Relatively Speaking — Ellis Island research

I By DORIS McMANIS CAMDEN In my May 22, 1985, column, I asked if anyone knew of an address of where to write for Ellis Island information. At that time, restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were beginning. The latter was used by our government as an immigration station from January 1. 1892, until it was closed in 1954. Over 20,000,000 aliens were examined there. Most immigrants are now cleared for entry before they come to this country. For a tiny sum. I have received a 32-page book by Loretto Dennis Szucs. lt is entitled Ellis Island: Gateway to America. There are personal accounts of how and why our millions of forebears — their joyful anticipation mingled with the. dread of being rejected at liberty's gate -v left everything familiar to come to this land of promise and uncertainty. Complete with a list of suggested reading and illustrations, the book also provides an introduction to researching Ellis Island ancestors.. For further information, write to Ancestry. Inc., Dept. RV, P.O. Box 476, Salt Lake City, Utah 84110. 419. Seek ancestors and descendants of Henry B, HESS, son of John HESS and Hannah ROWAND (CLEMENS), born 13 September, 1856, Kosciusko Co. Henry married first Mary Elizabeth MELLINGER, daughter of George B. MELLINGER and Mary Elizabeth BROWER He had a daughter. Grace Eliz HESS who married Charles O. BIRD, from the first

KIWANIS HEARS FROM SOUNDS OF HOPE DIRECTOR — Varner Chance, North Webster, of Sounds of Hope fame, presented the program Saturday morning, June 3, for the Wawasee Kiwanis ( lub, Syracuse. A videotape presentation showed the Sounds of Hope choir as they appear on tour in Europe. Chance has brought together IX Sounds of Hope groups through the years to sing in Scandinavian countries. West Germany, France, England, Switzerland, etc. They have also sung behind the Iron Curtain. Each year they travel to these countries to present a musical program for the purpose of promoting good w ill and understanding. Chance explained that arrangements are made well in advance of the trip for the choir members to stay in homes of various volunteers from the host countries. They try to match people of like occupations and interests as much as possible. In this way. the group gets to see more than a regular tourist group, and are able to gain a better understanding of the countries and people. They get more invitations than they are able to accept. There will be 53 members in the group going on tour this summer. Chance taught music for 42 years, the last 20 at college level. For the past 35 years. <• las worked with youth groups at Epworth Forest Choir School. He and his Sounds of Hope groups are well qualified “ambassadors of good w ill." Pictured are Varner Chance, and Ken Bow ton. program chairman for the day.
