Improved Warriors defeat Raiders
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
An 8-0 start during the game’s first two minutes and a 25»point first quarter outburst wers the needed ingredients for a victory as the Wawasee boys’ basketball team capitalized on their fast start Friday night to defeat visiting conference foe Northridge 63-56. The win raised the Warriors season mark to 5-6 (2-2 in the NLC). "Our offense in the first half was pretty good and I think that we’re getting closer to where we want to be as a team," commented Warrior mentor Gary Goshert after the squad's third win in a row. Wawasee jumped out to a 25-13 advantage after the first quarter as Matt Dick fired in one of his three 3-point bombs during the opening stanza and senior classmate Matt Koble came off the bench to add five points including one “home run" from beyond the 19’9" three point stripe. The second quarter saw Dick continue his hot hand for the Warriors as he connected for eight more of his team high 18 points, including two more 3-point bombs. The visiting Raiders were able to get as, close as seven points on a couple of occasions (32-25 and 34-27) in the second quarter but the Warriors went to the locker room with a 41-33 lead at halftime. Senior center Rob Huey went to work for the hosts in the third period of action as he went inside of the smaller Raiders to rack up six of his 15 points on the game "This was really the first time that Rob hasn’t gotten into foul trouble and we were able to keep him in the game more and it helped." stated Goshert. The Warrior lead was cut to a four point margin at 49-45 after

‘“We started out slow but then our defensive pressure picked up and we were able to execute better with our halfcourt offense,” remarked Roger Brady, Wawasee boys' freshmen basketball coach, after his squad, defeated visiting Fairfield 36-32 last night to up their season mark to 7-6 Thanh Tran led the Warrior attack with 13 points while teammate Arie Dewees chipped in with eight markers The host Warriors connected on just 6-11 from the free thrmn’ line last night but the visiting ralcons had even more problems, hitting just 9-22 from the charity stripe No field goal statistics from the contest were available. “In addition to our better defense and better offensive execution, we also did a lot better job with our rebounding,” emphasized Bradv
the third period of play as Northridge guard Jeremy Lord hit for eight of his game high 25 points during the third stanza, including two of his game high five 3-pointers. “We were a little impatient on offense in the second period but we did a better job in the third quarter but we missed a lot of easy bunnies,” commented Goshert. During the fourth quarter of action, the host Warriors saw their lead dwindle to 51-49 with, just under five minutes to go in the contest. "We had our chance at 51-49 but we just didn’t get the job done." commented Northridge boss Mike Lord who watched his team fall to 3-7 on the year with another tough loss. "We just didn’t execute on defense in the first half and Wawasee was able to do whatever they wanted to on offense," added Lord. After seeing their lead cut to two at 51-49. the host Warriors connected on 10 free throws and one field goal (a Pete Bonner basket) down the stretch to cpme away with the hard-fought 63-56 victory. “Wawasee played an excellent ball game and they are vastly improved over the first of the season and they're playing with a lot of confidence.” said Lord, adding that his squad keeps getting hurt by the fact that they have to try and keep coming from behind in their losses. "We had good support from our bench tonight (Tim Lilly and Jeff Carey) and we were also able to get Koble some more playing time,” commented Goshert. “You have to give Northridge credit though for digging in and getting back in the game in the second half the way they did.' added Goshert. For the game. Dick led the Warriors with 18 markers (including three 3-pointers), while Huey totaled 15 points to go with six rebounds. Bonner and
The freshman eagers saw their season mark fall to .500 at 6-6 as they dropped a 51-33 decision to the Concord Minutemen last Thursday on their home floor “We were totally outhustled and after the game was tied at 4-4 early in the contest, it was over.” commented a disgusted Brady after the loss He added that his team probably played their worst transition game of the year and that they also made bad decisions throughout the game host Warriors fell behind 18-8 after the first quarter and things didn't get any better for them as Coneord J.ed 30-14 at the half, 42-26 at the conclusion of the third period and 51-33 as the final buzzer ended the contest. “We played bad defense overall and we didn’t block out on the boards and Concord was able to score practically all of their points within very close range of the basket,” commented Brady. Wawasee was led by Tran who tallied 15 points for the hosts, while teammate Mason Robbins
Koble each added seven points for Wawasee while teammate Chris Conkling chipped in with six points to go with a team high eight rebounds. From a team standpoint last Friday. Wawasee connected on 20-44 (45%) from the field while the visiting Raiders hit 21-47 (44%). The difference for the Warriors was at the charity stripe as the hosts converted on 19-25 (76%) free throws while Northridge hit on 9-13 (69%). Northridge was able to grab 31 total rebounds to 24 for the Warriors while the Raiders committed 16 turnovers while Wawasee had 13. The Wawasee junior varsity squad saw its record dip to 6-5 on the season as they dropped a 54-43 decision to an undefeated Northridge JV team. The JV squad trailed 10-9 and 19-17 at the first and second quarter breaks before tying the game at 31 at the conclusion of the third period. The visiting JV squad from Northridge outscored the Warriors 23-12 in the final stanza to record their tenth consecutive victory of the season. Sophomore Keith Hardy led the Warrior eagers with a game high 22 points while teammate Dennis Garland chipped in eight markers. ■Wawasee was scheduled to take to the road to face the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings on Saturday in Mentone but bad weather forced the game to be rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11. The 5-6 Warriors will put their three game winning streak on the line this Friday (Jan. 20) when they travel north to face NLC opponent Goshen (8-3 overall and 2-1 in the NLC) with the JV contest scheduled to begin play at 6:15 p.m. This Saturday evening (Jan. 21) will find Wawasee serving as hosts to the Westview Warriors with the JV action tipping off the evening of "Hoosier Hysteria" with a 6:15 p.m. start.
