Heat Beat — What's your allergy potential
It is a myth that people who have allergies know it and take care to avoid allergy triggers such as grass, pollen and dust. In fact, most people do not know the cause of their allergies. Many are not even aware that they have allergies. “A lot of people come into my office as a last resort; they think they have perpetual cold symptoms or are simply prone to headaches,” says Dr. John Connell, M.D., Director of The Nasal Diseases Study Center, Englewood, New Jersey. “With the proper diagnosis and treatment, we can eliminate the discomfort that these people have accepted as something they just must live with. ” Answer the following questions to test your potential for allergies: 1) Do cold-like symptoms persist for more than two weeks, or happen at unlikely times, such as on a trip? 2) Do you get colds year-round, and more often than other people? 3) Do you have frequent eye irritation (such as itching, burning and tearing) without a direct cause? 4) Do symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing appear quickly after you change your surroundings (room, car, inside/outside)? 5) Do you experience frequent, unexplained headaches in certain situations or places? 6) Is nasal discharge clear and think, rather than yellow and cloudy? 7) Does frequent, staccato sneezing not seem to help anything? 81 Do you experience frequent or recurrent shiny discoloration around the eyes? It you answer “yes” to four or more of the questions above, it is quite possible that you have an allergy. If you do suffer from allergies, you may not want to rely on self-medication and over-the-counter drugs to do the trick — some can cause drowsiness, irritability and rebound congestion.
A doctor or allergy specialist can prescribe the appropriate medications for your symptoms to help allergic reactions. Medication is even available to prevent allergic reactions. For more information on allergies and for free brochures, call the Allergy Information Center and Hotline, toll-free, at (800) 727-5400. Are you trying to lose weight? You probably made a New Year’s resolution this year to lose weight — remember? And you probably put it off until you realized that bathing suit season was just a few short weeks away. If that’s the case, then don’t decide that you're going to lose 20 pounds in two weeks — you’ll end up weak, irritable and, quite possibly, sick. Crash dieting is never a good idea, unless you’re seriously obese and under a doctor's supervision. Crash dieting slows your metabolism (you burn fewer calories) and puts you at risk for severe nutritional deficiencies. It’s far healthier to adopt a sensible eating plan that you can follow for life, than to get into a vicious cycle of dieting and then regaining the weight you lost. Exercise will burn calories and speed, your metabolism, and you can do it with friends or family. So, work on toning up your muscles instead of starving yourself. If you’re still worried about how you'll look in a bathing suit, shop around to find one that’s flattering. Most women’s magazines and fashion magazines offer advice on the kinds of suits most flattering for each body type. And remember, black makes yoy look smaller, and horizontal stripes make you look wider!
