"The church is the people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior and placed their trust in him.” — Arthur Hershberger is the pastor of the Milford Chapel, in Milford. The Church The church had its beginning on the Day of Pentecost. It could not have come before that, for Christ had to die in order to redeem the church. It had to be purchased with His blood. The church could not have begun before the resurrection of Christ, for He had to be raised from the dead so its members could have resurrection life. The Lord Jesus ascended to heaven be.fore the church began, so He would be the Head of the church. The church could not build itself, just as the physical church building can not

build itself. It has to wait for the Holy Spirit to come for that very purpose. On the same day that the Holy Spirit came to earth, the church came into being. Today, the word church has come to mean a building in which people meet. But, when it began, the word church meant people — called out ones. Called out ones are believers who have been called out from among unbelievers. Matthew. 16:13-18 tells about Jesus talking to his disciples andasking, “Who do men say that I am?” Their answer: "Some say that you are John the Baptist. Some say that you are Elijah or one of the other prophets.” Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of God.” Then Jesus answered. “Bless you, Peter. God, I will build my church, add nothing will ever be able to destroy it.”* The book of Acts tells us that just before Jesus returned to heaven. He told His disciples that after He was gone they should go back to Jerusalem and wait for God's spirit — the Holy Spirit to come to them. “You will receive power from God after the Holy Spirit come to you." Jesus said. “You will preach about me in Jerusalem, and Judea, in Samaria and in the far-away parts of the world.” Then Jesus was taken up into heaven and his disciples could see Him no more. They went back to Jerusalem and waited for the Holy Spirit to come. Then one day — Pentecost— the Holy Spirit came to them. Peter stood up and preached the first sermon. He told the people how they had crucified God’s Son. The people were worried because they had crucified the one they had waited for for so long. What would they do now? “What shall we do?” they asked Peter.

Peter answered, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The people believed Peter. They believed that Jesus is the Son of God. They were sorry that they had crucified Him and sinned against God. They wanted to be forgiven. They wanted God to make it all right again. That very day, 3,000 people were baptized. This was the beginning of the church. It wasn’t long until 5,000 people were added to the church. As time went by, the Christians went into Judea, then Samaria and finally through all the world. (EDITOR'S NOTE: The above comments on the Bible account were taken from a lesson written in 1975 for the Milford Christian Church and from several sermon notes.)
