Letters to the editor
Toughlove: Support group for parents
Dear Editor: 1 have been reading this paper and "Letters to the Editor" since about 1949 and things seem never to change People who have the strongest ideas, good or bad. are the ones who ask to have their names withheld by request for whatever reason In the article when I was interviewed by The Mail-Journal several weeks ago and made the statement that "If you don't believe in Toughlove, you don't believe in God," I went on to say that if He were sitting at our table He would agree with our ideals. I really believe this. I agree with "Name Withheld by Request" on practically everything. Our children need all the loving we can give them, positive family activity, church, hugs and kisses, etc , and the idea of the old round-table family discussion. We need to keep communication going within the family, church and school. But after months and months, and
Thankful for Toughlove
Dear Editor: This is in response to thg “Arti cle Strikes Home" letter, MJ, February 22. by Name Withheld. This letter, in regards to Toughlove, contained some very valid points. Kids today certainly do have a tough row to hoe. with the abundance of "drugs, booze and loose sex," the peer pressure, etc. Spending time with your children, hugging them, communicating with them, getting to know them, and encouraging them are vital elements of a healthy growing family. "The old table meeting for the whole family is still best in the long run." . No one can argue with those principles. Unfortunately, there's more to the story. What would you recommend for the family who believes in and tries to live by these same principles and is still being torn apart by a troubled child 9 How do you "guide" a child who thinks it's his or her right to party every weekend, to come home drunk or high, stay out all night, or participate in other

owners of Waterson s Grocery near the former fish hatchery site, have put the store on the market. However. Dick has stated if the store sells, fine, but if it doesn't he and his wife will continue operating the store. "We’ll never close it.” commented Dick, who added. “If I can't sell It, everything will stay as it is.” The Watersons will soon be starting their 10th year at the store as they opened the doors in 1980. Dick added that even if the store is sold, he will not leave the Lake Wawasee area. SPEAKING OF changes. Dick Waterson noted that three weeks ago he sold the bait store to Ed and Linda. Farmwald. Syracuse. The new name will be "Top Notch Bait and Tackle.” Ed is an executive with Jayco Manufacturing and Linda is with Pier 13 Real Estate. North Webster.
even years, of all this good positive input, what do you do when things with your situation get even worse? I do not know what “Name Withheld by Request" means when the term "Groupies" is used I would please like an explanation of the term "Groupies." Toughlove is a support group for parents who are trying to work with their children to change their unacceptable or self-destructive behavior. The Good Lord tells us to love and care for our children; He also tells us to discipline. 1 sincerely love kids, whether they are my own or someone else's. -You're more than welcome to ask my own children, or anyone I am a very loving and affectionate person; that's why I feel so strongly about Toughlove It works and. after almost four years of working with Toughlove parents, we have the testimonials to prove it.
family-disrupting or selfdestructive behavior? What do you say to parents who have done their best, tried their hardest, and they and the rest of the family are still being torn apart by the actions of one member? They've talked with the child, their minister, school and professional counselors, prayed, read books, and the situation just isn't getting any better. Can you relate to their situation? That's exactly why Toughlove was founded. In a sense. Tough love parents are "groupies." Toughlove parents meet in a group with others experiencing similar problems for mutual support and to exchange ideas on how so save a family — every member of the family. You suggested that "what works for the Smith family won't always work for the Jones." You couldn't be more right. It sounds like your family has no need for Toughlove. You can thank God for that! For the (hopefully) few families who need Toughlove, thank God for Toughlove. Name withheld by request
