Warriors gearing up for sectional
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
With “Hoosier Hysteria’’ already underway at some of the 64 sectional sites throughout the state (the tournament action began on Monday evening), the Wawasee Warriors will begin their quest for the right to play at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis on March 25 in the state's final four when they play at 8 p m on Friday at Triton against the winner of tonight’s Tippecanoe Valley-Rochester contest Wawasee, which received a bye in the sectional draw, was defeated by both Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester during the regular season and head coach Gary Goshert remarked that he has no preference as to who the Warriors will square off against on Friday. “It doesn’t matter to me who we play on Friday and I don’t think that it matters to our players because both of the teams beat us earlier in the season and it would be nice to have a chance to play both of them again to avenge those losses,” said Goshert. “I’m happy that we don’t have to play tonight and that we get a couple of extra days of preparation time,” commented Goshert about receiving the bye in the tournament pairings He added that he feels that his team will be prepared for Friday night’s-con-test and ready to play. Goshert said that tonight’s opening game of the Triton Sectional between the Vikings of Tippecanoe Valley and the Zebras of Rochester should be a good game. “I wouldn’t try to pick a winner of tonight's game because anything can happen once you get to sectional time,” insisted Goshert The Tippecanoe Valley squad defeated Rochester 98-84

STALKING — Garrett Ponciroli stalked his way to a 37-3 record and a fifth-place finish at state competition during the 1988-89 wrestling season. The Wawasee senior was given another honor recently when he was named to the NLC all-conference wrestling team as its top grappler at 189 pounds.
during their regular season meeting on Jan. 20. The Warriors dropped a 89-79 decision at Rochester on Feb. 3 as the Zebras "scoring machine”, 6"1” senior guard Steve Ruckman, poured in 37 points. Ruckman, who has been among the leading scorers in the state throughout the season, heads into sectional action tonight averaging right around 30 points-per-game. “If we face Rochester on Friday, we'll have to hang on to Ruckman and try to control him while also keeping their other players from hurting us with their offense." stated Goshert who watched as four Rochester players other than Ruckman scored in double figures during the team’s regular season contest. Wawasee suffered a tough 68-66 overtime loss at Tippecanoe Valley on Feb. 11 as Viking guard Scott Smith drove the length of the court for the winning lay-up as time expired. Dion Anglin paced the Vikings versus Wawasee with 21 points while teammatesSteve Dunnuck, Craven Lynn and Pete Terpstra chipped in with 14, 12 and nine points respectively. “If we have to play Tippe Valley on Friday, we’ll have to limit their opportunities by keeping them off the offensive boards and we’ll have to contest their 3-point shooters (Anglin and Terpstra),” emphasized Goshert. In order to be successful on Friday evening, Goshert said that his squad will have-to play with patience and keep their turnovers down on the offensive end of the court. “The biggest kev on Friday will be how well we play on the defensive end of the floor because that’s been our most inconsistent area throughout the season,” concluded Goshert Friends: People who dislike the same people
