Summer survival

(Continued from page 24) Sunburns are not only acquired on sunny days but cloudy days as well. Insect Attack It would not be summer without insects, especially bees and wasps. However, for some, stings from these insects can mean life or death. For those persons, medical attention is needed. Normal reactions to stings are redness and swelling in the immediate area of the sting. Alergic reactions will cause a rash on the body as well as breathing problems. Swelling in other areas of the body will also occur in this situation. Mrs. Mitchell noted it is very important to seek medical attention as anaphilantic shock may occur, this is an alergic reaction that shuts off a person’s airway if the sting is around the face or neck. “In these cases we use dual response,” she stated. This is when the local EMS calls paramedics,

allowing the person to receive medication and have'an open airway, instead of waiting until reaching the hospital. Burns from hot coals in grills or bond fires also occur. For these cold water, a cold compress, or ice wrapped in a towel is best. Mrs. Mitchell also encouraged people not to use pop bottles to store gasoline or kerosene. “Young children recognize the bottles as pop and drink the liquid. “ She also noted a person should not start a lawn mower in an enclosed area, like a garage, but outside or where there is plenty of ventilation. Area residents are encouraged to not be afraid to call the local EMS when something happens. However, in the case of fish hooks embedded in various areas of the body, a trip to a hospital emergency room is needed, the EMS cannot assist.
