Track team wins showdown against Goshen
I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The Wawasee Warriors track team won one showdown, had another postponed and started a new tradition in the past week. It all started on Thursday when Wawasee’s tracksters established themselves as one of the Northern Lakes Conference’s top teams with a 73-54 victory over the Goshen Redskins. “We were kind of fired up Thursday night,” coach Jerry Minton said. “They wanted towin that one.” The Warriors took first in 10 of 15 events enroute to the victory. Garrett Ponciroli led the way in the throwing events, taking first in the shot put (44 feet, 7 inches) and the discus (133 feet). Mike
JV squad 2-1 despite loss to Elkhart Central nine

The Warriors, 2-1 on the season, picked up a total of just four hits in Saturday's contest that was halted after five innings due to the 10 run rule. JerrySmith continued his early season success at the plate for the squad as he collected half of the squad's hit total by belting a double as well as a single. Pitcher Brent Zartman and Ab Edmonds collected the other two hits for the Warriors. Win Over Columbia City The junior varsity squad battled from behind at home last Friday to come away with a 10-9 victory over East Noble to go to 2-0 on the season. "We started out slow against East Noble (down 6-0 after two and a half innings) but we were able to stay close and then when we realized that we had the chance to win the kids went ahead and took the game from

Two days later, the Warriors headed to Fort Wayne where they finished eighth out of 12 teams in their initiation to the Northside Relays. them,” commented Hawkins. The Warriors, trailing 6-0, got back into the contest with three runs in the third to make it 6-3. The visitors answered with two runs to make it 8-3 before the 1 hosts scored seven runs in the - last three innings to grab a 10-8 advantage. “We got some hits (eight total) and were able to reach base on some errors and then once we took the lead Jason (Mickley) came in and shut them down with four strikeouts in the last inning," stated Hawkins. The offensive catalysts for the JV squad last Friday were Smith, who collected a single and a double, and Matt Ringler and Mickley who each drove in two runs. The Warriors were scheduled to play at Concord on Monday but the game was rained out on both Monday and yesterday and will not be made up since the school's are scheduled to face each other later in the season. greener pastures and tougher competition of Northside. “It’s the kind of meet that will bring out good individual performances." Minton said. “It's not the kind of meet we’ll win.” Scott Rozow and Tim Edwards recorded Wawasee’s best individual performances, taking seconds in the pole vault and high jump respectively. Cuong Reed. Jeff Carey, Steve Eastman and Jason Douglas teamed to give the Warriors fourth in the 3.200-meter relay. Yesterday's (Tuesday) tri-, meet with Concord and Northridge was postponed because of bad weather. The meet was rescheduled for today at Concord. Minton says the contest is going to be an important one because Concord and Wawasee, along with Plymouth, are probably the top teams in the league. “They're going to be very tough to beat,” Minton said about Concord’s squad. “We're going to have to have super, super performances. They're probably the best team in the conference." The Warriors will round out the next week's action with three meets on the road. After locking horns with Columbia City on Thursday, they will head to Goshen for the Goshen Relays. That meet will be followed with a tri-meet against Bremen and Plymouth on Tuesday. April 25.
