Wawasee edged by Bremen, finishes regular season 8-12
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
If a close, down to the wire contest is a good character builder for a team heading into their sectional, then the Wawasee Warriors should be well prepared for the “second season” after suffering a 63-61 loss to visiting Bremen in their regular season finale last Friday. “You have to give Bremen a lot of credit because they hung in there and Stayed patient,” remarked Warrior head coach Gary Goshert after seeing his squad conclude the regular season at 8-12. The Warriors suffered six of their 12 setbacks during the year by a combined total of 13 points. A strong start by the Warriors on Friday evening put them in control early as junior forward Chris Conkling popped in 10 points (on five field goals) to stake the hosts to a 17-10 lead after the first quarter of action. “They were outhustling us to the loose balls early and beating us to the post to get the shots and I had to get on our players a little bit to get them going,” stated Bremen boss Larry Lael who called a timeout late in the first quarter to try and regroup his squad. After two free throws and a basket by Wawasee's Pete Bonner opened the Warriors lead to 21-10 early in the second quarter, the visiting Lions began to roar as a 21-11 run enabled them to knot the score at 32-32 at halftime. “We were a lot more aggressive in the second quarter and it showed in the score,” stated Lael. Bremen’s Tim Lawmaster was the catalyst for the Lions comeback in the second quarter as he poured in 12 of his 16 first half points from his forward position but it was the 11 turnovers by Wawasee that really helped the Lions more than, anything. "We let them right back in the game with our lack of poise, patience and execution in the second quarter. We not only lost our momentum with our turnovers but we also gave them opportunities in transition that let them make up the deficit,” stated Goshert. The third quarter of Friday’s

contest was close throughout as the Warriors grabbed their largest lead of the period at 42-36 on a basket by center Rob Huey midway through the quarter. After Huey was whistled for his third foul with 3:40 left, reserve Jeff Boyer made his presence felt right away by throwing in three field goals to help the Warriors to a 50-47 advantage with one quarter remaining. A 3-point bomb by Wawasee’s Matt Koble and a Huey field goal increased the Warriors lead to 55-47 to start the fourth quarter before a 10-2 run enabled the Lions to tie the game at 57-57 before Goshert took a timeout with 3:06 left in the game. After four Bremen free throws gave them a 61-58 lead with 1:04 left in the game, Wawasee’s Matt Dick connected on a 3-pointer to knot the score at 61-61. After working the clock down to :37 seconds, Bremen took a timeout. The visiting Lions then

worked another 23 seconds off the clock before calling another timeout with 14 ticks left in the game. After inbounding the ball, Bremen looked to their “big" man. 6’4” center Jon Feldman, who was fouled as he attempted to get a shot off with just four seconds left. After a Wawasee timeout, Feldman stepped calmly to the line and nailed both charity tosses to give the Lions a 63-61 lead. Wawasee had one last gasp attempt but the Warriors inbounds pass was intercepted and Bremen had its 15th victory of the season. “We kept our composure late in the game and we were able to get to the free throw line where we’ve been able to win some close games this season. This was our last game in the NLC (Bremen will play in the Northern States Conference next season) and the kids were ready for it and it was a big win because Wawasee has an excellent team," said Lael.

Gymnastics team is geared up for sectional
By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
If Monday night’s meet was any indication, the Wawasee High School gymnastics team is peaking just in time for sectionals on Saturday. The Warriors closed out the regular season in grand fashion, raising their record to 9-3 with a 100.25-83.00 victory over DeKalb. It was the highest team score ever recorded in Tracy Sumpter’s four-year stint as Wawasee’s gymnastics coach. “This is great,” Sumpter said. "They needed this for sectional.” Wawasee’s score was inflated by a solid team effort, with several gymnasts recording their highest scores of the season. Even the dreaded balance beam was a strong point for the Warriors as three of their girls had scores in excess of 8.0. “If we can score eights on beam, you know our team score is going to be high,” Sumpter said. Wawasee junior Angela Kistler placed first on the beam with an 8.55 and DeKalb’s Angie Bishop came in second with an 8.40. Anne Pohl and Britani Stoller, of the Warriors, tied for third with each notching a score of 8.10. The other three events were clean sweeps for Wawasee's gymnasts. Karen Butt sizzled through her floor exercise routine en route to an impressive firstplace score of 8.85. Britani Stoller took second with an 8.70 and Darcey Smith scored an 8.65 to come away with third place. Anne Pohl and Angela Kistler also topped the 8.0 mark in the event. --

