Willis Thomas Willis E. Thomas, 86, r 4, Syracuse, died at 7:06 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 1989, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse. Bom August 22, 1902, in Grant County, he was the son of Clinton and Magnolia Overman Thomas. On September 2, 1925, he was married to Lillian L. Stackhouse, who passed away in 1985. He was a manufacturer’s' representative for Lemmon Pharmaceutical Company in Pennsylvania. A member of North Webster United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias, Marion, and Scottish Rite, Indianapolis. His survivors include one son, Jesse Thomas, Boca Raton, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Ruth) Clow, Syracuse, Mrs. Earl (Geraldine) Love, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Mrs. Thomas (Rebecca) Prior, Eau Claire, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Naomi Bennett, North Webster. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, in Raven Funeral Home, Marion, with Rev. Louis Herchenroeder officiating. Entombment was in IOOF Cemetery, Marion. Third St., Mishawaka, died at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21,1989, in St. Joseph’s Medical Center, South’Bend, following a brief illness. He was a brother of Benjamin Zimmerman, Warsaw. 1, 1941, in Mishawaka, he was married to Ruth Ann Brechtel; she survives. Zimmerman was a fireman at Battell School, Mishawaka, where he had been employed since September 5, 1974. He received School City of Mishawaka’s Outstanding Grounds Award each year from 1984 to 1988. Prior to employment with School City, he had been service manager at Hibschman Pontiac in Mishawaka from 1940 to 1972. A 1933 graduate of Milford High School, he was a member of Unity of Michiana Church in South Bend, and was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Surviving in addition to his wife and brother are one son, Kevin L. Zimmerman, Indianapolis, three other brothers, Ozzie Zimmeririan, Peoria, 111., and Don Zimmerman and Warren Zimmerman, both of Dixon, Ill.; and two sisters, Esther High, Elkhart, and Lucille Zimmerman, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in Bubb Funeral Chapel,’ Mishawaka. Burial was in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Mishawaka. Slemmer, 66, r 1 box 61, North Webster, died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 1989, in his home, following an extended illness. Born June 2,1922, in Hessville, Ohio, he was the son of Fred and Flossie Overmeyer Slemmer. On January 19,1946, he was married to Edna “Marge’’ Denny; she survives. Milford, remains in fair condition in Elkhart Hospital after suffering a severe skull fracture when she fell on a snow-covered, icy area near her home on Thursday morning, March 2, at approximately 10:20 a.m. Mrs. Sorensen was taken to the emergency room of Goshen Hospital by her husband and was then transferred to Elkhart Hospital. She is in Room 2032. Syracuse EMS The Syracuse Emergency Medical Service made the following ambulance runs this past week: Harold Stahly; 81, 301 E. Boston St., Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 28, after the EMS was called to his homeat 11:54a.m. Paul Suddon, 35, r 2 box 414, Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital on Thursday, March 2. The EMS was called to his home at 4:34 p.m. Gail Dillard, 34, 131 E. Boston St., Syracuse, was not taken to a hospital by the EMS after she came to the fire station at 10:25 p.m. Thursday. The EMS was called to the home of Denny Darr, 39, 701 Pittsburgh St., Syracuse, at 11:28 p.m. Thursday. Darr was taken to Goshen Hospital. Adalade Martin, 84, Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital on Friday, March 3, after the EMS was called at 1:53 p.m. The EMS was called to 200 North Street at 3:30 p.m., Friday. Wednesday, March 1, 1989, in Naples. Born August 1, 1910, in Roanoke, he was the son of Jason and Effie Feighner Patten. On November 24, 1934, he was married to Vivian Hughes, who passed away in 1985. Patten moved from Barbee Lake to Florida in 1977. He was a carpenter and a member of Masonic Lodge and Order of the Easter Star, Roanoke, and Scottish Rite and Mizpah, Fort Wayne. Having spent most of her life in Kosciusko County, she was a graduate of Marion Hospital where she became a registered nurse. She worked several years for Dr. J. R. Baum in McDonald Hospital, and later was office nurse for Dr. G. W. Stalter, North Webster. She also worked many years as obstetrical supervisor in Murphy Medical Center. Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Ann Miller, and one son, Tom Conley, both of Warsaw; two grandsons; and two sisters, Marcella Glasgow, Hudson, and Lucille Snell, Albany. Burial followed in New Paris Cemetery. Robert B. Miller Robert B. Miller, 81, r 4, Syracuse, died at 12:50 a m. Sunday, March 5, 1989, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse. Born November 12, 1907, in Kendallville, he was the son of Bruce and Florence Dußois Miller. On April 4, 1932, he was married to Helen Stevenson; she survives. Having moved from Gary to Syracuse 13 years ago, he was retired from the Gary Fire Department after 33 years, serving as a fireman and assistant chief. He also worked at Anderson Co., Gary, as chief of security and fire prevention. He was a member of Calvpry United Methodist Church, Syracuse, Wawasee Kiwanis Club and Gary Firefighters Union. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Carol) Lough, Hobart; one son, Bruce R. Miller, Westland, Mich.; four grandchildren; one sister, Drucilla Baker, Pentwater, Md.; and one brother, Gordon Miller, White Water, Wis. Peter Janssen Peter Janssen, 67, r 1, Pierceton, died at 4:46 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 1989. in Kosciusko Community Hospital. He was former owner of Briar ' Patch Restaurant, Leesburg. *' Borri September 16, 1022. in Drirten, Netherlands, he was the son of Arnold and Gerda Fredericks Janssen. On December 23, 1947, in Druten, he
was married to Ida VanMeerten, she survives. He moved from South Holland, 111., to Kosciusko County in 1979. He attended medical school in the Netherlands, law enforcement schools in Chicago, 111., Paris, France, and Palos Hills, 111., and was in the service from 1939 to 1952. He was a retired private investigator and president of C. P. Security Service, Inc., South Holland. A member of South Holland American Legion, Warsaw Eagles, and Emmanuel Reformed Church, Chicago, and past member of Dalton Rotary. Dalton, 111., he attended Central Baptist Church, Riverdale, 111. He served in Dutch and British armies, with the Dutch Underground and in 1940 was incarcerated in Boehen Prison Camp, Germany. He spent 13 months in an SS labor camp in Posen, Poland. He also served in the Korean Conflict from 1946-51 and received numerous citations and medals. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons,, David Janssen, Pierceton, Peter Janssen, South Holland, and Gerrit Janssen, Lowell; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son. Services were held at 10 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, March 8, in Drumm Funeral Home, South Holland, with Rev. Robert Preston officiating. Burial was in Beverly Cemetery, Worth, 111. She was the mother of Virginia O’Brien, Leesburg. Born in Medicine Lodge, Kan., she lived most of her life in Fort Wayfie. She was married to John Sloan, who passed away in 1982. She and her husband owned Sloan Funeral Home in Fort Wayne. Surviving in addition to her daughter are four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frieda Roth, Denver, Colo., and Juanita Burton, Wichita, Kan.; and one brother, Lewis Clark, Wichita.
