almost flawlessly for most of her routine, executing lhe difficult maneuvers before losing her balance on-a simple half turn "I made all my hard tricks so 1 just kind of stopped thinking." Stoller said Angela Kistler took fifth with a 7 65 hut the rest of the Warriors' balance beam contingent didn't fare too well So it came down to the final event, with the Warriors facing the baseball equivalent ol their last at-bat. Kistler stepped up to the mat and boom! She recorded a v 'fiomerun of a score, with an 8.45 Smith . boom' An 8.75; Butt boom! An 8 70. Pohl big boom, and a grand slam of a per forma nee with a score of 8.95 It was the highest score that Pohl has ever recorded on the floor exercise and she couldn't have picked a better tune to do it After their weak balance beam performances the Warrior girls knew they would nt’ed to raise their performance to a higher level We were all sifting there thinking we had to regain our composure and get out there and do our best tloor routines." Pohl said So that was the only way we could have won and we did it The Blue Blazer girls just couldn't keep up with the Warriors in the floor exercise although Lisa Mmichillo did take • first place in the event with a 9.0 Central coach Steve Rossi had mixed emotions about the meet He was pleased that his gymnasts beat the old Central team seeing record of 96 I points but he was disappointed that they didn't get the w in “We hoped to mqke up some points on beam but it just wasn't quite enough. " Rossi said Butt Leads I lie Way Coach Sumpter said Karen Butt was the spark in the War fiors' winning effort The 15-vear
because of in juries she sustained in a car accident I had an accident the night before so last year a'f regionals really wasn't a fair shot for me." Kistler sard \nne Pohl: She is the team's only senior and is particularly strong in the floor exercise, where she recorded five first place finishes in dual meets Pohl recorded a career high 8,95 in the floor exercise at the sectional She said she was happy that she was able to close out her high school career on a positive note I think it's the last time I ll probably ever do it 'gymnastics' in my whole life. Pohl said We ve won the past three years that I've been here and I wanted towin it again Karen Butt: She was the key to victory at the sectional, coming through with a first place finish on the vault, a second an the uneven bars and a fourth in the floor exercise It was the meet of a lifetime for the 15-year-old sophomore but she doesn’t plan to stop trying at the regional I han an exceptionally g'xirl
old sophomore put in the performance of her life Saturday, as she took first in the vault (8.60), seqpnd in the uneven bars (8.501 and fourth in the floor exercise (8 70) If she had competed on the balance beam she probably would have finished very high in the all-around competition "The person who pulled the team was Karen Butt." Sumpter said "She hit everything and hit it well I was hyper." Butt explained. "We really wanted to win That was a goal that we wanted to have " ' Angela Kistler was the only Wawasee gymnast to place in the all-around, taking third place with a total of 31 85 Elkhart Central's Lisa Minichillo was first with 33 9(1 while teammate Shan non Tourre finished second at 32.10 Regional Next Wawasees conquering gym nasts will take their act on the road on Friday when they travel west to the Valparaiso Regional. Along with Wawasee, the tough field of teams will include entries from Portage and Merrillville, along with several individual qualifiers The top four gymnasts in each sectional event earned the right to advance to regional competition, regardless of their team's performance Portage has a dual meet record of 9-1 and is ranked loth in the state while Merrillville owns an identical 9-1 record and kr'rTihkgd ninth The Warriors, w the dual meet season at 9-3. are unranked Coach Sumpter said she would fie happy if her team could clean up its balance beam routinesand slay strong in the other events With just one senior on the team Anne Pohl Sumpter thinks the Warriors' best days could lay ahead
meet.'' Butt explained ‘‘l pro bably won't do any better but i'll try my hardest to do better. " Britani Stoller: She put in the Warriors best balance beam routine at the sectional: Her fourth-place finish in the event was important because of the team's overall weak perfor mance on the beam The beam was a strong point for her in the regular season as she took first four times. I did a lot better this year than I did last year,'' Stoller said I Hid the same events but last year I felt more scared " Darcey Smith . She put in a fine performance in the floor exercise at the sectional, taking third with an 875 Smith-knew the team needed a strong performance in the. event aftbr the dreaded balance beam incident The 16-year old junior fell off the beam a few times herself, although she can t remember how.many times "It was terrible,'' Smith said. "I was too mad to count Diane Karst: She competed at the junior varsity level for most of the regular season but her vaulting abilities landed her a spot on the post season team She f inished in a tie for sixth place at the sectional with a score of 8 0 I was one of the middle people who might go 'on the teami and might not. Karst said It was a surprise to me Barb Signorelli: She par . ficipated in the uneven bars at the sectional and finished sixth with a 7 90 Signorelli thinks the team will b 4 stronger going into the regional than it was last year “I think we re a lot stronger on our events.