chipped in with six points. The host Warriors continued their cold shooting from the field as they hit on just 14-39 shots for 36% while the visiting Minutemen connected on 24-44 field goals for 55%. Neither squad was very proficient from the charity stripe as Wawasee hit 5-10 (50%) while Concord tallied just 3-13 (23%). The freshmen Warriors will be at home again tomorrow evening with a 6:30 pm contest on tap versus the Goshen Redskins “Goshen is probably the second best team in our conference and we ll have to put forth a fantastic effort to stick with them for four quarters,” said Brady He added that the Redskins have already defeated Concord in addition to losing an overtime contest to a very good Warsaw freshmen squad. Wawasee will continue its current five game home stand with a match-up next Tuesday evening versus Elkhart Central that will tip-off at 6:30p.m.

Cagers to put win streak on line this weekend
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
With a three game winning streak and a season mark that > now stands at 5-6 after last Friday’s win over Northridge, Wawasee boys' basketball coach Gary Goshert must prepare his squad to face two very different opponents this upcoming weekend. This Friday night the Warriors will travel to Goshen to face a Redskin squad that is 8-3 on the year The Redskins, under the direction of fourth year coach Mike Sorrell, are a very balanced team on the offensive end of the floor and a team that puts an emphasis on defense, according to Sorrell. "We re pretty good (consistent) on the defensive end of the floor and we like to hold our opponents scoring down because the less points they score the less it takes for you to win a ball game,” remarked Sorrell. The three setbacks for the Redskins this season have been to Warsaw (38-35), Fairfield (46-42) and to Elkhart Memorial (49-43) in overtime last Saturday. The 49 points that Goshen surrendered in the overtime game with Memorial last weekend was the highest point total that they have given up in their 11 contests. The Redskins have had eight different players assume starting roles thus far during the season and all of them are sure to see plenty of action on Friday against their visiting Warriors. Key players tor the Redskins are seniors Thad Holden, Dan Welz, Jered Prough, Bob Rossi, Jeff Uptgraft, David Lee and Eric Wentz and junior Mitch Herschberger. “Against Wawasee we’ll have to play a complete game and it will be important on offense for us to execute well and to be able to adjust to and attack the various defenses that they’ll play,” stated Sorrell. He added that his team is taught good shot selection on the offensive end even if it takes quite a bit of time on the clock or a lot of passes to get the shot that they want On Saturday night, beginning with the junior varsity contest at 6:15 pm, the host Warriors will face a different style of attack as the 10-4 uptempo band of Westview Warriors will provide the opposition for Goshert andjjis troops Westview mentor Gerald Eash, who assumed the head coaching duties for the team last month when Troy Neely stepped down due to health reasons, has led the Warriors to a 4-1 mark during his reign “The transition (from one coach to another > has gone pretty
smoothly for us due to the fact that we haven't changed a lot, we're still basically doing the same things on offense and defense,” stated Eash, who had previously served as Westview's head coach before Neely's arrival. Eash commented that his team likes to run and play uptempo on offense while pressing on defense. "We're expecting a track meet with Wawasee on Saturday and I think that the team that is able to hold down their turnovers will be successful." remarked Eash. He added that his squad must also be able to slow Wawasee's offensive attack down while also doing a good job of rebounding against the taller host Warriors. The probable starting lineup for Westview will be 6’o' Ryan Yoder and Ryan Eash at the guards, 6’3” Troy Trittipo in the middle and 6'2" Jeremy Bachman and 6’l” Pat Troyer at the forward slots. Yoder and Bachman are leading the offensive output for Coach Eash as each are averaging around 17.5 points-per-game. When looking at this weekend’s two very different styles of teams that his Warriors must go up against, Goshert commented, "Both teams (Goshen and