By SCOTT DAVIDSON And I MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writers
"I'm not disappointed with our effort because we did a lot of positive things and this is the kind of situation that you learn from," stated Gary Goshert, Wawasee boys’ basketball coach, after seeing guard Scott Smith of TlpEanoe Valley score his only ket of the night on a lay-up with just one second remaining in overtime to send the visiting Warriors to a 68-66 setback on Saturday evening. Wawasee, now 7-11 on the season, had tied the game at 66-66 with just eight seconds left in the game before Smith was able to take the ensuing inbounds pass and drive the length of the court for the game winning field goal. With a win over North Wood (67-52) last Friday and a tough loss (68-66 in overtime) at Tippecanoe Valley on Saturday evening, the Wawasee boys' basketball team has a 7-11 mark with just two regular season contests remaining before sectional time starts on Wednesday, March 1. The Warriors last road game of the 1988-89 regular season will occur this Saturday when they will travel to North Side Gym in Elkhart to face the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers. Elkhart Central, under the tutelage of second year coach Dennis Nowicki, is currently 5-12 on the season heading into a Friday night encounter with crosstown rival Elkhart Memorial. "Central is a team that plays very hard and they always play good defense," commented Warrior head coach Gary Goshert. Nowicki, whose squad propped a 78-68 decision to South Bend

the Vikings to 12-5 on the year, offset a fine fourth quarter performance by the Warriors that enabled them to tie the contest at 62-62 at the end of regulation play "We had a good fourth quarter where we were able to put together some good defensive series that got us back into the game,” said Goshert. The Warriors, trailing 51-42 after the third quarter, outscored the host Vikings 20-11 in the game's final quarter to send it into the overtime session. Goshert stated that his squad was hurt in the first half by the Viking's offensive rebounding as well as by their own turnovers as they dropped behind 14-11 at the end of the first period and 33-29 at halftime. The Warriors were able to stay close in the first half on the strength of the outside shooting of senior Matt Dick who rifled in four three-point shots to

"Wawasee beat us last year down at their place and they will be a very tough opponent for us on Nowicki said. ‘ The probable starting line-up for the Blue Blazers when they square off with Wawasee on Saturday evening will include 5’10” Freddie Williams, 6’l” Ron Krause, 6'l” Jeff Rodino, 6’o” J.R. Shelt and 5’10” Brad McConnell. Elkhart Central's offense is paced by the 14 points-per-game average of Williams while Krause is contributing about 11 points-per-game for Nowicki's club. “I think that Central is a much improved dub from last season and they will play us very physical which they always do,” stated Goshert. He added that the Central offense also has a good offensive player (Williams) who can score quite a few points when he's on his game. Nowicki said that one of the keys for his club versus Wawasee

keep his squad within striking distance. The host Vikings outscored Wawasee 18-13 during the third quarter of play to take a 51-42 advantage before the Warriors strong fourth quarter, keyed by their work on the defensive end of the floor, enabled them to knot the score at 62-62 at the end of regulation play before Smith’s heroics pulled the game out for Tippecanoe Valley. "The team played so hard and fought back in the fourth quarter and the key to our effort in the fourth quarter was that we worked and communicated well on defense,” stated Goshert. He added that the team also received fine efforts off of the bench from Jeff Boyer, Jeff Carey, Tim Lilly and Dan Wuthrich. From a team standpoint on Saturday evening, Wawasee hit on 24-54 ( 44%) field goals including six three-point shots
will be to play good, enthusiastic defense for four quarters. "We will also have to be patient on offense and make sure that we take care of the ball and don’t allow them to score some easy baskets off of our mistakes,” emphasized Nowicki. With just Saturday's game and then a home finale next Friday (Feb. 24) against Bremen left before the start of the Triton Sectional, Goshert remarked that his squad still must concentrate on their defense. “The defensive end of the court is so important to your success in basketball that I think that if we are able to play good defense these last two games it will really stabilize our team heading into the sectional," concluded Goshert. The action at North Side Gym on Saturday night between the visiting Warriors and the host Blue Blazers will get underway at 6:15 p.m. when the opposing junior varsity squads will square off. The tip-off for the varsity match-up on Saturday will occur at approximately 8 p.m.

