10 YEARS AGO. MAY 2. 1979 The Lakeland Day Care Center, located on the second floor of the Calvary United Methodist Church, SR 13, Syracuse, will be having an open house Wednesday. May 9, from 8 a m to 11:30 a m. and from 3-6 p.m. A pledge ritual was held prior to the beginning of the April 26 meeting of Beta Sigma Phi. The two new members of the chapter are Rosemarie Lange and Judith Wilson. The ceremony was con ducted by Vice President Penny Plikerd Mrs. Peter Blue, Mrs. Ralph Clingaman, Mrs. Philip Singer and Mrs. Carrington Yeager attended the Wednesday session of the 48th convention of garden clubs of Indiana, held in Merrillville last week. The women are members of the Wawasee Garden Club Paul Isbell, president of the Syracuse Alumni Association, and his fellow officers are busy planning for the coming banquet This year's event will take place in the ‘ Syracuse Junior High School on Saturday, May 26 The old Star Store will soon be used as a shoe clearance center warehouse for Pilcher Shoes The store is expected to open within the next couple of weeks on Satur days The Star Store was located at 108 E Main St., Syracuse. 20 YEARS AGO. Syracuse Police — Investigate accidents and thefts
Syracuse Police investigated seven accidents, one with minor injuries, four vandalisms or theft reports and an incident during the past week. Alex Kupczyski. 12, Syracuse, suffered second degree burns to his hands and knees after he and two other boys used gasoline to burn ant holes Kupczyski was burned when the gasoline caught fire from a lighted match He dropped a funnel, splashing gasoline on his knees and hands The fire was extinguished by the youth rolling on the ground. The incident occurred Sunday. April 30, at 7 p m He was taken to a doctor's office by his mother for treatment. Tammy Pauwels notified police Sunday, April 30. at 12:55 p.m., that someone had drove a vehicle into a newspaper machine at Red D Mart, SR 13, Syracuse, and left the scene. Damage, to the machine was estimated up to $250. Robert Patterson, Syracuse, notified police Thursday, April 27. after he found the windshield to his 1983 motorhome had been broken by a rock. The vandalism occurred sometime Wednesday. April 26 Damage was estimated at $l5O. A bicycle reported stolen was recovered almost four hours later Brenda Byrd. Syracuse, reported the theft of a 20-inch Huffy bicycle from a shed at her residence at 9:30 a m. Tuesday, April 25. The theft had occurred Monday, April 24. between 6:30-8:30p.m. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, the bicycle was recovered at a location on Main Street. Matt Dick. Syracuse, reported his 10-speed bicycle taken from a storage shed at Wawasee High Schoo) on Monday. April 24. The bicycle had been left in the shed since September 1988 and was last seen in March The bicycle is valued at SIOO $ 150.

Accidents Caitlin Senders, I'z, Syracuse, suffered a contusion/bruise to the head after the car she was riding in was hit by a hit and run driver in another vehicle. The accident was at 8:04 a m. Monday, May 1, at Brooklyn and Oak Streets She was not taken to a hospital. She was a passenger in a 1985 Renault Encore driven by Teri S. Senders. 26, Syracuse Senders was westbound on Brooklyn Street and could not avoid hitting another vehicle that failed to stop on Oak Street. The driver of the other vehicle stopped, got out of the vehicle and spoke briefly to Senders before leaving The other driver left without exchanging information for insurance purposes Damage was estimated up to $1 .(XX) to Sender's car. A 1976 Pontiac Trans Am, driven by Shawn M. Riley, 20, Goshen, backed into a 1984 Chevrolet SlO pickup truck operated by Glenn H Rosenquist, Leesburg The accident occurred at 6:02 a m Tuesday, May 2, in the parking lot at Red D Mart. SR 13, Syracuse. Riley stated he did not see the truck behind him due to the back window being fogged up. The Trans Am, registered to Charles F. Loyd 11. Swayzee, sustained up to S2OO damage. Brake failure caused a 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Ricky Arthur Stanton, 27, Syracuse, to hit a guide wire on a United Telephone System pole. The accident .was at 4:07 p m Thursday, April 27, on South Huntington Street, north of Baltimore Street. Stanton was able to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of him after the brakes failed.