Westview) are very successful with their own style and I look at this as a challenge for our team." Goshert added that he feels that Sturonjac defeats Pilcher's Worth Packer connected for 21 points on Monday night to help Sturonjac raise its record to 7-2 with a 78-71 victory over Pilcher’s in Wawasee Adult League basketball action. Dave Melching bombed in 30 points for the Pilcher’s squad, now also 7-2. Shawn Bontrager tallied 21 points in other play on Monday to help Dana ’ defeat Augsburger’s/Sunbeam/Seyferts 86-64 Al Schlagenhauf totaled 18 markers in a losing effort. Dana is now 7-1 while Augsburger’s/Sunbeam/Seyferts is now 5-4 Chris Fisher netted 22 pdlnts to help PAC score a 74-61 victory over Wawasee Nazarene in other game action on Monday. Jim Evans poured in 23 points in a losing cause PAC now stands at 4-5 while Wawasee Nazarene dropped to 1-8 r Wawasee Boat, behind the 28 point performance of Craig Cripe, defeated Thornburg’s 70-45 in other adult league play on Monday. Norm Vanlaningham scored 14 points in a losing cause for Thornburg's Wawasee Boat is now 3-6 on the season while Thornburg's is 2-7
his team is getting closer to the point where they can play whatever style that it takes during a game situation to be successful. "I think that even though we'll be facing two different style of opponents this weekend, we’ll definitely be well prepared to get after both of them and continue building on the positive things that we’ve been doing in our last few games," remarked Goshert. Goshert said that the members of his squad are really starting to feel confident with each other and that seven to eight players are now providing the team with positive contributions in game situations. “The key for us lately is that we’re functioning much better as a team and that’s what we have to continue to do,” concluded Goshert.

Wawasee Swim Club adopts 'Wakes' as team name
The Wawasee Swim Club has taken on a new name this season. They are known as the “Wawasee Wakes.” Karen Weaver is head coach for the team and Terri Davis serves as assistant coach. The club began its season during the month of October. 1988, with 50 members joining to form the team. During the past three months team members have had many opportunities to participate in area invitationals and scheduled dual meets. This gives swimmers a chance to compete
The Warriors also placed first in the two relay events as the 200 yd. medley relay foursome of Dial, Troy Feaster, Dußois and Keener were winners as were the 400 yd. freestyle relay team of Rozow, Winnebald, Fryback and Mike Mills. Caldwell stated that Dial’s winning performance in the 100 yd. backstroke race was the top effort of the evening versus the Redskins. In addition to Dial’s lifetime best time of 1:01.53, 16 other lifetime best times were registered by the Warriors last Thursday. The other 16 lifetime bests registered by the Warriors last Thursday included Neff (1:54.92) and Cory Willard (2:34.62) in the 200 yd. freestyle; Miller (2:22.58) and Dial (2:24.69) in the 200 yd. individual medley; Fryback (23.11), Rozow (23.46) and Dußois (24.13) in the 50 yd. freestyle and Feaster (1:26.99) in the 100 yd. butterfly. Wawasee will take to the pool again tomorrow evening as they travel to Concord to swim against the NLC foe Minutemen in a meet scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. "Concord is much like us in that they have some very good front line swimmers,” remarked Caldwell. He added that he feels that tomorrow’s meet will go right down to the wire with the margin of victory being no more than five points for whoever is able to come out on top. After facing the once beaten Concord squad tomorrow, the Warriors will return to their home pool on Monday (Jan. 23) to face Elkhart Memorial at 6:30 p.m. Wawasee will cap off a busy six days of action with a meet at Plymouth next Tuesday (Jan. 24) also beginning at 6:30 p.m. "Plymouth is a very solid team and we’ll have to use a strong line-up to defeat them,” concluded Caldwell.
against others in their own age group for individual times and team points. This season the team remains undefeated with “a 4-0 record. They have one remaining dual meet scheduled on January 21st against the Wanee Waves. With hopes of capturing this victory, the Wakes will be in the number one position at the conference meet.
