Loree Mench plays to honor our soldiers
tßy KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer This Memorial Day. despite having to use crutches to get around, Loree Mench will play ’ Taps" at the Syracuse services planned to honor those who have died for this country. A bugler since she was eight and now a wife, and mother to two boys, Loree says she has always been patriotic and enjoys her chances to play. About a half-dozen times each year. Loree is called upori to play her bugle, perhaps to honor a veteran who has died or for a flag burning ceremony, during which she will play ‘ To the Colors. " Her bugling ability has even led her to play for Congressman John Hiler. She got the chance when her employer. Kreuter Manufacturing, got a flag that had flown over the Capitol building in Washington. Profile Loree. who is currently staying home to recover from knee surgery, recently spoke about her musical career. It began, she says, because her father was in charge of the Drum and Bugle Corps (affiliated with the local American Legion. Post 223) One of seven children. Loree. who has a twin sister named Laura, says as soon as each of the children turned eight years of age. he or she became part of the corps. “We did a lot of traveling when we were kids." as a result of their

Summer Reading begins June 5
By BONNIE BJELLA Syracuse Public Library Children's Librarian The Summer Reading Club at the Syracuse Public Library will begin June 5. Children may begin registering anytime after June 1 The theme this year is "World Traveler." Many new books have been added to the shelves for the reading pleasure of the children. Among them are: "Melody’s Kooky Cover-up." by Ken Gire —a story about building self worth "Pizza for Everyone." by Josh and Dottie McDowell —a story
participation in the corps, says Loree. The activity kept the large brood together and Loree says the family is still close. Despite all of that family involvement with the corps, Loree says, “I’m the only one who still plays (the bugle).” When called to play, Loree usually begins to practice sometime before the scheduled event. This year, she will play for both the Navy veterans and other veterans. Playing for them is something she believes in. “I feel it’s important, our veterans deserve it,” says Loree. She adds that having served their time for their country, they have a right to have “Taps" played forthem. Loree is glad to do it. Although playing the bugle is something she greatly enjoys, Loree does have other interests. In fact, she says her sons are her hobby. Keeping up with their many sports activities takes plenty of time. In addition, Loree belongs to Grace Lutheran Church in Syracuse and, not surprisingly, is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. W'hen looking at Loree. it’s hard not to notice one standout quality: her hair. It’s longer than most women wear it these days and it’s heavy and wavy. Loree’s hair used to be even longer, but she had to cut it because it gave her headaches; otherwise she would have kept the length. She keeps her hair so long, despite the currently popular hair trends, because, "I’ve just always thought worrl&qshpuld have long hair” She adds that both of her grandmothers had longhair. As a result, on this Memorial Day, Loree, complete with her long hair, bugle and crutches, should be easy to find during the community’s services. She's been playing for the local Memorial Day observances for many, many years and plans to continue, she says, "As long as I am able.”

Video Review
In the past several years there has been an explosion of video stores, making hundreds of movies available to every family. Many times the consumer has no idea what sort of movie he or she is taking home. It can be a traumatic shock to youngsters who discover, too late, a scene of graphic violence in the middle of their kiddy show. An unexpected vivid sexual scene can be very embarrassing in the middle of a gathering of friends. As the mother of three teenagers, Mrs. Kline is presenting a moderate view on a number of films which are available in area stores.
DIE HARD is one of the greatest action films of the year. A team of trained commandoes plan their hi-tech crime down to the second, matching their skills against an intricate computer controlled security system. Everything goes off without complication, except their plan didn't allow for the interference of Bruce Willis, an off duty cop visiting his estranged wife. There are many memorable characters in this film; the savvy street cop. the police chief who goes strictly by the rules, the FBI agents who are unknowing partners in the crime. The theme of this movie naturally calls for a lot of shooting and violence. For the older audience it isn't overdone in the extreme.
The head of the Mafia family is under indictment and wants no more trouble, but trouble is what they get. Tom Beringer portrays an anguished priest called to deliver the Last Rites to a dying man. He has no idea that man is his brother-in-law, or that the cold blooded killer is his sister In the sanctity of confessional the priest speaks to the mysterious woman with his brother-in-law at the time of death. Duty to the church says he must shelter this woman, even from Ms own family The lovely witness is the ultimate test of faith for the priest and his faith. This movie is a good cliff hanger, but one should be cautious of very explicit sexual scenes.

This combination with a white skirt and black top is eye-catching.
