| I | Syracuse extends | hospitality to 20, OOO+ £ Already a Syracuse tradition and becoming a regular stop for tourists :j: throughout the state and beyond, the Wawasee Flotilla enters its 27th year in g g 1989, having taken place since 1961, with the exception of 1972 and 1973. g Regularly held the Fourth of July weekend, the annual event coincides with £ g: the first summer visit to Lake Wawasee for several vacationers. Between 20,000 g g and 30,000 people come to Indiana’s largest natural lake for the holiday weekend g g and the flotilla offers those visitors an opportunity to take part in numerous g g events. g Whether one is an eight-year-old going on his first fishing trip or a 79-year- g g old grandmother, the flotilla has something for everyone. g g Syracuse is transformed into a large city during the events, although it g g manages to keep its small-town atmosphere and friendly demeanor. g g The festive weekend begins with a road race on Saturday, July 1 — a race g g that is becoming one of the best attended in the state — and ends with a fireworks g g display at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 4. Activities for everyone are placed in- g g between, making for an appetizing sandwich. g g Syracuse merchants and town employees prepare to put their best foot for- g g ward in the weeks leading up to the weekend, with extra police patrols added for $ £ safety and a large variety of shopping assured for enjoyment. £ g However, the lake remains the center of attention, with a flotilla parade and g g one of the best firework displays in the state taking place at the center of In- g g diana’s best swimming and boating stop. g £ Several volunteers throughout Syracuse and the Lakeland area help assure g g that the 20,000+ visitors feel at home, with Hoosier Hospitality being a certain £ g part of each year’s events. g
