Ted Rogers is a lover of electronics
tBy KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer Edwin "Ted" Rogers of Syracuse has been a lover of electronics since he was a kid. Luckily for him, during his life, Rogers has seen the world of electronics explode with near constant changes in the technology. Profile Rogers became interested in radio during his early teens. He put together a one tube short-wave radio at age 14. “The first station I got was Rome. Raly, which was quite a thrill in those days," he remembers. "I’ve been involved with electronics ever since then. " Born on a farm near Bridgeville. Rogers was one of millions raised during the Depression. While the family had plenty to eat because they farmed, they were poor, but then again, so was everyone else. Although he graduated high school in a class of 17. Rogers says, “I got as much math and science as I could in that small school.” While Rogers was attending college in Fort Wayne and working towards an electrical engineering degree in radio. World War II came around and he enlisted Eventually, while in the Army, he earned a degree in electrical engineering, received a commission and was stationed in Italy. When Rogers came home from the war. he had a wife and two kids in Huntington. $250 from the Army and a 1940 Nash. He didn't mind so much. Those who grew up in the Depression, he says, were, "used to pulling themselves up by the bootstraps." So. he began a radio repair shop that eventually grew into the circuit board manufacturing business that he and his wife Majorie own and operate today out of their Syracuse home. The company is Rogers Electro-Matics. The actual circuit board manufacturing end of the business began

Certain presses were needed as part of the manufacturing process and ultimately, control systems were needed in order to produce the presses. «. Rogers is a firm believer in a strong defense, so it's no surprise that when a Huntington National Guard was formed and Rogers played a key role in the formation. In fact, he eventually rose to the state headquarters level and became a lieutenant colonel. All told, counting WW 11, Rogers gave 26 years of military service to his country. The Rogers have been living in Syracuse since 1971. Avid boaters and lovers of Lake Wawasee, they enjoy having their two teenage grandchildren come for extended summertime visits. Their daughter Carolyn is mother to those kids. As a member of the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce since he moved to Syracuse, Rogers became involved with the rebirth of the Wawasee Flotilla Parade in 1974. The Flotilla Parade began in 1961 and in 1970, the newly formed Jaycees had taken over sponsorship of the event. On New Year’s Eve of that year, a fire that destroyed Pickwick Block destroyed the Jaycees club room and all the Flotilla records with it. The Flotilla went on in 1971, but was dormant during the next two years. It was Rogers who rescued the Flotilla. At his first chamber meeting, he said he’d always enjoyed the event. As is usually the case in these types of situation, he was named chairman of the new Flotilla Committee. It's been going ever since, with Rogers always involved. Anyone can join the committee and Rogers says there are always about 25 to 30 interested people. Although different people join and then move on, he says there is always a core group that keeps at it. Rogers enjoys the Flotilla, calling it mostly “a fun thing.” He does appreciate the fact that it is the only organized event for the lake except the yearly fireworks. In the end though, it’s electronics that are his life’s work and his hobby. In fact, he even holds a patent on an electrical device. Just keeping up on new changes in his field keeps him busy, as does his business. Rogers doesn't plan on retiring and says he sticks with electronics because, “Hove it.”
