modore," says Joe Hughes, the 1989 commodore for the Wawasee Flotilla. “There are a lot of other people out there." he adds humbly.

The flotilla committee announced its choice after its meeting on Wednesday evening. May 17. “If there was ever anything that needed to be done. Joe was there.” is the type of description many flotilla committee members used to illustrate this “humble" man with a very "pleasing smile," according to Diane Stell, co-chairwoman for publicity for the flotilla. Many described Hughes as one who "would give you the shirt off of his back" if it would help in some way. The above reasons coupled with Hughes' involvement in various community services, guided the flotilla committee toward its selection. If you were to ask Joe, or his wife Ethel, why he was selected to head the flotilla, their response would not come as easily as those remarks from members of the flotilla committee. “I don’t know," says Joe as he insists that there were “better" candidates for the commodore’s position. "The people who chose him know why they did," says Ethel. And their choice has both "surprised, and humbled" both Joe and Ethel. Married for 40 years, Joe and Ethel are the parents of three

children. Peggy Schuldt, Culver; Brenda Daugherty. Syracuse; and Kirk Hughes. Indianapolis. They also have eight grandchildren. Born and raised in Syracuse. Joe has involved himself in many community activities. He was a volunteer fireman for 38 years and was voted Fireman of the Year in 1966 for Kosciusko Coun-' ty for saving the life of a girl involved in a boating accident on Lake W’awasee. As a member of the fire department, Joe served in every capacity possible — fire chief, first assistant, second assistant, and secretarytreasurer. "You can't really like being a fireman." Joe once said when asked what he liked about being a fireman. He added, “I’d say helping people in dyer need that's what you are there for. When I joined, we only had two trucks and a 1938 Buick for a first aid wagon.”

THE COMMODORE — Shown are Ethel and Joe Hughes, Syracuse. Joe was selected to be the commodore for the 1989 Flotilla because of his service and dedication to the community. Both were surprised and humbled by the flotilla committee s selection, as Joe replied. "There are other people out there" who could have been nominated. (Photoby Mary Jane Lorton)

Besides his work with the fire department. Joe was voted to be an original first aid member, this coming before the introduction of the EMS. A charter member of the Jaycees. Joe also served on the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals for several yeas. Both he and Ethel were on the Adult Youth Board for three years. Joe is also a member of the Eagle's Lodge. There are other "little” things that Joe has done over the years that caught the attention of the flotilla committee. He has always helped hang the Christmas ornaments in Syracuse, for example. All of these activities, no matter how “little" or “big.” remain just “things that have to be done.” according to Joe. "We've done our share,” Joe admits, "but we don't do it for that (recognition)."
