New to the community, Midge Allen says 'a happy place' is all she wants
By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer
Midge Allen, one might say, is a women of spirit and bravery. At age 41 she has behind her, five years of teaching. 13 years of motherhood, and most recently. 11 years out of the workforce. Allen came to North Webster in August of 1988 when her husband. Donald, took a job there. Originally from Ashley. Allen was not sure she wanted to begin working because her children, ages nine. 11, and 13 were in school. "But they came looking for me," she laughs. After attending services at the North Webster United Methodist Church, Allen became aware that their minister back home was friends with the local minister when he approached her asking if she would be interested in teaching at the church’s day care center. The position was to start in October.

The center, losing its director and a teacher, was in need of a qualified replacement and since Allen had the degree in elementary education, she was qualified. "I didn't take the job as director because

I only wanted to work part-time," she says. During the school year Allen began part-time work until she finally decided tb take the director's job. “I love being with the children and I have a super staff,” she says. “My job as director includes scheduling and talking with parents about any problems. But my main objective is to keep this a happy place.” Every morning, Monday through Friday, Allen faithfully opens the day care center at 6 a.m. Until around 8:30 a.m. when the rest of the staff comes in, Allen is usually assisted by one teacher in caring for the 15 or so children who come in. "We usually put the little ones down for a nap and feed the others breakfast,” she states. Throughout the day the children — there are approximately 72 — participate in learning activites, practice motor skills and even get to play outside twice a day. "We have children from ages two to 12,” she says. "About 18 of them are after-school kids and we provide the service of walking them from school to the center until their parents can pick them up.” Allen taught second graders in her hometown for five years before quitting to start a family. She says she is quickly adjusting to North Webster and adds that the nice part about the move is that she is closer to her eldest son, Michael, who is at the Vernon Manor, a home for handicapped children, in Wabash. "Michael is a special kid,” she says of him. Although her hobbies include sewing, counted cross-stitching and cooking, Allen says she does not have all the time for those things anymore. Entering back into the workforce after 11 years takes some kind of bravery and will-power. But for Allen, who began the center on a part-time basis, now working 45 to 50 hours each week, is just a part of life. ‘
