Ellabelle Carr looks forward to retiring after 231/2 years in credit union
. By JI DI VI I.TAGGIO Staff H riter Reluctant to talk about herself. Ellabelle Carr spent most of her time talking about her job and the company where she has worked for the past 23 1 2 years She officially retires from the credit union of Dana Corporation March 10. She began there as treasurer in 1965.. Her enjoyment of her work and pride in being an important part of the credit union were evident as we spoke. f Profile Most Syracusians remember that the company was originally known as Weatherhead Company, which began in 1952. Ellabelle stated. "The credit union was established then, for members and their families, and Syracuse has always had the only ‘in-plant’ credit union office." Wanting to give further history of the company, Ellabelle said, “ Dana Corporation purchased Weatherhead in 1977, and is now known as Dana Corporation Spicer Axle Division. Their credit union, merged with the Fort Wayne Dana credit union in 1982 and Ellabelle, whose title by now was office manager, became branch manager.” Speaking more personally. Ellabelle said. "In a small office like that, for many years I was the only person there to greet the people and make the transactions necessary to the life of the credit union." As for retirement, she said. “I will miss the contact with the people. I will not miss the headaches, of course, but it was a good experience in the savings and loan field I hope I have contributed to the needs of the members in some small way. and I wish them continued growth and success."

Reminiscing about the way the work was done in her early years as treasurer, she said, “Originally, all the transactions and ledgers were hand-posted for each member. Later, they were posted on the old Burroughs posting machine. More recently, the ledgers were sent to Indianapolis where the work was completed and returned. When the company joined Fort Wayne seven years ago, a computer system was installed, so now transactions are put into the accounts immediately.” Ellabelle’s husband, Jack, still works at Dana, having begun “on the floor” with the company when it began. He presently holds the position of suppliers’ quality assurance engineer. She proudly stated, “He has been active in the credit union movement for 15 years, having served as president of the board of directors for 12 years.” Ellabelle and Jack have four daughters: Caron Pilgrim, Houston; Christie Krause, Syracuse; Connie Mays, Elwood; and Carol Carr, Warsaw They have two grandsons: Caron’s Neil, 18 months old; and Connie's Christopher, three years old. The typical modernday question is, “How did you manage home, family and job?” Ellabelle explained her own success. “I have always worked, the girls were very good, and I managed. When you work so many years and the family is young, you do what you have to do. Now that I’m retiring, I want to spend more time with my family.” Ellabelle especially has missed not being able to work in her yard, one of her favorite things to do. She enjoys all kinds of handicrafts, from knitting to oil painting. She also wants to get back into playing golf, which she has not had time to do. She gave up trying to find time for organizations and community involvement, but has continued to maintain an interest in animal rights’ groups. She let it be known that perhaps later she might want to do volunteer work in a hospital, and laughed as she added, “But not right now. I do not want to be responsible for going anywhere yet!” Accustomed to being a busy person, and with so many waiting special interests, no doubt Ellabelle will pursue her desires with the same dedication and enjoyment with which she did her office work.
