Nine swimmers going to state, team captures third at sectional

By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer

“We swam great and the guys really came through with their performances in the finals.” exclaimed a very happy Tim Caldwell, Wawasee boys’ swim coach, after watching nine members of the Warriors squad qualify for the state finals as the team turned in an outstanding effort at the swimming and diving sectional held at Warsaw last Saturday. The Warriors, who finished the sectional in third place behind champion Warsaw and runner-up Concord, will be sending all seven of the s nic members of their team as wen as one junior and one sophomore to the state competition on Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University' Natatorium in Indianapolis. The nine Warriors who qualified for" the state meet is the highest total in the school s history and was the most of any of the 11 teams that participated in last Saturday's sectional competition. "Turning in a good effort as a team at the sectional is important but having guys continue their season by qualifying for the state meet is the most important thing to get accomplished at the sectional level. The ability to cash in on opportunities from the free throw line along with a 15 point fourth quarter performance from senior guard Matt Dick enabled the Wawasee boys' basketball team to come away with a 77-69 win over Elkhart Central on Saturdayevening at North Side Gym in Elkhart. Wawasee. now 8-11 on the year, was outscored by the host Blue Blazer’s by a count of 56-45 from the field on Saturday but the Warriors were able to convert 32 free throw chances while Central scored just 13 points from the charity stripe The Warriors camd out aggressively against the Blue Blazers in the first quarter as they exploited the Central defense on several occasions with back-door plays for baskets in addition to receiving three 3-pointers from Dick and Matt Koble to grab a 22-14 lead after the first quarter. Dick and Koble combined for 15 points during the first eight minutes of Saturday’s contest. A 7-0 run by Central to start the second quarter drew the hosts within a point at 22-21 before Warrior coach Gary Goshert called a time out with 5:44 left in the quarter to try and stem the tide. After holding a three point lead for most of the last part of the period, the Warriors advantage was cut to 34-33 at halftime as Central converted a lay-up late in the period. Chris Conkling of Wawasee converted a three-point play midway through the third quarter to

Caldwell. He added that it's a neat accomplishment that all of the squad's seniors qualified for state since some of them have been swimming together for quite a few years. Wawasee qualified four individuals for the state meet during the first event of Saturday's sectional finals at Warsaw as the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Aaron Dial and seniors Eric Hood, Scott Rozow and Skip Winnebald placed second in the race with a school record time of 1:42.32. The Warriors will also be represented by Winnebald in the 50 yd. freestyle event at the state finals in Indianapolis. Winnebald captured a third place at the sectional in the 50 free with a time of 22.22. In addition to •sending seven swimmers to the state meet. Wawasee will also be represented by the senior diving combination of David Keener and Dave Neterer. Keener, who finished' third in one-meter diving at the state meet last year, captured the sectional championship on Saturday as he amassed a score of 452.30 in the diving finals to shatter his own school record for the event. Neterer compiled a total of 396.15 points to place second in the sectional diving competition final field of 14 and will be making his first trip to the state finals on Friday and Saturday.

give the Warriors their biggest lead of the period at 46-41 before two baskets by Central's Freddie Williams and one by teammate Ron Krause helped the Blue Blazers draw to within two (51-49) at the conclusion of the third period of play. After a Central basket knotted the game at 51-51 early into the fourth quarter, the Warriors went on a 16-6 tear (led by Dick's nine points) to gain their .largest lead of the game at 67-57 with about three and a half minutes left in the game From there, it was free throw shooting time as Central was forced to foul and Wawasee was able to hit eight free throws down the stretch to ice the 77-69 victory. "I feel really good about this win and the players sucked it up when it got physical and tough in the second half and they maintained their poise, " stated Goshert following the contest that saw the host Blue Blazers use a rough brand of play to try and throw the W’arriors 'off their game. "I thought that we shored some things up at halftime (like getting on the boards and playing better defensive position) and we executed very well on offense in the game's last six minutes." added Goshert. Central head coach Dennis Nowicki said that his team played hard but that poor defense hurt them. "We were out of position all night long on defense which forced us to foul and put them at the line and they killed us from there." Nowicki said "Dick had one heck of a game for them and they're an excellent coached team that plays intelligently, executes well and uses their assets very well,” insisted Nowicki.

