Boys' track team takes fourth at Plymouth sectional

I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer Tim Edwards and Garrett Ponciroli recorded second-place finishes" as the Wawasee Warriors took fourth in a field of 20 teams at the Plymouth Track and Field Sectional last ThursdayEdwards and Ponciroli will join teammates Scott Rozow and Andy Eberly in regional competition in Kokomo tomorrow i Thursday). Plymouth emerged with the sectional championship, beating out second-place Manchester by an 88-84 margin. In a showdown between Northern Lakes Conference rivals, the Warsaw Tigers outscored Wawasee. 60-40. en route to grabbing third place. Warriors' coach Jerry Minton said his team led Warsaw for part of the meet before being passed in the final few running events. He added that the Warriors performed up to his expectations “The last three events is where they (Warsaw went around us." Minton said. “We qualified everyone I thought we would.'' Edwards narrowly lost out to Ted Hendry of Northfield for the high jump championship The two prep leapers had a jump-off before Hendry won with a jump of six feet, five inches. Edwards claimed second with a leap of 6-4. Ponciroli had the best performance of his high school career in the discus, taking second place with a personal best toss of 151-1 Rozow also recorded a personal

record as he took third in the pole vault, clearing 13-3. Eberly qualified for regional play in two events. He took third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.8 and 23.2 seconds, respectively. The Warriors' 400-meter relayteam of Eberly, Mike Foy, John Karesh and Robb Rhodes missed out on qualifying for the regional by two-tenths of a second. With the top four entries qualifying from each event, the Warriors had the speed to advance to Kokomo but didn't have the technique. “We actually ran faster than the teams ahead of us but we had two bad hand-offs," Minton said. Those who did qualify for the regional have an opportunity to earn a trip to a destination further south on SR 31. There's no semi-state level for track and field so a good regional performance could earn Wawasee's tracksters a trip to Indianapolis for state competition. Minton says Edwards has a good chance of making it if he "jumps decent " and that Ponciroli should advance if he can throw in the 150-feet range again. Rozow will need to continue setting personal records and Eberly will have to rise to the occasion against some tough competition in the sprints. "It would be nice to get some people through to state because that's quite an accomplishment." Minton said. Ply mouth Sectional Ist-Ply mouth, 88: 2nd-
