Seek to start lakes area band
| By STACEY LESCH z Staff Writer Ron Stoll moved to Syracuse just three years ago, leaving behind his chair in the brass instrument section of the Elkhart Municipal Band. But ever since, he has thought seriously about starting a band involving persons from all over the lakes areas. “I just want to play my trombone, again,” he says. Now, with the cooperation of the Syracuse Friends of the Park board, Ron’s hopes are becoming reality. Area residents have heard talk that the park board was trying to establish a band to bring music entertainment to Lakeside Park in Syracuse. Many thought Ron was put.in charge of establishing the band, but Ron says, “It’s purely coincidental that I was trying to gat a band together at the same time.” Now, Ron and the park board have joined forces and plans for the musical entertainment are underway.
According to Kip Schumm, president of the park department and member of the Syracuse Friends of the Park, a gazebo band stand now located in Lakeside Park, will be removed in order to provide a setting for a band shell which is hoped to be completed by mid to late summer. Talk of a band in the lakes area began seriously last summer after plans for the band stand were completed by Sam Leman, Syracuse architect. Kip estimates that construction of the shell will be in the mid-$20,000 range. Although Ron does not have any finalized plans for the lake area band, the Elkhart Municipal Band has offered to sell them 75 adult-size, uniforms for just $1,500. Rossi says he has heard from 20 people who say they are seriously committed to joining the lakes area band, but he is hoping to have at least 30 more. “With 75 uniforms, we obviously have growth capacity,” he says. Ron is especially pleased with all of the support the Elkhart band is offering him. Besides the uniforms, the band has agreed to
go through its library of music and give the lakes area band any duplicate copies it has. “It’s not uncommon to pay S9O for a tune, so we really appreciate that,” Ron says of the offer. Also, the Elkhart band has invited Ron and his band to perform with the Elkhart Municipal Band at a few of their weekly summer concerts. In turn, Ron and the Syracuse park board have invited the Elkhart band to play on Thursday, June 22, in the Lakeside Park. Ron says he isn’t sure if the lakes area band will be performing at that time as well. As a community effort, Ron has asked the administration at Wawasee High School if facilities and percussion instruments could be made available for the band to practice. Ron says the school has not yet offered a response to his request. Because the band will not have any stable financial backing to note, Ron says free-will support is always welcomed. The lakes area band is, at present, working to raise the necessary funds to purchase the 75 band uniforms. After the purchase, new emblems will be needed to replace the Elkhart Municipal Band patches which are now on the uniforms. Because the entire lakes area band will need to discuss plans for the free entertainment, Ron says he isn’t sure just how many concerts will be performed, “But, 1 envision probably two a month.” Besides the June 22 concert at Lakeside Park, the band has been invited to attend the

Commenting about Trans Tech's bid, Barton commented he received an overnight letter the next day indicating an error was made that would increase his firm’s bid. The company asked to either be allowed to add to the bid or withdraw without penalty. Robert Reed, board attorney, informed the board of alternatives before a decision was made. The options available were to go ahead and take the proposal of the low bidder as bid; not

The Cable Subscriber Bill of Rights states that MCAA members believe the cable systems are operating without effective competition and are therefore afforded monopoly status by the Deregulation Act of 1984. After the meeting, Stoddard declared that Syracuse is the first municipality in Indiana to sign the resolution and about the 35th in the country, joining many, larger cities such as Cincinnati and Mobile, Ala. He declared that news of the board's decision would be sent to a contact in California for airing to 40 countries by Wednesday, April 19. “This is definitely a move in the right direction to protect our First Amendment rights,” stated Stoddard The board voted to accept the joint plan of Cotton and Cotton Insurance and McClain Insurance to provide health insurance coverage for town employees, replacing the Blue Cross-Blue Shield policy. Dave Cotton explained that some benefits will increase and the SIOO deductible clause needs not be increased to $250 as Blue Cross proposed. The new plan is to start May 1 provided no employee has a medical situation which would cause his coverage to lapse. In this case the

award the contract to them; or allow the low bidder to withdraw provided the board get compensation out of the bond submitted. Dave Carey, noted he was not in favor of a suit against the bonding company and did not want to force the company to do a project where “we’re going to loose in the deal.” The board voted not to go with the low bidder without penalty. start of the new coverage will be deferred another month. Board members agreed they do not want any employee to suffer because of the coverage change. The board approved a change order for $49,441.24 to pay for improvements to South Main Street not covered by the EPA grant. Randy Lindley said this will be funded by the community improvement grant from the state. Another change order of $18,700 was approved to Adams Robinson Construction for some needed additions at the new sewage treatment plant. Lindley affirmed that these changes do not alter the plan to
