The team posted an overall season record of 8-6, with a mark of 4-3 within the Northern Lakes Conference Warriors coach Dave VanLue knew his grapplers had their hands full with the 13-7 Rockies but he hoped they could make a good match of it. ® “I thought we would be a little closer then we were,” VanLue said. Chad Jones, Tom Mangas, Tony Hosteter and Garrett Ponciroli were the only Warriors to emerge from the match with victories. Jones scored a 10-7 victory over Jason Rudd in the 130-pound class while Mangas came away with a 6-2 decision over Glenn Weidner in the 140-pound division. Hosteter notched the Warriors’ first pin victory when he trapped Dennis Stiles at 1:35 of the 152-pound match. Ponciroli toyed with Willie Fish before pinning him at 3:07 of the 189-pound contest. The Wawasee Lady Warriors fell victim to a fine team and one of the finest girl prep players in the state Saturday when they dropped a 74-37 decision at Elkhart Memorial. Erica Jackson put on a one-woman show, scoring 34 points for the winners. The 1-13 Warriors scored on their first two possessions of the game but they still found themselves down 9-4, thanks to the sharpshooting of Jackson. The 5-foot-9 inch senior put on a shooting exhibition early in the game by nailing three 3-ppinters in a row

recover. VanLue said Ponciroli looked at the match as a chance to practice. “It was an opportunity for him to work ’on his takedowns,” VanLue said. Overall, it was the Rockies that dominated the match, however. Plymouth’s boys won eight matches, including four pins and one technical fall. One match ended in a draw. Overall, VanLue feels that the season was a satisfactory, one. There were some tough losses along the way but he says the team has been steadily improving. “Our ultimate goal is sectional time and I think we’ll be ready for that,” VanLue said. Wawasee’s wrestlers will have to concentrate on Saturday’s NLC tournament before they can concern themselves with their Jan. 28 sectional. Grapplers from all the conference schools will converge on Goshen High School for mat action at 9 a.m. Four Wawasee grapplers notched victories in the junior varsity’s 18-12 victory over the Rockies. This group of Warrior winners consisted of Chris Requejo in the 103-pound class, Matt Stump in the 119-pound class, Brian Taylor in the 125-pound class and Junior Cantu in the 145-pound class.
“It was unbelievable,” Warrior coach Jim Hite said. “That girl could shoot from anywhere.” Jackson used a combination of smooth inside and outside play to lead Memorial’s Crimson Chargers to the convincing victory. Angie Kaufman provided one of the bright spots for the Lady Warriors by scoring a team-high seven points. She was complemented in her efforts by teammate Kriss Eisenhour, who chipped in With six points. In Thursday, Jan. 12, action the Lady Warriors lost to Tippecanoe Valley 57-25. a road game against the Plymouth Lady Rockies. Plymouth’s girls are at .500 for the season with a record of 7-7. "These games are important if for no other reason than we're finally playing teams that aren't ranked." Hitesaid. In junior varsity action the Lady Warriors lost a close 31-27 decision to Elkhart Memorial after losing to Tippecanoe Valley 34-15 earlier in the week Stephanie Skelton led Wawasee with an eight-point effort in the Memorial game. Skelton and Kerri Speicher scored four points apiece to tie for team scoring honors in the Tippecanoe Valley contest. The JV girls’ record now stands at 2-12.

Soccer enthusiasts trying to establish high school soccer
By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
Young soccer enthusiasts in the Lakeland area will get a chance to play the game at the high school level if the Friends of Wawasee Soccer Steering Committee has its way. The organization is trying to get soccer established as a club sport at Wawasee High School so the area’s teen-aged ‘Poles’ can finally have an opportunity to play the sport after the eighth .grade. The Lakeland Youth Center accommodates more than 200 boys and girls in its soccer program each year but the participants are handed their walking papers when they hit high school age. Children are only allowed to stay in the program from the second grade through the eighth grade. “We’ve got a real active, strong program at the Lakeland Youth Center and the basic question is where do the kids go to play soccer after the eighth grade,” said Ken Yoder, the committee’s acting chairman. Wawasee Athletic Director Hal Traviolia said people have come up with the idea of establishing the sport before but it may have better support now than it did * previously.. "We've had some interest expressed before but there's never been the student interest as at the present time,” he said. Wawasee High School officials are giving their students a chance to show just how interested they are in establishing the sport. Interested students can commit themselves to the prospective club by signing a survey form in home room this morning (Wednesday). "When that's done we’ll get an idea of what direction to go.” Yoder said. Yoder said the school has been cooperative with the committee. He worried that soccer may have been perceived as a threat to other, sports but school officials have done nothing but help the movement. “The high school has been very supportive of us,” Yoder said. "Ned Speicher (principal and Donn Kesler (vice principal) have been very helpful to us.” Committee members hope the sport can gain varsity status in

Gymnasts open season without an opponent
By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer .
The lights were on but West Noble was home. In the opening meet of the gymnastics season last night. Wawasee’s defending sectional champions had tp go through their routines without the benefit of a serious opponent. West Noble’s gymnasts ranks were decimated by illness and only two of their girls were well enough to make the trip to Wawasee High School. So the meet was pretty much between the Warriors and the judges. Coach Tracy Sumpter said her girls did pretty well for an opening meet. She would like to see her team score in the 90s and it finished just a bit shy of that goal at 89.70. The absence of an opponent doesn't necessarily affect a • gymnast’s performance.