Pohl took first in the vaulting competition with a 7.95 while Kistler finished just .05 of a point behind, in a two-way tie for second. Barb Signorelli tied with Kistler to make it a Wawasee sweep. The uneven bars was another strong event for Wawasee as four Warriors finished with scores in excess of 8.0. Angela Kistler scored an 8.75 to take first and Karen Butt was second with an 8.45. Britani Stoller finished third with an 8.35 and Barb Signorelli scored a 8.20 en route to a fourthplace finish. Angela Kistler was tops in the all-around with a combined total of 33.60. Wawasee's Nikki Marsh scored 28.25 in the junior varsity ranks and finished in a tie for second with DeKalb's Shelby Davidson. Signorelli was chosen as Wawasee's gymnast of the meet. The Warriors' JV team also put in a fine performance Monday. Its score of 85.00 was higher than DeKalb's varsity score. DeKalb’s JV could only muster a 56.70. Nikki Marsh placed first in JV uneven bars competition while Signorelli stepped down from the varsity ranks to record first place finishes in the balance beam and the floor exercise. Darcey Smith was first in the vault.
JV squad drops close one to Bremen, ends season 9-11
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
"This game really typified our entire season because we were close a lot of times this year and just didn't get the win,” remarked Kem Zolman, Wawasee boys' junior varsity basketball coach, after seeing his squad drop a 42-39 regular season finale to Bremen last Friday. The JV squad, which finished the season with a 9-11 mark, started off quick against the Lionsjumping out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter of action as Keith Hardy tossed in nine points for the Warriors. The second period of play on Friday started with the visiting Bremen squad scoring the first six points of the quarter to grab a 16-15 advantage. The Warrior offense struggled throughout the second quarter as the hosts totaled just three points in six minutes of play and consequently found themselves trailing Bremen 24-18 at halftime. The JV Warrior squad came out cold on the offensive end in Friday’s third quarter and was outscored 11-8 during the session to fall behind 35-26 at the end of the third quarter. A 4-0 run by the host Wawasee team enabled them to cut the Bremen lead to 35-30 with just under three m'inutes to play in the contest. After the Lions took a 39-33 lead with about a minute and a half left in the final quarter, the Warriors were able to draw within three points at 40-37 with 41 seconds left but that was as close as they could get. Hardy paced the Warrior attack with 18 points while teammate Jason Mickley chipped in with eight points. The W'awasee squad received a fine effort from its bench against Bremen as Randy Cesco (eight). Chad Hoffert (two) and freshman Thanh Tran (three), making his first JV'Appearance, combined for 13 points "We played pretty well for a quarter or so like we did in a lot of our games this season but our lack of concentration and consistency really hurt us," stated Zolman. After beginning the 1988-89 campaign with losses to Fort Wayne Carroll. Fairfield and Concord, the Warrior JV squad won four in a row and six of its next seven (the only defeat coming at Mishawaka) to stand at 6-4 after the first half of the season. "We got off to a slow start but then we made a change in our starting line-up and something just turned us around .and we played well for about a month," stated Zolman. After defeating Westview 47-44 at home on Jan. 21, the JV eagers lost to Whitko and East Noble to stand at 7-8 on the year with five games remaining. A two game winning streak (a 41-40 victory at Rochester and a 47-39 win at home over North Wood) put the squad back over the .500 mark at 9-8 before losses at Tippecanoe Valley (50-41), at Elkhart Central (41-39) and at home to Bremen last Friday concluded the squad's season with a 9-11 record. According to Generals Coach Red Klotz, it's his best team ever. “We are determined tb beat the ' Harlem Globetrotters once and for all and bring their streak to a screeching halt.” Globetrotters Coach Ellington welcomes the newly invigorated opposition. “I can assure our fans, and Mr. Klotz, that this year’s Globetrotters team is the finest in history. seemed like we would play well for part of the game but then we would let up at the most important part of our games and that cost us,” commented Zolman. Despite the team’s losing record, Zolman said that he saw a lot of improvements from the team during the season. “We had a pretty balanced team althoi gh we didn’t have an overpowering offense and the kids did a good job with the roles that they had on the team,” said Zolman. “We’re hoping that this year’s junior varsity players have their consistency come out next year and what they need to realize is that their hard work and play on the defensive end is what will determine their success on the basketball court in the future,” insisted Zolman.