while the Vikings connected on 18-45 (40%) from the floor including four three-point baskets The difference in the statistics, and in the game's final outcome, was evident at the free throw line where Wawasee made 12-19 (63%) attempts while Tippecanoe Valley converted on 28-40 ( 70%). The Warriors came away with a slim 36-35 rebounding advantage and committed 12 turnovers while the hosts totaled 10 miscues. Dick led the Warrior offense with a game and career high»27 points, which included a six of seven performance from threepoint range. Chris Conkling tallied nine points while teammate Boyer contributed eight points. Pete Bonner and Boyer led the Wawasee effort on the boards as each gathered in six caroms. Dion Anglin led Tippecanoe Valley on Saturday with 21 points, including three from beyond the three-point stripe, while teammates Steve Dunnuck and Craven Lynn both reached double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively. The Wawasee junior varsity dropped a 50-41 decision to the Viking JV squad to fall to the .500 mark on the year at 9-9. Keith Hardy led the Warrior JV offense with 12 points while teammate Dennis Garland chipped in with 11 points. Wawasee will attempt to rebound from Saturday’s tough loss as they take to the road this Saturday evening to face Elkhart Central at North Side Gym with the junior varsity game beginning the action with a 6:15 p.m. tipoff time. "We have to just build on the positives from the Tippe Valley game the rest of the season (against Central and at home on Feb. 24 versus Bremen) and into the sectional in two weeks," concluded Goshert. Win over North Wood The Warriors beat a scrappy North Wood Panthers team on Friday, Feb. 10, for their seventh win of the season. Wawasee’s cagers led most of the way but couldn't put their opponents away until a fourth quarter surge paved the way for a 67-52 victory. "I thought it was a total team effort out there,” commented Goshert. "We had people coming

off the bench and contributing " Dick scored the Warriors’ first seven points as Wawasee exploded to a 9-2 lead at 4:02 of the first quarter. The Panthers started climbing back into the contest, however, and chopped the lead to 13-9 in the waning minutes. Carey culminated another Wawasee run with a pair of free throws and the score stood at 19-12, with five seconds left in the quarter But North Wood’s Randy Cripe sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to narrow the sdore to 19-15.}, The Panthers’ rally continued in the second quarter and they gained the lead, briefly, before a Dick jumper put Wawasee back on top for good at 24-23. The Warriors continued to pull away and the lead jumped to 38-28 when Matt Koble threaded through the North Wood defense for a layup in the final seconds of the first half. The Panthers still refused to give in and edged their way closer. The third quarter ended with Wawasee on top 47-41. The Warriors pushed the lead back to 10 points but North Wood cut it down to 51-45 on a pair of free throws by Kevin Moore, with about six minutes left in the game. Wawasee’s cagers were finally able to put the nail in the coffin in the following minutes. Bonner scored on the inside, to make it 53-45. Koble followed with a fastbreak bucket, and center Rob Huey made it 57-45 with a nice post move. Goshert said good defensive stops led to his team's fine fourth quarter performance. Also helpful, was the inside game, which allowed Wawasee’s cagers to get short shots at the basket. “Those are pretty good percentage shots when you get in that close,” Goshert said. Dick ended up as Wawasee’s high scorer, with 15 points. Conkling added 14 and Huey was good for 11 points. Brett Gessinger led the losers with 15 points while teammate Shane Weldy added 14. In Junior Varsity action the Warriors came away with a 47-39 victory over North Wood to raise their season mark to 9-8. Hardy led the Wawasee JV attack with 14 points while Garland added 10 and Jason Mickley chipped in with seven points.