"Dave (Keener) came back really strong in the afternoon finals after hitting his hand during the morning session and Dave (Neterer) turned in solid scores and is a very talented diver even though a lot of people don't know about him because he’s been overshadowed by Keener’s performances throughout the year,” commented Rex Rymers, diving coach for Wawasee. The other individual sectional champion for Wawasee. in addition to Keener, was senior Matt Fryback who captured the final of the 100 yd. butterfly event on Saturday with a time of 54.57. Fryback, who has been to the state meet the past two seasons, also qualified for state in the 200 yd. individual medley after turning in a time of 2:04.20 at the sectional which was good enough for a third place. Junior Scott Berkey was second in the 500 yd. freestyle final at the sectional with a school record time of 4:58.96 and he will be making his first trip to the state finals later this week. The last race of the sectional finals on Saturday saw the 400 yd. freestyle relay team of Berkey, Fryback, Rozow and senior Brian Neff qualify for the state competition by finishing in second place with a time of 3:18.57. In addition to the state qualifying efforts at the sectional finals, other Warriors placing in the

Cogers prepare to conclude regular season against Bremen

By SCOTf DAVIDSON Sports Writer

With just one regular season game remaining until the start of sectional play at Triton, Wawasee boys’ basketball coach Gary Goshert is hoping to end the season with a victory at home on Friday evening as his Warriors will face conference foe Bremen to conclude the regular season. Wawasee, now 8-11 after last Saturday's win over Elkhart Central, is looking to build on last week’s performance according to Goshert. “I feel that we re making strides and accomplishing some things and on Friday night we just have to play a solid game at both ends of the court in order to be successful.” said the Warrior boss He added that Friday's contest is also important because it will be the last time that the seven senior members of the team will play at home (there will be a senior recognition night ceremony between the junior varsity and varsity games on Friday night for the senior members and their parents of Wawasee’s winter sports teams). The Bremen Lions, under the direction of second year coach Larry Lael, are 13-5 (going into a contest last night at. Argos) and are coming off of victories last weekend over North Wood (65-55 on Friday) and Culver (88-65). Their encounter at Wawasee on Friday evening will be the last NLC (Northern Lakes Conference) game ever for the Lions and Lael is hoping that fact will give his team a little added incentive “This will be the last time that we play as a membei of the NLC and our conference record is 3-3 as is Wawasee s so I think that the kids should have a little more to motivate them,” stated Lael

finals included Todd Miller (12th in the 200 medley) and Thad Dußois (11th in the 50 and 100 free). “We re preparing this week to swim even faster at the state meet than we did at sectional and I think that since five of our guys (Fryback, Keener, Rozow, Neff and Winnebald) have been to the state meet in previous years they know what it’s going to be like and that’s an advantage for all of the guys that are going to Indy,” remarked Caldwell. The seedings for the state finals show Keener as the highest seeded Warrior as he is seeded seventh for the one-meter diving event while teammate Neterer is seeded 23rd. Other seedings* for the Wawasee state qualifiers are as follows: Fryback (11th in the 100 butterfly and 25th in the 200 IM), Winnebald (12th in the 50 freestyle) Berkey (25th in the 500 freestyle), the team of Dial, Hood, Rozow and Winnebald < 13th in the 200 medley relay) and the foursome of Berkey, Fryback, Rozow and Neff (11th in the 400 freestyle relay). The State Meet begins on Friday with the swimming preliminaries getting underway at 6 p.m. at the IU Natatorium. Diving preliminaries are set for 9 a m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday with the finals in all events beginning at2:3op.m.

Williams adding 18 and reserve Schmille Barhams turning in a fine effort off the bench with 19 points. The Wawasee junior varsity squad dropped a tough 41-39 contest to the Central JV team to fall to 9-10 on the season The Warriors, after falling behind 20-15 at halftime, outscored the hosts 10-2 to grab a 25-22 lead going into the fourth quarter. From there, the game's final period>was nip and tuck as the Blue Blazers outscored the Warriors 19-14 to come away with the two point

whose club will compete in the NSC (Northern States Conference) next season. "Bremen always has been a difficult opponent for us and I think that Friday's game will be no different. They have experience back from last year's team that won the Plymouth Sec tional and their record proves that they’re a good club,” com mented Goshert. The probable starting line-up for the Lions on Friday will consist of 5’10” senior Perry Mann and 5’9” junior Matt Weston at the guards, 6'4” junior Jon Feldman in the pivot and s'lo' senior Casey Miller and 6'o" senior Tim Lawmaster at the for ward positions. The three players off of the Bremen bench (the squad only carries eight varsity players) are Chris Devine. Richard Moren and Chad Bailey The Lions present a balanced offensive attack with Feldman leading the squad with a 12.7 points-per-game average while teammates Mann (11.7 ppg> Weston <9.9 ppg), Lawmaster (8.7 ppg) and Devine (8 ppg) all add ample support to the Bremen offense. “We have good balance and we stress taking good shots on offense," said Lael. “Wawasee’s shown improve ment throughout the year and Gary’s got tHeFn playing very well right now and we’ll have to be clicking on all four cylinders on Friday night to have a chance,” insisted Lael He added that his squadj-which is only giv ing up an average of 55 points-per-game, will have to concern trate on their defensive reboun ding in Friday's match-up with the Warriors. “We play good defense out on the floor for the most part but we're not very big
