Ponciroli takes fifth 6at state wrestling meet
By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
Garrett Ponciroli had a lot to be proud of and a little to be discouraged about in last weekend’s state wrestling competition in Indianapolis. He went 2-1 in the 189-pound class during two days of competition at Market Square Arena and came away y ith a fifth-place finish. Along with the pride of establishing himself as the state’s fifth best wrestler in his weight class, Ponciroli has to deal with the disappointment of knowing he capable of winning the championship. The 18-year-old senior’s only loss came in a controversial 2-1

decision to eventual champion Jason Greer of Princeton. Greer received the go-ahead point in the match when Ponciroli was penalized by the referee for stalling. Warriors coach Dave VanLue said it was a poor call and that Greer could have easily been penalized for stalling as well. “It was a shame that it had to be decided on something like that,” VanLue said. “I dqn’t think he was any better than Garrett.’’’ Ponciroli advanced to Saturday’s round of play with an 11-7 victory over Pendleton Heights’ Matt Shaffer on Friday night. He lost to Greer on Saturday morning and came back in the afternoon to score a 7-1 victory over

Brian Nelson of Crown Point. Ponciroli ended the season with a 37-3 record, and regional and semi-state championships to his credit. He had been penalized for stalling in the Goshen Semi-State title tilt on Saturday,-Feb. 11 but came through with some lastsecond heroics for a 3-1 win. Ponciroli tried to make history repeat itself in his match against Greer. He threw his opponent to the mat in the waning seconds but didn’t have enough time to press his advantage and get any points out of the situation. “If he had a few more seconds he would have had him,” VanLue said. Greer had some tough matches on his trek to the championship but none were as close as his squeaker with Ponciroli. Greer's opponent in the final had been beaten by Ponciroli at the Goshen semi-state. VanLue said his grappler performed as well as anybody at the state competition. “I think Garrett did a great job,” he said. “It was a super effort.” Ponciroli also received recognition for his work in the classroom while he was in Indianapolis. He was named to the Indiana All State wrestling First Team. Teammates Shawn Jones and Tom Mangas received honorable mentions in the contest. The competition was open to regional qualifiers who excel in the academic world as well as the athletic world. ASS advanced to title tilt Augsberger’s-Sunbeam-Seyferts advanced to the Wawasee Adult Basketball "League championship game with a 68-56 semifinal victory over Wawasee Boat Company Tuesday. Bonner and Ponciroli selected as Wawasee's 'Top Warriors'
Wawasee seniors Pete Bonner (basketball) and Garrett Ponciroli (wrestling) are the first two athletes to be selected as "Top Warrior,” a new honor started at Wawasee High School by the student council and the cheerleading squad. The “Top Warrior’’ was established to recognize the outstanding performances of both male and femalg athletes at Wawasee. The award, which is given on the basis of nominations by Wawasee coaches, will be given out when there are performances that merit recognition according to Cindy Peterson, a Wawasee instructor and coordinator for the honor. Bonner, who was selected for the week of Feb. 6-12, turned in two very solid efforts during that time as helped the basketball team defeat North Wood 67-52 on Feb. 10 as he scored a team-high 15 points. Bonner also registered a solid performance the following

The Wawasee Warriors gymnastics team recorded its fourth straight victory with a 96.8-91.1 win over the Plymouth Rockies at Plymouth last night (Tuesday). Wawasee’s girls notched their second highest team point total of the season, while raising their record to 8-1. Warriors coach Tracy Sumpter said her team’s improved scores can be traced to continued improvement on the balance beam and more creative vault routines. “Some girls are starting to throw some new vaults that they weren't before and that’s helped their scores,” she said. Angela Kistler led the way for Wawasee, winning the all-around for the second time in two meets. She took first in the vaulting competition with a score of 8.40, and notched second place finishes on the uneven bars and balance beam with scores of 8.0 and 8.2 respectively. Kistler’s combined total of 32.65 put her .35 of a point ahead of Plymouth’s Lisa Hollenbaugh in the all-around. Nikki Marsh was voted Wawasee’s gymnast of the meet. She won the all-around in junior varsity competition. With sectionals looming on the horizon, the Warriors are hoping to gain some momentum in their final meets. They have three more days of competition before hosting the sectional on Saturday, March 4. The team’s scores have steadily increased but Sumpter sees room for improvement. "They have the ability to be two to three points higher,” she said. The Warriors will get a chance to encounter some top-notch competition on Thursday when they travel to Kendallville for a trimeet with Homestead and East Noble. Wawasee’s girls will then compete in the Lakeland Invitational on Saturday, before wrapping up the regular season Monday with a home match against DeKalb. Wawasee vs. Huntington North Vikings Wawasee’s gymnasts recorded their highest team score of the season on Thursday, when they knocked off Huntington North 97.10-86.45 at Wawasee High School.
