Wrestlers win sectional championship

I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer Coach Dave VanLue thought his Wawasee Warriors wrestling team could bring home a sec--tional championship trophy from Kendallville but he never suspected it would come so easy. Wawasee’s grapplers'steamrolled the competition at the East Noble sectional Saturday and finished 59 points ahead of second-place West Noble. “I thought it would be closer than that,” VanLue said. “We beat a couple of No. 1 seeds from West Noble that really distanced us from them.” The top two grapplers in each

Cantu normally wrestles at the 160-pound level but was a last-minute replacement at 171 pounds. “It was a last-minute thing and I couldn’t have asked any more from him,” VanLue said. She went through her entire routine without falling off, which is a rarity even at the varsity level. The Warriors were scheduled to meet Westview on Monday but the meet had to be cancelled because Westview dropped its gymnastics program. DeKalb is next on the list for Wawasee, with a 6:30 p.m. starting time tomorrow (Tuesday).

VanLue said his team benefited from playing in a tougher league than its sectional opponents. He said Wawasee’s grapplers were in better condition because of it. “A lot of the matches that were close for us, we’d go into the third period and dominate because we were in better shape.” VapEpe said. Along with the five champions, Wawasee’s regional contingent consists of Jason Douglas (103-pound), Cuong Reed (130-pound), Tom Mangas (140-pound) and Buster Clevinger (145-pound). '

Lady eagers drop 17th straight

The Wawasee Lady Warriors wrapped up the 1988-89 gftTs basketball season by dropping their 17th consecutive game in a 46-33 loss to West Noble Saturday. In fhursday hoop action Wawasee’s girls took a 66-21 beating at Bremen. The last two games of the season could be seen as representative of the season as a whole. The hard-luck eagers spent the year either being blown out by superior talent or - coming up short in games they had a shot at winning. Saturday’s home contest was one of those games that they were competitive in. The Lady Warriors were down just 13-12 after one quarter but the deficit grew to seven points (25-18) at the half and to 10 points (36-26) with three quarters completed. The Chargers’ press played havoc with Wawasee’s attack. West Noble’s girls flooded the defensive side of the court on the inbounds plays and made it tough for Wawasee to break the pressure up the middle. “Usually, they’re not that congested in the middle but they knew we would go into the middle,” said Warriors coach Jim Hite. Senior center Bobi Stookey kept the Lady Warriors close early with 13 first-half points. She ended up with 17 points for the game. Lora Hollar pulled in nine rebounds to fead Wawasee and Stookey was good for seven. Lady Chargers guard Jennie Tobey stole the show, however. The 5-foot-7 inch senior controlled the tempo of the game with her ball-handling and offensive skills. She scored 19 points and played harassing defense for the 12-5 West Noble squad. West Noble coach Dave Brockett said Tobey has been playing that way all season for his team and that she is one of the best players in the area. Brockett’s team also benefited from the play of the Jackson triplets. Each one of these sophomore sisters starts for the team and each has her own identity on the court. Jenny scores more than eight points a game. Lori averages about seven points and six assists per game. Emily is good for about six points a game and plays outstanding man-on-man defense. “All three do different things but they all contribute.” Brockett said.

Loss At Bremen In their loss against the Bremen Lady Lions the Lady Warriors ran up against an “extremely accurate” shooting team, according to coach Hite. Bremen's girls had the edge in quickness, as well. The Lady Lions exploded to a 21-5 first quarter lead and never looked back. “They weren't overly big but they were fast,” Hite said. “They

Sectionals Next There won’t be much rest for the Wawasee weary before sectionals. The Lady Warriors are scheduled to meet the Triton Lady Trojans at 6:30p.m., Thursday in the Warsaw sectional. Wawasee’s girls can consider themselves fortunate that they got a favorable draw. They could have had a first-rounder with No. 1 ranked Warsaw or 14-4 Tippecanoe Valley. Instead, they will have a matchup with the 4-14 Lady Trojans “It puts us in the hunt for a win, Hite said of the draw. “Either of the other two would have been a long struggle uphill. This is still a struggle but it’s one we can get to the top of.” All in all. Hite did see some positive aspects to the Lady Warriors’ season. There was improvement in play and attitude, even though the win-loss record didn't reflect it. “There’s a growth in the kids and the coaching staff.” Hite said.
