Warriors drop close games, stand at 2-8 on the season
(By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer “Close but no cigar." could be the appropriate way to sum up the fortunes of the Wawasee varsity baseball team during the past week of play. The squad, now 2-8 on the season, dropped five games by a total of 10 runs including a 5-4 loss at conference rival. Warsaw oh Monday. “We played a good game and I think that we've played well in our last four games, just not quite well enough to win." remarked head coach Neal Frantz after seeing his squad lose a heartbreaker to the Tigers. Wawasee jumped on the hosts early on Monday as starting pitcher Adam Wilson blasted a tworun home run in the second inning for a 2-0 Warrior lead. After Warsaw knotted the score at 2-2 with two unearned runs in the fourth inning, the Warrior offense responded in the fifth as Erik Stevens stroked a two-run double to give his squad a 4-2 advantage. The host Tigers responded with their own form of firepower in the bottom of the fifth as Jeff Fitzgerald connected for a two-run “tater” of his own to tie the game at 4-4. With the game still tied at 4-4 after six innings of play, the Warriors threatened in the seventh by getting a man to second with just one out before reliever Jeff Szymanski shut the door by getting Chris Conkling and Stevens out to end the inning. The bottom of the seventh saw quite an unusual finish as the game looked to be headed for extra innings after the Warriors got two outs with a Warsaw runner reaching second. After Wawasee intentionally walked Fitzgerald to put runners on first and second. relief pitcher Rod Coy (who entered the game in the sixth i struck out the next Tiger hitter but the ball was not held cleanly by the catcher and the runner reached first as the throw was bobbled during the attempted putout. With the bases loaded. Warsaw's Bill LaNoue stroked a game winning single to give the hosts the 5-4 win. “Even though we've lost seven in a row, I still feel good about the team and we just have to continue to build on the good things that we re doing and work to correct our mistakes I think that we'll continue to play well and hopefully things will start falling our waj in the win column soon." said Frantz.

The Warriors will look to end their seven-game losing skid this afternoon at Goshen before facing Northridge at home on Friday and traveling to Bremen for a game on Monday. All three of the NLC contests are scheduled to get underway at 4:30 p.m. Doubleheader Loss To Manchester The visiting Warriors saw their season mark dip to 2-7 as they dropped a pair of 5-4 decisions to the Manchester Squires on Saturday. In the opener, Wawasee jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the hosts battled back to eventually take the lead (and the victory) with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 5-4. Chris Conkling was saddled with the loss on the mound despite allowing just two earned runs in the contest. The Warrior offense recorded just five hits as Fred Crouch, Kevin Manning, Adam Wilson. Conkling and Kermit Kropf all recorded singles. Wilson collected two runs-batted-in while Crouch and Conkling .drove in the other two Warrior tallies. The Warriors came out strong once again versus Manchester in the second game grabbing a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two more in the second inning. The hosts responded with a four-run rally in the fifth to knot the score at 4-4 as Andrew Cornell tied the game by blasting a tworun homer. The contest remained tied until the 11th inning although Mancheste threatened with scoring opportunities in the 7th and 10th that were shut down by Chad Cotton, who relieved Wawasee starting pitcher Manning in the 7th. Manchester captured the victory in the bottom of the 11th as Cornell singled in the gamewinning run to give the Squires the sweep of the doubleheader. The Warriors collected nine hits (six in the first two innings) with Jay Koontz. Conkling and Erik Stevens each belting two. The Warrior's Geoff Coburn, a sophomore outfielder, sustained an ankle injury in the second contest during a stolen base attempt and will be lost for the season, according to Frantz, Setback To Plymouth "A- disappointing loss,” stated Frantz after the Warriors dropped a 4-1 game to Plymouth last

Friday at home. Wawasee grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Conkling and the contest remained that way until the visitors rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to take home the 4-1 win. After the Pilgrims tied the game at 1-1, pitcher Lance Weidner snapped the tie with a two-run homer to give the visitors the lead and himself the victory on the mound. Rod Coy,„ despite fanning 11 batters in six and two-thirds innings. took the pitching loss for the Warriors. “Rod gave us a real ’ good effort," commented Frantz. Beanballs and brawls
By HANK AARON Fights have never become as mych a problem in baseball as they are in other sports, and that's a good thing. I've seen players get seriously hurt, their careers endangered by injuries suffered in on-the-field fights. When I was playing, I felt like my job was to play baseball, not to fight. But when our bench emptied out onto the field during a brawl, I went too. That’s part of being a team player. Instead of looking for someone to punch, however, I always went out there with the idea of being a peacemaker: Some players are more likely than others to get in fights. Billy Martin had that reputation when he played for the Yankees, long before becoming a manager. On the Braves teams of the 'sos, we had a great little guy named Johnny Logan: Johnny was a pep perpot shortstop who thought people picked on him. He was a guy who wouldn't take much

from an opponent, and he'd fight anyone. After one of his fights, we'd all get hot and go on a winning streak. These days the majority of fights begin as a result of a pitcher throwing 4 at a hitter. Most players understand that such things as hard slides into second base to break up a double play are just part of the game. But when a pitcher intentionally throws at a hitter, that brings up some anger. t\ pitcher can brush a player back or even knock him down without throwing at his head. Now it s one thing to be hit by a wild thrower, but there was a time when I was hit in the head by two pitchers who I thought had excellent control. Elroy Face of the Pirates hit me and the next .day his teammate Vernon Law got me. There was another time when 1 was hit by Stan Williams, a big guy who threw very hard. There are ways to get back at a pitcher who is throwing at you. I've known players who would bunt the ball down the first base line. The first baseman charges towards home to field the ball and the pitcher has to run over to first to take the throw. The batter and the pitcher converge on first base and elbows, shoulders or spikes are used to repay wayward pit ches. That's not a very good way to get even. What if you bunt the ball right back to the pitcher'.’ All you are then is an easy out 1 found that the only way I could get back personally at the pitcher was to hit the-next pitch out of the park or at least make sure I got a base hit. That tells the pitcher that throwing at you is not going to solve his problem
