It happened ... in Milford
10 YEARS AGO, FEB. 28, 19'9 Word has been received from Tempe, Ariz., of the death of former Indiana State Senator John F. Augsburger. at the age of 73. Death came Tuesday afternoon in an Arizona hospital where he had been admitted last week. Augsburger and his late wife, the former Dorothy Bird of Milford, founded the Augsburger Super Valu chain when they opened a small grocery store in Milford in October of 1936. Jean (Warstleri Zimmerman, a former resident of the Milford area, now of North Manchester spoke of her experiences in the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Facility, Boulder, Colo., demonstration in April of 1978. Morcott, Dana president “We are unable to identify potential values in the combination that would justify an increased price. “ On January 17. Dana began a tender offer to acquire up to 17.320,000 Champion shares for $17.50 cash pursuant to an agreement with Champion intended to result in the acquisition of Champion by Dana. 30 YEARS AGO. FEB. 26. 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Disher. owners of the Milford Case, served free coffee last Friday and Saturday in observance of their first anniversary of opening. National Future Farmers of America Week is being observed from Feb. 23 through Feb. 28. The local FFA is very active and has planned many activities for—the coming season. Bob Beer and Wayne Sholtey are applying for the Hoosier Farmer degree to be awarded at the State convention in April. Ed Stephenson submit ted the winning essay from district II in the state essay con test. The East Side Merry Maidens met at the home of Pam Treesh at which time the leader gave out the year books. The demonstra tion was given by Carol and Joyce Beer and Pam Treesh. The members went ice skating on the lake in front of the Treesh home at Waubeelake.

Phillip Campbell has purchased the Gafill D-X territory formerly serviced by Robert Hurd for eight years, it was announced this morning. Mr. Campbell has been associated with his father in Campbell’s Market for several years since his graduation from Milford high school. Robert Hurd has accepted employment at the First National Bank in Warsaw, and after a period of training, will hold a like position in the Milford branch of the First National Bank, relieving Samuel Ellison. All students of the Milford schools will be dismissed at 11:20 a m. Friday. This dismissal will enable all those wishing to attend the sectional tourney underway at Columbia City to attend the afternoon session. Mrs. Milo Geyer, who has made her home for the winter with Mrs. Irvin Coy, will return to her farm home on March 1.

From the Syracuse Police Log is a weekly feature which presents a sampling of the incidents the officers from the Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse Police Department are called upon to deal: WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22 A fireman was sent to check on an activated fire alarm at a home. The dispatcher received a call from a pejson who reported the fire alarm was going off. The fireman reported everything was all right after the home was checked for smoke and fire. Police took care of a complaint about a dog after the dispatcher was notified of a problem in a housing development area. THURSDAY, FEB. 23 Horses do lay down some time according to a veterinarian. The dispatcher received a call from a person concerned about seeing a horse laying on the ground, south on SR 13. A veterinarian was contacted and confirmed the fact that horses lay down. Defensive driving classes can be taken to get points off of a driver’s license was the answer a person received after asking the dispatcher what classes he could take to get the points

