North Webster UM Church is ready to build church

"We have outgrown everything about our present, though beloved building." says a recent publication from the North Webster United Methodist Church, and "Anything we would do would be awkward, dangerous and expensive." After many hours of debating and deliberating, the North Webster Church Committee has decided to build a new church on a 10-acre site of land, on Epworth Road, east of SR 13. The land was donated to the church by Mr. and Mrs. Bart Culver and family The building committee of the

CHURCH CENTENNIAL — The Clunette United Methodist Church is 100 years old this year. As part of the celebration commemorating that event, church members and well wishers gathered on June 24 to witness the opening of the building's cornerstone. In this photo, numerous spectators are gathered as Rev. John Bell examines the stone's contents. While the stone itself was not removed, a small copper box was taken from it. The contents of that box included copies of the 1889 Methodist Year Book, the "Warsaw Journal Union" dated August 8. 1889: the North Indiana Annual Conference Methodist Episcopal Church, dated 1889 and the Quarterly Methodist Discipline. Although the papers were moist and deteriorated, all Methodist

church has selected and recommended Rudy Moore of Fortville, a minister of the Nazarene Church, to build the facility. According to this same church publication. Moore "chose for his sole ministry to build churches within budgets that are viable." This church will be the last one that he will build before he retires and he is said to be very enthusiastic about the project. The price tag is estimated at $1,069,082 and is the "largest financial endeavor" undertaken by the North Webster church. The church was started in a

small log school house in 1840 In 1862 a frame church building was erected, and “with much modification through the years this site became the church as we know it today." Although the building committee stresses that they are grateful for this church, they are ready for expansion. New plans include a family (multi-purpose) center which will be large enough to accommodate the entire congregation for dinners and programs. It will feature a raised platform and a large storage closet for tables, chairs, etc.

A ground level church, the new building will afford everyone the opportunity to come to the church. Right now, according to church officials there are at least 20 elderly people who can not come to the church because of the stairs. They are also planning to have a modern kitchen “designed for convenience." It will also have easy access to the outside to make delivering food and other items more convenient. The sanctuary itself, which has a hexagonal shape, will be able to seat 350 people and will have a

modem sound system. The building committee is working with the town board of North Webster to insure that proper sewage and roads are established. The site itself has already been surveyed and will be tested for depth, strength and soil types. With these tests, the building committee will be able to make sure that conditions exist that will allow for the best water and water drainage possible. At present, the building committee is trying to raise funds for this million dollar project. Since they have to have half of the money "in hand" before they begin, they are hard at work trying to encourage classes, clubs, organizations, families or individuals to establish memorials or tributes by subscribing specific units in the new structure The building committee is hoping to break ground sometime this fall. Once started, the project should take about six months to complete.
