Douglas, Cox win in 5,000-meter run

By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer Jason Douglas and Nanette Cox emerged as winners in the Palace of Sports 5,000-meter run in North Webster Saturday. Douglas, an incoming senior at Wawasee High School, was the men’s overall winner with a time of 17 minutes, 41 seconds. Cox recorded a time of 26:08 to take first place among the women. Gary Robertson finished 15 seconds behind glas, with a time of 17:56. Cu< o Reed rounded out the top three, recording a time of 18:45. Lynette Zolman took second in the women’s division with a time of 28:17. Her time was good enough for first place in the 20-29 year-old age group. Cox was first in the 40-49 category and 12-year-old Valerie Vester was at the top of the 11-14 age division. In men’s age group breakdowns, David Shipley was first in the 11-14 year old division, Douglas was tops in the 15-19 category and Robertson took first among 20-29 year olds. Jim Huffer won in the 30-39 category, Mike Creighton took first in the 40-49 division and Dick Katte finished as the top runner for the 50-and-over group.

Action got underway in the Mermaid Festival basketball tournament in North Webster Monday evening as Gordy's Sub Pub defeated Manchester College 88-81. Marty Lehman paced the winners with 29 points while Ron Brandenburg (18), Mike Bradford (12), Mark Sumpter (111 and Troy Furnival (10) each reached double figures for the victors. The 1988-89 edition of the Wawasee boys’ swimming team, which concluded its season with a 13th place finish at the state finals, was recently ranked 13th nationally according to a poll released by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America (NISCA) The rankings, based on a team's dual meet performances, placed the Warriors in 13th place in Class II (high schools with enrollments of 900-1,400 students).
