Allen Metzler is director of Lakes Area Band

By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer Being the center of attention is something Allen Metzler finds very rewarding. Now operating his own real estate appraisal business in Millersburg, Allen has been asked by the Lakes Area Symphonic Band to bring his 15 years of directing experience to Syracuse. The Lakes Area Symphonic Band will be making its debut on June 29 at Lakeside Park. The Elkhart Municipal Band will be performing the concert, with the Lakes Area Band joining in for two numbers. Allen says the music will consist of easy listening tunes, light overtures and marches. Admission is free and music is scheduled to begin promptly at Bp.m. A native of Wakarusa, now residing in Millersburg, Allen graduated from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree in music. He received his masters in the same from Indiana State University and started directing at Jefferson High School north of Goshen. After three years. Allen went to Fairfield Jr.-Sr. High School w'here he directed the Ice cream social on June 29 Thursday, June 29, promises lots of fun and entertainment for everyone as the first band concert will be performed in the Syracuse Lakeside Park. Prior to the concert, the Syracuse Mothers Club will be hosting an ice cream social to promote the Friends of the Park and the musical entertainment which will be provided throughout the summer. In charge of organizing the ice cream social. Shelly Hart says the event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the park, two hours prior to the Elkhart Municipal Band concert. The Syracuse Mothers Club was formed in 1934 by Mrs. Noble Blocker. The club was organized specifically for new mothers to share their experiences and stories about their children. The club soon gathered more members than one house could occupy, causing the necessary split into four separate clubs. Today, the clubs are still active in the Syracuse area and are happy to be a part of the community activities.

was pleasantly surprised. There’s a lot of potential and good players.” Allen says that most of the band members were first or second chair players in their own high school bands, but he says the band is not limited to just those players. At last count, the band was averaging about 45 people. Because most are in their 30s and beyond, “Our biggest problem is getting our lips back in shape.”

he laughs. “Our lips aren’t 18 anymore.” Allen says there are a few high scliool graduates who have joined. With the help of an assistant director, Bob Trame of Cromwell, Allen plans to join in the instrumental once in a while. Among his musical talents are his abilities to play woodwinds and brass instruments.
