Lady eagers lose 11th straight as offense sputters

ißy MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer \ ")■ The Wawasee Lady Warriors basketball team saw its losing string stretched to 11 after a 48-22 loss to the Goshen Lady Redskins Monday. Wawasee’s girls found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being in the lead early in the game when Kristine Gibson nailed an outside jumper to make the score 2-0. The offense faltered after that, however, and the score stood at 13-3 at the end of the first quarter. “Defensively I thought we played very well tonight but offensively we can’t get on the other end and score,” said Lady Warriors coach Jim Hite. Wawasee made a run late in the second hal' and cut the lead to single digits when Bobi Stookey’s--free throw with 57 seconds left made the score 21-12. The comeback continued in a low-scoring third quarter when the Lady Warriors outscored their opponents 6-2 and trailed 27-18. The fourth quarter turned out to be a nightmare for Wawasee. as the Lady Redskins converted several steals into layups. The Lady Warriors could only score four points in the final stanza while Goshen’s girls exploded for 21. Bobi Stookey was Wawasee’s high scorer with six points while 5-foot-10 inch Crystal Hershberger paced Goshen with 13 points. Earlier in the week the girls played a Jan. 5 game that had more spectators than in any of -their previous nine games. The fans didn’t come to Wawasee’s

Road race, elements to challenge area runners

(By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer Runners in the Lakeland area will get a chance to conquer the elements as well as a 3.1 mile course Jan. 28, when the third annual Todd Realty Winter Road Race kicks off at 10 a.m. The race course stretches through gently rolling hills along the Maxwelton Golf Course and 'past Lake Syracuse. Fair weather runners may not have the grit it takes to run the five kilometers in frigid winter weather. “Just the die-hacd runners will show up," said race organizer Tony Clouse. The race is being run in con junction with the 1989 Tenth Annual Syracuse-Wawasee Winter Carnival Unlike participants in most of the other events at the carnival, the road racers won't have to pray for snow to keep their race alive. Clouse hopes the competition will feature a larger

gym expecting to see a nail-biting thriller of a game. They were there to see the no. 1 ranked Warsaw Lady Tigers in action. Warsaw’s girls lived up to their billing by thrashing Wawasee 83-21. The Lady Tigers showed their firepower early by exploding to a 25-0 lead after one quarter of play. They had size, speed and the depth to bring in 6-foot-2 inch Sam Snyder off the bench. “They play a good trap, they play a good half-court defense... They’re just smooth all over,” Hite said. The Lady Warriors faced another tall, tough team on Jan. 7 when they traveled to meet Fort Wayne Northrop. The score stood at 28-13 after one half of play but Northrop exploded in the second half and ended up winning by a score of 76-27. The junior varsity squad didn't fare any better in their last three games. They started off with a 40-17 loss to Warsaw and followed that with a 44-13 loss to Northrop and a 37-10 defeat at the hands of Goshen. The Lady Warriors stayed close in the Goshen game early, as they were behind only 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. The score stood at 14-6 at the half but Goshen's Lady Redskins put the game away in the second half. “We came out in a man-to-man (defense) and they pretty much tore us up right off the bat,” said coach Joy Swartzentruber. Paige Price whs Wawasee’s high score with six points, despite being benched one quarter in order to be eligible to play with the varsity. Price was high scorer in the other two games, as well.

amount of participants than it did th 1988. “We had 42 runners last year and we’re shooting for 50 this year." Clouse said. The race is divided into eight age categories for men and eight for women. The age brackets com sist of 10 and under. 18-20. 21-29, 30-39. 40-49 and 30 and over. ■ Last year's overall were Brian Shepherd of Ligonier and Pete Bowman of Angola. They conspired to cross the finish lineiogether and have been sharing the first-place trophy ever since. Trophies will be given to the first place winners in each men's and women's age groups. Registration begins at 8:30 a m. at Lakeside Park and preregistration can be done prior to January 21 by mailing in a race form and entry fee to Clouse Forms are available at various businesses, including sporting good stores and the State Bank of Svracuse

North Wood, NLC members Warsaw (8-0), Concord (6-0) and Plymouth (7-1) are all enjoying very successful seasons thus far. After facing unbeaten North Wood next Tuesday, Caldwell must prepare his troops for meets at Concord (Jan. 19) and at Warsaw (on Jan. 31) before the NLC meet is held on Feb. 9 and 11. “The upcoming Concord meet will be a showdown and Warsaw not only has a lot of talent but they also have depth on their team,” commented Caldwell. “We were a little flat in our victory over Penn last week but with our last seven meets in the next 20 days, we’ll be finding out what our team is really like,” concluded Caldwell with an eye towards the future.
