Wayne placed fourth with 65 points and Bishop Dwenger scored 60>z points en route to its fifth-place finish. Jones and Ponciroli have a legitimate shot at qualifying for state competition, according to coach Dave VanLue. Regional champions only have to win one match at semi-state in order to advance. "Shawn and Garrett both have a very good chance to go on,” VanLue said With his three decisions at Fort Wayne, Ponciroli's season record stands at an impressive 32-2. This year’s regional championship was the second straight for the powerful 18-year-old. “When he decides he wants to wrestle, then he dominates people,” VanLue said. Jones compiled a 29-4-1 mark over the season and Mangas' record stands at 25-5. This will be Jones' first encounter at the semi-state level but he’s hoping his inexperience won’t count against him. “I'm hoping to make it out to state,” Jones said. Mangas has a considerably tougher task ahead of him.

Even with the top four wrestlers in each division advancing, the competition for those slots will be intense. “Hopefully, I can win my first one,” Mangas said. “Winning my second will be tough.” Even with Wawasee’s trio of 18-year-old seniors advancing to the semi-state level, there were some disappointments for the Warriors at the regional. Jones’ brother, Chad, was one of the best wrestlers for the team during the season, but he didn’t have a good day at Fort Wayne. “I was disappointed,” VanLue said. “I really thought that Chad Jones would have come out of there.” Other team shortcomings can be chalked up to inexperience and VanLue summarizes the regional by saying it “wasn’t too disappointing a dav.” Regional Results Ist-FW Northrop, 126' 2 ; 2nd-FW Harding. 94; 3rdCarroll, 66; 4th-FW Wayne, 65; sth-Bishop Dwenger, 60 1 2 ; 6th-Wawasee, 53.

Perry's record catch lives on after 56 years
When George Perry caught a 22-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass more than 56 years ago, no one really cared that much about bass. He had it weighed on certified scales, enabling him to win SSO in a magazine contest. Then he did what most fishermen would have done in 1932. He ate it. In these days of competitive fishing, high-tech equipment, and mass media, a record that surpasses Perry’s probably won’t get eaten. It will make the angler a millionaire. The legend of Perry’s bass has been in the minds of bass fishermen for more than half a century. Almost all of the fish that have come close have been surrounded with controversy. Here’s a brief history, compiled by Bassin’ Magazine: In August of 1984, Otis Broom of Barnesville, Ga., reportedly caught a bass that weighed 22 pounds, 3-ounces - three quarters of an ounce shy of Perry’s record. Broom is said to have caught the fish on a Jitterbug from a pond near Nubulon, Ga. When asked by state game agents to inspect the fish, Broom said he didn’t have the fish anymore - he and his brother ate it. It was never officially registered as a record of any kind. Hot Shot basketball winners On February 4 at 10:30 a.m., a ,“Hot Shot” basketball contest, sponsored by the Wawasee Kiwanis Club, was held in the Syracuse Junior High School gymnasium. All students from Milford, Syracuse, and North Webster schools who are in grades one through eight were welcome to enter. On June 23, 1973, Dave Zimerlee of Claremount, Calif., pulled a 20-pound, 15-ounce largemouth from a San Diego reservoir. There were charges that Zimerlee found the fish floating in Lake Miramar, but it was finally recognized as the California state record. It is not listed in the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) record books, as Zimerlee apparently never applied for national recognition. On March 4, 1980, Californian Raymond Easley hauled in a 21-pound, 3.32-ounce largemouth. He caughUthe fish with 8-pound test line, dunking a crawdad in Lake Casitas, north of Los Angeles. The catch took over as the California record, the world line-class record and as the second largest bass officially recognized the IGFA. On March 14, 1988, Californian Sandy De Fresco, fishing in Lake Miramar, caught what might be claimed as the second largest bass ever recorded. It weighed 21 pounds, 10 ounces, but when taken to a taxidermist, it was found to have a 2-pound, 9-ounce diving weight in its stomach. Although some biologists speculated that the fish could have picked the weight up naturally, it was not qualified as a California record. In fact, it was disallowed as an IGFA line class record when DeFresco said she had to hand line the fish in because of a reel malfunction. The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame did decide to recognize the fish - at 19-1 - as a Adult basketball league begins playoffs Sturonjac, Thornburgs, Dana and Wawasee Boat all notched victories in the first round of the Wawasee Adult Basketball League’s post-season tournament Monday. Winners advance to this Monday’s second round. Jay Kaiser scored 19 points to lead Sturonjac to its 66-59 victory over Sylvan. Eric McDowell led the losers with a game-high 23 points. Thornburgs pulled out a 55-49 victory over National Cadd-Pro Inc. Norm Van Laningham paced the winners with 14 points while Randy Verberkmous scored 14 for NCPI. Shaun Beard scored 22 points for Dana in its 90-78 conquest of Pilcher’s. Dave Melching and Brent Messmore tossed in 22 points apiece in a losing cause. Wawasee Boat rounded out playoff action with a 66-60 win over Wawasee Nazarene. Bill Hutchinson scored 18 points for the winners while Jim Evans knocked in a game-high 22 points in a losing effort.

16-pound line class rod and reel record. Where will the next world record come from? Some say Texas, where the state record has fallen five times in the last eight years and now stands at 17 pounds, 10.7 ounces. Some say Florida, where rumors abound of a state electro-shocking operation that brought in (and released) a bass that weighed more than 25 pounds. Others think that the growing season in Georgia is just right to produce another world record. Os course, if the conditions are just right in Georgia, why not Alabama or Mississippi. And many eyes turn west to California, where Florida transplants continue to grow and grow. Wherever, if the person who catches it has entered Bassin' Magazine’s Big’ Bass World Championship (BBWC) program, he’ll win a million dollars from the publication. To receive an official entry form, pick up a copy of Bassin or Popular Lures Magazine at your nearest newsstand, or write BBWC, P.O. Box 697201, Tulsa, Okla. 74169-7201.
