Hazel A. Persing • Hazel Anna Persing, 87, Miller’s Merry Manor, LaGrange, formerly of Sturgis, Mich., died Tuesday, Jan. 3,1989, at 12:35 p.m. in LaGrange Community Hospital. She was the mother of Robert Persing, North Webster. She was born in Mason, Mich., on October 23, 1901. She married Edward Persing bn May 19,1920, in Centreville, Mich. He preceded her in death on January 11,1973. Other survivors include three additional sons, Howard Persing, Howe, Roland Persing, Sturgis, Mich., and James Persing, Alma, Mich.; four daughters, Lois Boais, Constantine, Mich., Norma Beers and Frances Frohriep, both of Sturgis, Mich., and Carmen Randall, Elkhart; 15 grandchildren; and 23 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Milton, in 1936. Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, in Frurip-May Funeral Home, LaGrange. Rev. Carldean Merrifield officiated and burial followed in Jimtown Cemetery near Orland. Goldie E. Sumpter Services were held Friday, Jan. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, for Goldie E. Sumpter, 77, 2222 East Market St., Warsaw. She died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 1989, at 10:19 p.m. in Kosciusko Community HospitaL She was born in Syracuse on April 20,1911, to Jesse and Maude Johnson Miller. She was a lifetime resident of the Warsaw area, and had worked many years for Warsaw Laundry and Dry Cleaners. Surviving are two daughters, Patty Plew Shafer and Nancy Plew Miller, both of Warsaw; nine grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; four brothers, Milo and Russell Miller, both of

Craw, 79, r 1 box 16, Syracuse, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1989, at 10:18 a.m. in Gosher Hcrpital. : The son of John W. and Jessie Deering Craw, he was born in Champagne, 111., on February 9, 1909. On November 29, 1941, he married Anna E. Johnson. She survives. In 1955, he moved from South Whitley to Syracuse. He was a baker and member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. Surviving with his wife are one sister, Doris Cave, Sarasota, Fla.; and one brother, Ralph W. Craw, Phoenix, Ariz. Services were held Friday, Jan. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in EastlundHarris Funeral Home, Syracuse, with Rev. David Maish officiating. Burial was in South Whitley Cemetery. Miller Services were held yesterday, Tuesday, at 11 a.m. in Etna Green Church of Christ for Milo A. Miller, 84, Etna Green. He died Saturday, Jan. 7, 1989, at 5:15 a m. in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth. He had been ill for one year. He was the' brother of Mildred Nicolai and Charles (Bud) Miller, both of Syracuse. The son of Jessie and Suzanna Shock Miller, he was born in Syracuse on May 23, 1904. On September 4, 1959, he married Mary Holderman. She survives. In 1966, he retired frbm" Haas Wholesale in South Bend. For 29 years, he resided in the Etna Green area where he was a member of Etna Green Church of Christ. Also surviving are one daughter, Corlynn Shortz, Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada; one son, Bryce Miller, Richmond, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four additional sisters, Beatrice Wheatstone, Elkhart, Hazel Klingerman, Peru, Ethel LeCount, Elkhart, and Marilyn Hodgson, Goshen; two additional brothers, Russell Miller, Etna Green, and William (Bill) Miller, Elkhart; and several nieces and nephews.

She reportedly came through the surgery just fine and is expected to be hospitalized for the remainder of the week. Mrs. Grove is in Room 220. • Syracuse EMS The Syracuse Emergency Medical Service made the following ambulance runs this past week: The EMS was called to Commodore Corporation at 2:46 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4. Pete Negrete, 31, 4025 Saint Joseph, White Pigeon, Mich., was taken to Goshen Hospital. Adelaide Martin, 84, Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse, was transported from Goshe» Hospital to Miller’s Merry Manor on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9:56 a.nr Randall C. Smith, 14, 71 North Shore Dr., Syracuse, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital Friday, Jan. 6, after the EMS was called to Syracuse School at KT: 13 am. The EMS was called to a location at Grandview and Margaret Drives, Syracuse, at 3:04 a.m., Saturday, Jan 7. Okie Burnsworth, 64, 3833 E. 11th, Indianapolis, was taken to Goshen Hospital.
He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one granddaughter. Stan Hullah and Eugene Neyhart officiated at the services. Burial was in Etna Green Cemetery. Merkey, 91, Barbee Lake area, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 1989, at 1:27 p.m. in Miller’s Merry Manor, Fort Wayne. He was born in Wells County on February 24, 1897, to Levi and Lydia Ellen Houtz Merkey. He married Doris Valeria Campbell in Newport, Ky., on October 24, 1936. She survives. He was retired from Pennsylvania Railroad and farming, was a member of United Church of Christ, Bluffton, for more than 50 years, was a US Army veteran of World War I and a member of Grover Sheets American Legion Post, Bluffton. Surviving with his wife are one son, Donald Lockwood, Bluffton; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, in Goodwin Memorial Chapel, Bluffton, with Rev. Calvin Ley and Rev. O. Rex Lindemood officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton. Mervin W. Wagoner Mervin W. Wagoner, 72, PO Box 89, North Webster, died yesterday, Tuesday, at 8 a.m. in the Veteran’s Administration ‘Hospital, Fort Wayne, following an extended illness. He was born October 30,1916, in Marion, to Leslie H. and Emma Z. (Wolff) Wagoner. On March 3, 1940, he married Helen Miller. She survives.

Wagoner moved to North 'Webster in 1934 from Marion and retired from North Webster Products. He was a member of Salem Community Church, Wilmot, and American Legion Post 253, North Webster. Mrs. Smith owned and operated Smith’s Tavern in Waterloo since 1972. Prior to moving to Waterloo in 1972, she resided in the Milford area and was by the

FRIDAY, JAN. 6 An officer was sent to a Pittsburg Street home after it was reported that someone had possibly been in the house. Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was contacted after a person reported a vehicle in the ditch on CR 33, north of CR 52. The sheriff’s department asked to have the people go back to the scene. SATURDAY, JAN. 7 The names of two persons to contact were given to a caller who requested to know of someone who puts on pancake and sausage breakfasts. A person came to the dispatcher’s office to report an accident, he thought was a property damage accident near EastlundHarris Funeral Home Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was notified and the investigating officer requested that a person be contacted and told that a subject was in an accident and would be late for work. The officer also requested two wreckers at the scene The dispatcher also received a call from a person who reported having a subject detailed, who was in the accident and left the scene. SUNDAY, JAN. 8 The dispatcher received a call from a person who questioned the barricades on Syracuse Lake off of John Street. The caller was advised the barricades were from the surface ice rescue seminar yesterday. Police were notified by a person who reported going into his sister’s home and setting off the alarm The caller did not know how to shut off the alarm. The alarm did shut off while the caller was talking to the dispatcher. The dispatcher advised the caller to contact the telephone company and report everything was all right as well, as to the sheriff’s department the caller was also given the telephone number for the alarm maker to contact regarding resetting the alarm. MONDAY. JAN. 9 Police and the animal control officer are aware of a loose dog in the Portland Street area for the last three weeks A caller reported that black German Shepherd loose, however, authorities have not been able to catch it.
