theatrical entertainment. Management was apprehensive when the play opened, for fear the production would be offensive to the Amish population who have made their home in Northern Indiana. But, that’s not the case, says Sonya Harman, head of group sales for Amish Acres. Many of the Mennonite church members who attended the production were delighted by the musical and found it to be very humorous. Harman said that when the production was first originated on Broadway in 1955, the cast consisted of 155 people. The first production at Amish Acres was performed — with many parts deleted — with just four cast members. The second year, the cast grew to eight, and this year, the cast has once again expanded to 10 permanent, professional actors and actresses.
Although the same musical, this year’? production of “Plain & Fancy” will not be the same as the other two performances. Harman says that each year, as the cast grows, so too does the characters, dance steps and even some of the songs, to keep the performance alive and interesting to returning patrons.
