County telephone equipment to be furnished by UTS
I Bl K ATE WOLFORD Stuff Writer Although quotes by two other telephone companies were opened. United Telephone Systems will be furnishing the equipment needed to . implement the new ABC phone system slated to be used by the county. County Auditor Pat Brown said it was felt that the UTS quote was the "best quote for what was included and what we would get The quote, which came in at a little over $24,000. included equipment. wiring, installation and maintenance; as did the two other quotes Those were submitted by General Telephone and Electronics 'GTE) and Indiana Bell They were opened during a May 9 meeting of the county commissioners Under the price quote system the commissioners used, they were not obligated to take the lowest bid Brown, however, said the UTS bid. "was a competitive quote." Two options came with each quote — an outright purchase or a lease over five year period with a St buy-out at the end of that time Brown said there was a "strong interest factor" with the lease and long term savings with the buying option

Maintenance will be built in during the first year after installation. Future maintenance will be negotiated , While the county council, which holds the county purse strings, will not need to approve the pur chase, they will have to approve a transfer of funds The high-tech ABC system is now being furnished by UTS in entirety It will replace the obsolete system being used by the county Among the many pro blems that have been linked to the old system is the fact that after 4 pm. Monday through Friday. after 6 p m on Fridays <in some areasi and on snow days and holidays, calls are routed through the sheriff's office Many departments, especially the court system, do not stop the working day at 4 p m The cur rent telephone inaccessibility after hours and other problems should be eliminated by the ABC system In another ma'ter. there was discussion on the lights which will be placed around the county courthouse today The county's cost for the lights thus far has been $5.6(X). far under the ceiling of SIS.(MX) for the county share Any additional costs are not ex pected to reach anywhere near the SIS.(XX) mark There has been extensive volunteer help on the project
