebs, unusual dragon eggs and spectacular crossettes to name a few. The awesome multibreaks featuring cannonades and mighty reports are the pinnacle of the pyrotechnic arts. A magnificent three-break crossette is one of the best aerial firework ever produced. The award winning fireworks used in the “Grand Master Premium" shows are not the complete story of the displays that will be seen in Syracuse. The superb fireworks combine with great choreography to feature exciting opening barrages, spectacular special effect arrangements and thundering grand finales with every shell being presented at the precise moment and in the exact manner that allows the desired effect of

READY FOR FLOTILLA FIREWORKS — John Kroh. chairman of this year’s Wawasee Flotilla fireworks displays, shows off two of the signs announcing the upcoming shows. The Big Bam Boom firework displays will take place on Sunday. July 2, on Lake Wawasee and on Tuesday, July 4. at Lakeside Lark in Syracuse. Both shows, sponsored by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. are set to begin at 9:45 p.m.
the firework to be appreciated at its’ optimum. According tb Kroh. the preparation for the shows, particularly the bigger show on Lake Wawasee (July 2), takes days to design and one complete day to install the pipes and load the shells on pontoons. He added that Tom Kitch and his select crew of volunteers tow the barges to the shooting area after dusk to avoid as many rough waves as possible and that Griffith’s Marina furnishes their docks so that the show may be loaded while the barges are secured, which makes the task much easier and safer. A buoy line is put around the circumference of the barges after they are anchored in the lake and the area will be patrolled by the Kosciusko County Lake Patrol to

keep any mishaps to a minimum. According to Kroh. after the show is completed the barges must be towed back to Griffith s Marina, consequently it is early morning before the show is over for the volunteers involved with it. The "Syracuse Thriller" show on July 4. w’hich is about one-fifth the size of the Wawasee show, takes two to three hours to set up. The Syracuse Police Department, Fire Department and Civil Defense will be assisting this year in securing the area at Lakeside Park for the display. The two Big Bam Boom firework displays that will be a part of the 1989 Wawasee Flotilla promise to fill the air over Lake Wawasee (July 2) and Lakeside Park (July 4) with shows that will delight and entertain Lakeland area residents of all ages.
