Linda Benning to study in Russia
I By KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer At a mere 16 years of age, Linda "Muffin” Benning of Milford, is realizing two long-standing dreams: to study marine biology and to visit Russia. She’ll even get to do them at the same time. Profile Linda, who is a dedicated student at Wawasee High School, learned of her good fortune last month, when she received a letter telling her she had been chosen to participate in the People to People Youth Science Exchange (part of the High School Student Ambassador Program). She had not applied for the program. Her reaction? "Shock.” she says, laughing. “It fit in with my far. far away goals. ” The program will allow her to be a part of a marine biology expedition taking place in the Black Sea That won t be the only place she visits, however. Her itinerary for the 21 day (she leave the U.S. at the end of June) program includes Helsinki, Einland; Moscow and Leningrad. Why Linda's fascination with Russia? Why not the more romantic France or Italy? She replies, "It’s something I’ve always wanted to do It has been forever.” Linda looks forward to the opportunity to work closely with Soviet people and hopes to live with a Soviet family In fact, she says what she most hopes to get out of the trip is, “The experience of a different culture.”
LOUISA'S LETTER Dear Louisa. We live in the country and have two children — both of whom ar married and have homes and children of their own They live in the city and love to come out to visit us My problem is this we love to have the children come but my husband and 1 have lived very simply since the children left and we have enough to live comfortably on but 1 cannot afford help as it is so expensive these days The children never let us know when they are coming and it is sometimes quite a problem to get up a meal for six people on the spur of the moment And then

they never stay- long enough to help clean up What can I do'.’ If I say anything it may make for hard feelings and keep them from coming which I would hate What would you do under these cir cumstances’’ Grandmom Ala Answer Children have-a way for taking their parents for granted and it has probably never occurred to them that they should call before they come for a meal and offer to help afterwards Why not tell them that you would appreciate their calling you when they plan a visit so you can prepare things ahead of time In this way you would have more time toenjoy their visit After the meal suggest that all of them give you a hand with the dishes, as many hands make light work \ou may not have as many -visits after that but I am sure they will be more enjoyable ones Louisa

She’ll get that, of course, behind the Iron Curtain, which has recently been inching open courtesy of glastnost. According to Youth Science Exchange information, 1989 is the year for a pilot program. Linda observes, “Letting us in on all of their sciences and stuff has to be pretty wild for them.” Letting her go to Russia must be “pretty wild” for Linda’s parents, Dave and Pat Benning. Linda (who says, "I have a great family, they’re really neat.”), admits that Mom and Dad are understandably nervous, but says, “They’re very supportive.” They need to be. The trip to Russia carries a price tag of $3,500. She reports that her family is trying to raise money for the trip and Linda, hefself, is appealing to local service groups as well. In addition to planning for her trip to Russia, Linda keeps busy as an National Honor Society student, playing bass in the school orchestra, jazz band and chamber orchestra and dancing ballet. She even plays electric bass in the pep band. Linda has studied ballet for 10 years and loves it. In fact, she is a senior member of the Northern Indiana CoArts Production. She is also an active participant in her church, Christian Church of Milford. She enjoys spending time with her family as well. Linda has a brother, Mike, and a sister, Karen. She even finds time to date a “patient guy.” So, how and why does Linda do it all? “I just like to try new things,” she says. “I love to be challenged,” she adds. Linda has plans to go to college, but for now, her trip to Russia seems to be the center of her attention. She’s clearly excited at the prospect. “It just fits me so perfectly,” Linda says. “It’s Russia and it’s marine biology.”
