Warriors drop sectional game to Vikings
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer An up and down season came to an end on Friday night for the Wawasee boys’ basketball team as they were defeated 81-64 by Tippecanoe Valley in the semifinals of the 1989 Triton Sectional. Cogers complete season of ups and downs
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer Although the Wawasee boys' basketball team suffered through a losing season (8-13) during the recently completed 1988-89 campaign, head coach Gary Goshert remarked that there are things that are more important than just the wins or the losses that the team accumulated. “Although the emphasis on athletics today is to look at the win and loss record, I think that the more important thing to look at is the types of lessons that the players were able to learn throughout the season,” commented Goshert looking back over a season that had both its ups and its downs. Goshert remarked that although the Warriors may not have won as many games as they wanted to, the players had the opportuni.ty'difrifig the year to learn some valuable lessons such as accepting responsibility, working together as a unit, establishing a work ethic and just having fun playing together. “If you don’t realize that the learning process (the lessons), not just how many games you win or lose, is the important thing than you’re missing the whole point of high school athletics,” emphasized Goshert. After beginning the 1988-89 campaign with three tough losses by a total of seven points, Wawasee struggled through the 88 portion of its schedule (November and December) with a 2-6 mark heading into the new year. The 1989 part of the Warriors year began with the team's longest winning streak of the season as the squad put together victories over Plymouth, West Noble and Northridge to raise its record to 5-6. After the three game winning streak, the last six weeks of the season for’the Warriors was up and down as the team recorded an impressive 90-87 win over a very tough Whitko squad but then played poorly in consecutive losses on the road to East Noble (73-49) and Rochester (89-79) to

stand at 6-10 with four regular season games remaining. t Wawasee played well in its last four games of the season but came away with a 2-2 mark. The Warriors dropped a tough 68-66 overtime contest at Tippecanoe Valley on Feb. 11 but then rebounded to defeat North Wood 67-52 and Elkhart Central 77-69 to stand at 8-11 on the season with the home finale of the 88-89 season left versus Bremen. The Warriors played well in their regular season finale on Feb. 24 but came out on the short end of the stick as they were defeated 63-61 by a very good Bremen team. The loss left the Warriors 8-12 on the year heading into the Triton Sectional last week and a rematch with Tippecanoe Valley. The Warriors hung tough with Tippecanoe Valley during the first half last Friday (trailing just 37-31 at halftime), but the Vikings were able to pull away in the game’s last two quarters in a game that was a lot closer than the final score of 81-64 would indicate. The Vikings outscored the Warriors 36-13 from the free throw line including 22 of those 36 free throw points in the fourth quarter alone. The sectional loss completed the season with Wawasee at 8-13 for the year. Goshert remarked that some of the high points for the Warriors this past season included the three game winning streak after Christmas break as well as the win over Whitko at a time when the Wildcats were 11-1 on the season. He added that he was also pleased with the team’s defensive intensity in the victory at Elkhart Central as well as the squad’s effort and execution during the regular season overtime loss at Tippecanoe Valley. For the season, the Warriors connected on 472-980 (48 percent) field goal attempts including 66-167 (40 percent) from threepoint range while their opponents hit 470-968 (49 percent) field goals including 40-154 (26 percent) from beyond the three-point line. After taking their only lead of the game at 5-4 on a 3-point shot by senior Matt Dick with just under five minutes left in the first quarter, the Warriors fell behind 20-17 at the conclusion of the first period of play as Viking senior Pete Terpstra scored a basket just before the conclusion of the quarter. The Warriors were outscored on the season 1,357-1,314 as their opponents averaged 65 points-per-game while Wawasee averaged 63. Wawasee grabbed 573 rebounds (an average of 27 per game) on the year to just edge out their opponents who totaled 569 caroms (also an average of 27 per game) Two areas that hurt the Warriors were in the turnover category where Wawasee committed 309 while the opposition totaled 253 and in the foul department as the Warriors were whistled for a total of 424 fouls on the season while their opponents were called for 364. to grab a 28-17 lead before the Warriors were able to finally score a field goal almost halfway into the quarter (with 4:15 remaining). A 12-9 run by WawaSee enabled them to cut the Vikings lead to 37-31 at halftime as guard Matt Koble fired in a 3-point bomb at the buzzer to cap the Warrior rally. led Wawasee in scoring averaging 14 points-per-game while Matt Koble (10.9). Chris Conkling (9.3), Rob Huey (9.0), Pete Bonner (7.9) and Jeff Boyer (4.0) were next in line. Conkling led the team in rebounding grabbing a total of 98 caroms (4.7 per game) while Huey was right behind him with 96 total rebounds. Huey led the squad in field goal accuracy hitting 59 percent from the floor while Koble was the squad's top marksman from three-point range as he connected on 51 percent (41-81) of his attempts. Bonner compiled the Warriors best percentage at the free throw line as he hit 62-71 for 87 percent while he also led the squad with 102 assists (4.9 per game). Bonner, along with senior teammate Jeff Carey, led the Warriors in steals as each totaled 24 (1.1 per game).

trips down the floor with the chance to cut the lead but were unable to convert. From there, the Warriors fell behind by 12 points at 55-43 before a rebound basket by Chris Conkling made the score 55-45 in favor of Tippecanoe Valley with just one quarter of play left. “I felt that the key time in the game was in the third quarter when we were down by six points and had three opportunities to cut the lead and failed to do so," emphasized Goshert. "We had our chances but we didn’t take advantage of them and you have to give Valley credit because they did a nice job and they're a good team,” added Goshert. After Conkling started the fourth quarter with five straight points to cut the Vikings lead to 55-50, the Warriors went cold on the offensive end and Tippecanoe Valley went on a 10-2 run to lead 65-52. From there, it was a parade to the free throw line for the Vikings as they scored 14 of their final 16 points from the charity stripe as their lead ballooned to as many as 20 points as the Warriors were forced to foul to try and get back in the game. "We have several good shooters on this team and I’m confident with them when they do go to the free throw line to shoot,” commented Dußois after seeing his Vikings knock in 22 of 26 charity tosses in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. “In fact. I’m a little surprised if we don’t hit our free throw chances,”

added Dußois. Goshert commented that his team was hurt by the fact that guards Dick and Koble were unable to get free for very many shots as the two combined to attempt just 16 shots from the field on Friday night. “You have to give Smith (Scott) and Anglin (Dion) credit on defense because they were able to do a good job on Dick and Koble,” stated Goshert. From a team standpoint on Friday, the Warriors connected on 24-53 (45 percent) from the field including three 3-point shots while the Vikings hit 21-45 (47 percent) which also included three 3-pointers. As mentioned earlier, the Vikings were extremely accurate from the free throw line hitting 36-47 (77 percent) while the Warriors connected on 13-18 (72 percent). Wawasee grabbed a total of 36 rebounds on Friday while Tippecanoe Valley snared 22 caroms. The Warriors were guilty of committing 19 turnovers while the Vikings totaled just 11. The Wawasee offense was paced by Conkling who tallied 19 points to go along with a teamhigh nine rebounds. Dick and classmate Pete Bonner, both playing their final game for Wawasee, chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively while Koble, Rob Huey and Jeff Boyer each scored six.
