Baseball squad drops five games, now 3-14 on season

| By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer The Wawasee Warriors varsity baseball team dropped its fifth game in a row on Monday night, a 3-2 loss in nine innings at Plymouth, to fall to 3-14 (1-8 in the NLC) on the season. "We played better than we have lately but we’re still not hitting the ball and that’s hurting us,” stated head coach Neal Frantz after seeing his team collect just three hits in Monday's defeat. The visiting Warriors took a 2-0 lead on Plymouth in the first inning as they scored on an error and on a sacrifice fly. Wawasee, which had the bases loaded in the inning with no outs, saw its rally stopped as the sacrifice fly that made it 2-0 was turned into an inning ending double play as a runner was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play. After Plymouth tied the contest with one run in the fourth and another in the fifth, the game ended in the bottom of the ninth as Plymouth's Lance Weidner smacked a game-winning doable to give the Pilgrims the 3-2 win. Wawasee’s Kevin Manning went the entire way on the mound for the Warriors on Monday giv-

JV baseball team drops two one-run contests, now 8-3-1

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer I “We got a great pitching performance but we just didn’t hit the ball and our defense let them score on us,” stated Jerry Hawkins, Wawasee junior varsP ty baseball coach, after watching his team drop a 3-2 contest at Plymouth on Monday for their second straight one-run defeat. The Warriors, now 8-3-1 on the year, fell behind 3-0 by allowing unearned runs in the first, third and fourth innings during Monday’s contest Wawasee pitcher Jason Mickley gave up just one hit to the Pilgrims while striking out eight and allowing just one walk but the Warrior defense committed six errors to spell the 3-0 deficit and the eventual 3-2 loss. Wawasee rallied in the top of the seventh inning as Clay Brooks connected for a two-run single to cut the score to 3-2. The rally ended however as Brooks, attempting to go to second on his single, was thrown out on a controversial call to end the contest. “Mickley pitched great and I was happy that we battled back at the end but they threw a very good pitcher at us and we just weren’t able to get any offense going,” concluded Hawkins who saw his team collect just two hits on the night The Warriors will look to end their brief two-game losing streak with a 4:30 tilt at home today versus Warsaw before facing Tippecanoe Valley (also at 4:30) on the road tomorrow. The JV squad will host Goshen on Friday at 4:30 before taking on the Northridge Raiders on Monday in a 4:30 contest in Middlebury Loss To North Wood 6-5 “We played a good game for the most part and had a chance to win so 1 wasn’t disappointed with our performance." said Hawkins after seeing the JV squad go to 8.-2-1 on the year with a 6-5 loss at North Wood last Friday The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning before the Panthers scored three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead’after the first in what

ing up three runs on 10 hits while recording six strikeouts. “Kevin pitched a super game and Kermit (Kropf) did a fine job at catcher especially since that was only the second time that he had played there in a game,” commented Frantz. The Warriors three hits, two of which occurred in the first inning, were recorded by Manning, Chris Conkling and Erik Stevens. Wawasee will look to end its losing streak this afternoon with a 4:30 contest at home versus conference rival Warsaw. The Warriors will host Goshen on Friday (also at 4:30) before taking to the road for a game at Fort Wayne Northside on Saturday at 11 a.m. and a contest at Northridge next Monday at 4:30. Doubleheader Loss to'Concordia Wawasee saw its season mark dip to 3-13 as they dropped a pair of games (10-0 and 14-2) to powerful Fort Wayne Concordia on the road Saturday “They’re a very good team but we also played lousy and basically didn’t do anything right in the losses,” stated Frantz about the games, both stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule. The Warrior bats were as cold as the weather on Saturday as they recorded a total of six hits in the two contests while the host

would be a see-saw battle until the end. After North Wood took a 5-1 lead with a two-run third, the Warriors scored two of their own in the fourth to cut the advantage to 5-3 in favor of the hosts after four innings. Wawasee notched two runs in the top of the seventh to even the game at 5-5 before the host Panthers scored the gamewinner in the bottom of the seventh as a runner was safe at home on a throwing error. Mickley went the distance on the mound to take the loss despite pitching a good game, according to Hawkins. “North Wood is one of the better hitting teams that we’ve faced,” added Hawkins. The Warrior offense was paced by Brian Schwab and Matt Ringler who each collected two hits. Schwab and Ringler, along with Jerry Smith, Brent Zartman and Chad Henson, each collected one run-batted-in for the squad. Defeat Concord 16-13 The JV squad raised its season mark to 8-1-1 with a 16-13 slugfest win over visiting Concord last Wednesday. “Offensively we did just fine,” remarked Hawkins after seeing his team pound out 13 hits and score runs in every inning except the fourth. “Once we built a big lead (8-0), we kind of relaxed and let them battle back and make a game out of it and that kind of concerned me," added Hawkins after the win. After taking an 8-0 lead after three innings, Wawasee saw its advantage cut to 8-6 after the Minutemen scored three times in the fourth and fifth innings. The hosts put together a seven-run ex plosion in the fifth inning to make the score 15-6 and put the game out of reach even though a late rally by Concord made the game close once again. Mickley and Zartman led the team with three hits each while Schwab and Aaron Sincroft each chipped in with two Schwab led the squad with three runs-battfcd m while Mickley, Ab Edmonds and Tim Schwartz each drove in two runs.

Cadets were pounding out 11 hits in the first game and 12 more in the finale. Fred Crouch collected a pair of singles in the first game defeat while Tim Lilly and Stevens were the only Wawasee players to collect hits in the nightcap One silver lining for the Warriors on Saturday was the ability of Fred Cowan to reach base as he went 1-2 at the plate while also drawing three walks. Shutout By North Wood 8-0 “We didn’t play well and we’re into a pattern of falling behind early in the game and not being able to turn it around,” stated Frantz after the Warriors blanked 8-0 at North Wood last Friday. Wawasee fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and were put away for good in the second when North Wood’s Matt Hockert connected for a three-run homer to make the deficit 4-0. The Panthers added two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to insure the shutout. The Warriors were only able to connect for three hits versus North Wood as Adam Wilson, Conkling and Crouch each had a single. Loss To Concord 13-9 “We hit the ball as well as we have all season,” commented Frantz after seeing his squad drop a 13-9 offensive slugfest to Concord at home last Wednesday afternoon. The Minutemen jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead with four runs in the first and second innings and two more in the third. Wawasee scored twice in the third and three more times in the home half of the fifth to cut the lead to 11-5 before two Concord runs in the sixth made the score 13-5. The Warriors, who collected a total of 12 hits as did the Minutemen, put together one last rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull within striking distance. After scoring four times to cut the lead to 13-9, Wawasee loaded the bases before the Minutemen were able to get the final out of the contest. Crouch led the Warriors with three hits while Wilson and Manning each collected two. Crouch, along with Conkling, also led the squad as each tallied two runs-batted-in.