Kosciusko County Police investigated eight accidents during the past week which involved Lakeland residents. No one was injured. One person was arrested. Charles F. Loyd, 25, r 1 box 204, EMS Lane B60:16, North Webster, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while suspended and possession of marijuana, following a one-vehicle accident Friday, Feb. 24, at 6:15 p.m. The accident occurred on CR 650E, east of EMS Lane 853. Loyd was released on $350 cash bond. Loyd told police he was traveling east on CR 650E in a 1976 Pontiac when he lost control of the vehicle as it rounded a curve. The vehicle struck a mailbox owned by Bob Goodyear, r 1, Warsaw. Damage was estimated up to SI,OOO to the car and under S2OO to the mailbox. No one was injured when Carson R. May. 27, r 5 box 385, Syracuse, lost control of his 1979 Ford vehicle. The vehicle crossed the centerline of the south bound lane, into the north bound lane and collided with a 1979 Plymouth. Jeffrey B. Coughenour, 28, r 3 box 381, Syracuse, was driving the other vehicle, and told police he drove his vehicle off the road to avoid the collision. The accident occurred Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7:49 p.m., on SR 25, south of CR 300 W. Damage was estimated up to SI,OOO to each vehicle. Driver inattention was blamed for a one-vehicle accident Friday, Feb. 24. at 10:54 p.m., on East Shore Drive, Syracuse. Darci M. Ringler,, r 5 box 481A, Syracuse, was traveling south in a 1983 Honda when she drove it off the road, hitting a Northern Indiana Public Service Company pole. She told police she drove off the road to avoid other traffic. Damage was estimated up to $2,500 to the car, and under SIOO to the pole. A two-vehicle accident was investigated Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6:50 a.m., on CR 1300 N, east of CR 175E. Charles R. Hershberger, 39, PO Box 55, Silver Lake, was driving a 1985 Ford, registered to Flexsteel Industries, New Paris, east on CR 1300 N when it sideswiped a 1984 Chevrolet Blazer. FRIDAY, FEB. 24 The smell of a lot of smoke and possibility of seeing flames sent a police officer to check an area after the dispatcher received the call. Eleven minutes after the call was received the officer reported he checked the area of the report and could not locate the smell of smoke nor flames. Attempts to get an injured dog to the veterinarian failed. The dispatcher was notified by an off duty officer of a dog that had been hit along SR 13, north of Dairy Queen. The veterinarian requested the dog be taken to his clinic, but within nine minutes of receiving the call, the dog died. SATURDAY, FEB. 25 The dispatcher issued a snowmobile application after a person came to the station requesting such an application. SUNDAY, FEB. 26 A man came to the fire station to turn in a woman’s billfold he had found. The officer on duty attempted to locate the owner, but was unable to do so. Approx-

Ferrell, 23, r 1 box 5705, Leesburg, escaped injury when his car was struck by a Conrail train Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10:55 p.m. The accident was on Armstrong Road, west of the intersection of Baseline Road. Ferrell’s 1989 Nissan Sentra became stuck in the rocks, next to the tracks, after he ran his vehicle off the road to avoid hit.ting another car. Ferrell had left the car to attempt to find help when an east bound train hit the front end of the vehicle. The train engineer was Riley D. Watkins, 52, r 2 box 46. Dalevill. There was no damage to the train engine and up to $5,000 to the vehicle. Road conditions caused four accidents Monday evening, Feb. 20. A 1978 Chevrolet driven by Paul Doroth Chafin, 36. r 6 box 95Warsaw, struck a United Telephone Company pole after he lost control of the vehicle on the ice and slush covered road. The accident occurred on CR 350 N, west of CR 100E, at 11:50 p.m. Damage was estimated up to $2,500 to the vehicle and up to SI,OOO to the pole. Kathy L. Booher, 24. r 7 box 450, Warsaw, was traveling east on Levi Lee Road, in a 1980 Toyota when she lost control of the vehicle on the icy road and hit a UTS junction box. Damage was estimated up to SI,OOO each to the vehicle and box. The accident occurred at 9:34 p.m. Shane A. Trump, 16, r 1 box 328-B, Pierceton, was not hurt when his 1983 Chevrolet struck a REMC pole after he lost control of the vehicle on the slick road. The Syracuse officer on duty was sent to check a report of a person riding an ATV on Warner Road, near Pickwick Road. The closest conservation officer was near Tippecanoe Lake and requested Syracuse police investigate. When the local officer checked the area, no ATV rider could be located. A county officer requested the dispatcher to contact CSX Railroad and report there was a railroad crossing blocked leading to the north side of Lake Wawasee. The railroad company reported the train would be moving in a short time. MONDAY, FEB 27 Another insurance accident report form was given to a person after calling and requesting to know if he could get another one. He messed up the first one. The county dispatcher reported the car found in a ditch was a stolen vehicle and requested Syracuse Police have it towed. A wrecker service was contacted and the owner told where the car could be found
