10 YEARS AGO, JUNE 20,1979 Jack DeHaven, well known Fort Wayne automobile dealer, has been selected as commodore for the July 1 Flotilla Parade. A summer resident of Lake Wawasee, DeHaven has been very active in the Wawasee Property Owners Association. He was directly responsible for developing the pier numbering system on Lake Wawasee. Syracuse police officer Jack Zimmerman enjoys tennis and is good at it. It would seem he and Bob Baugher of Enchanted Hills teamed up recently to place second in a tourney at the Goshen Tennis Shop. The Wawasee Boating Association is a club of families owning or renting cottages on Lake Wawasee This year they are sponsoring races each Sunday morning, open to all sailors at no cost. Mindy Gilliland, 21, Syracuse, has been awarded the Amoco Bronze Medallion of Excellence for her participation in the national American College Theatre Festival recently held at the John F Kennedy Center in Washington. The installation of officers was held, with Mrs. Frank Bates leading the new officers in their installation vows. Mrs. Helen Overstreet, Syracuse, spent the week end at Marion and Indianapolis. 30 YEARS AGO, JUNE 18, 1959 Blanche Bates, forrper owner of the Dixie Restaurant, is managing Q’s Waco this summer. She said activity started at the Wawasee Lake front drive-in almost before it was opened, which was Saturday. The Wawasee Belle, paddle wheel excursion boat, adds to the interest as it plys the waves on Wawasee in its roundabout trips docking at Waco and Oakwood. An adventure which began for teenager Dick Jamison almost 2 years ago was climaxed on Sunday, June 14, when Dick, son of Syracuse Lake residents Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jamison, pulled a 21 foot Indian dug-out canoe from its swampy grave near the entrance of the Syracuse-Wawasee channel and brought it across Syracuse Lake to rest on the Jamison's beach. Miss Vivian Fisher, home from her first year at Indiana University, is employed for the summer at Syracuse Enterprises. She plans to enter training for airlines hostesses with one of the major airlines in the fall. Mr. and Mrs. Don M. Stevenson and daughters. Donna and Diane, arrived recently from Coral Gables, Fla., to spend the summer at their Lake Wawasee home.. Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Hundreds attended the annual fish festival held last Thursday night, in honor of the opening of the fishing season, which is always one of Syracuse’s most gala event.,, being sponsored by the local conservation clubs.
