Wrestlers close out •.'’ • . * ■ 1988 on a high note

ißy MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The Wawasee Warriors wrestling team saved its best for the last of 1988. coming through with an 11th place finish in a field of 28 teams at the Mishawaka Invitational on Dec 28 and 29. The Warriors received good efforts from their seasoned veterans and their improving beginners en route to the impressive performance. “I would have been happy if we would have made it in the top 20 and here we almost made it to the top 10. ' coach Dave VanLue said. <L... Garrett Ponciroli and Chad Jones led the way for the Warriors. Both of them compiled 5-1 records and finished third in their respective weight classes. Ponciroli won the battle for third with a 3-1 victory over Mishawaka's Steve Emmons. The Wawasee senior was knocked out of the championship hunt early on the second day of competition when he was pinned by Carl Gathright of Niles. Michigan. Warriors face Plymouth and West Noble this weekend

IBv SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer After more than a two week layoff from a competitive game situation and with the memories of a 2-6 start gone just like the year 1988. the Wawasee boys' basketball team will begin the 1989 portion of their schedule with a pair of games this weekend — Plymouth and West Noble. On Friday evening, the Warriors will travel west to face Coach Jack Edison and his 3-5 Plymouth squad Edison, in his 16th season as the mentor of the Pilgrim {earn, remarked that he is impressed with this season s version of the Wawasee team "Coach Goshert always does an outstanding job with his team and they're always ready to play, stated Edison “Wawasee has good balance with their inside-outside game and they also have some excellent ball handlers as well as some good depth on their team.'' said Edison, when' asked what concerns him about Friday's match-up. He added that the Warriors balance' on offense makes it difficult to lean in acer ; tain direction when trying to defensethem The probable Plymouth starters for the NLC contest, according to Edison, will be juniors Chad Wallace and Pat Dragani at the guards, 6-3 junior Tom Isenbarger in the pivot and seniors Doug Harris and Alex Plothow at the forward spots Harris and., Plothow are the leading scorers for the Pilgrims, both averaging around 10-11 points per game. " “We'll have to handle the defensive pressure that they'll apply on us and we have to be able to slow their offense down by containing them with our defense,” emphasized Edison about what the keys will be for his Pilgrim squad on Friday. On Saturday evening beginning with the junior varsity contest at 6:15 p.m., Wawasee will return to their home floor as they entertain the 4-3 West Noble Chargers. “Wawasee has a decent team and we're expecting a tough game from them," stated Coach Rick Mathew, who is in his third season as the “boss” of the Charger program. Mathew remarked that his team is one that tries to take advantage of what the other team will allow them to do. Mathew remarked that in order for his team /to be successful against Wawasee on Saturday they will have to handle the ball well on offense and will also have to be able to rebound with the taller Warriors “We just want to be close near the end of the game and then hopefully we’ll be able to execute,” said Mathew West Noble is led in scoring by 6-2 junior forward Doug Targgart who is averaging 16.3 points per game while also leading the team in rebounding. The two starting guards for the Chargers, Tony Quioo and Mike Becker, are also averaging in double figures' at 15.3 and 13.4 points-per-game respectively. After concluding the 1988 por-

award by scoring a 4-0 victoryover Chesterton's Jason Gonzales. VanLue said he wasn't surprised by Jones' performance. “I think he's the best athlete on my team myself. " VanLue said. "I look for him to get down to the state tournament. He's got that kind of ability. Other contributors to the Warrior effort were seniors Shawn Jones and Tom Mangas - Jones went 4-2* for the tournament en route to a fifth-place finish in the 119-pound division. Mangas compiled a 6-2 record while taking fifth in the 140-pound class. Van Lue said the performance of some of his less seasoned grapplers was instrumental to the Warriors' success. First-year wrestlers Jason Douglas and Cuong Reed notched two wins apiece in the 119-pound and the 135-pound classes respectively. T think some of the younger kids have learned and not made the same mistakes. " VanLue said. The fight for the tournament's team championship came down to a battle between the Chesterton Trojans and the Warsaw Tigers. Chesterton's boys came

tion of their season with a loss at . Mishawaka on Dec 17. Wawasee V will be looking to start the 12-game slate of the 1989 portion of the schedule with a pair of wins this coming weekend. Through the 2-6 start to the year, the Warriors have been paced in scoring by senior guard Matt Koble who has connected for an average of 15.6 po?nts-per-cont-est Wawasee has also received steady performances thus far in the season from ’ seniors Pete Bonner and Jeff Carey while 6-5 classmate Rob Huey exhibited some very imprbved play during the final couple of weeks before the holiday break. After watching the Warriors fall to 2-6 just before the holiday break. Goshert said that he was

Freshman eagers win fourth in a row

IBs SCOTT I) \ VIDSOX Sports Writer "I was pleased with our play and with the win but we're going to have to execute better and hit our ft*ee throws when we face some of the tougher'teams on our schedule in the next few weeks, stated Roger Brady. Wawasee boys' freshmen basketball coach, after watching his squad raise its season recrird to 4-4 with a 39-14 spanking of West .Noble on the road last night The freshmen eagers, winners of their last four games, were paced by Aaron Sincroft who tallied 12' points last night. Warriors Mason Robbins and Arie Dewees each contributed six points in last night's win while Robbins and teammate Kirk Dewart hauled in five rebounds each. "We played some good defense last nightjbjr- using a jump press that we've Been working on and we were able to force West Noble into a lot of turnovers." stated Brady. He added that the Warriors were also able to do a nice job of rebounding against the smaller West Noble squad Wawasee controlled last night's contest from the outset, leading 8-4 after the first quarter, 20-10 at the half. 26-14 at the conclusion of the third period and expanding the final margin of victory to 39-14 aftef outscoring the Chargers 13-0 in the game's lastquarter of play No field goal statistics from last night s Warrior win were available but the team connected on just 3-14 shots from the free throw line. “I was happy with the way that the guys played on the defensive end anef with the fact that we had soffit-scoring from some other people but we have to. do a better job from the charity stripe in the future,” remarked Brady. , ■ The freshmen Warriors will put their four game winning streak on the line tomorrow evening when they travel to face the V hitko Wildcats in a contest scheduled to tip-off at 6:30 p.m: “Whitko always has a,tough team atid they’ll be a challenge for us.' said Brady

Next on the list will be the East Noble Invitational on Saturday. The Warriors hope to set a strong precedent, there because that's where they will end up for sectional action. looking for the team members to get some of their old enthusiasm back, "We re looking to get consistent play from Six or seven guys during the second half of the season. Desperation shot sinks girl cogers

I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer A desperation shot at the end bf the first half set the tone for the Wawasee Lady Warriors 48-29 loss at Westview Tuesday. Wawasee's girls matched their opponents point for point until Julie Jensen heaved in a buzzer beating three-point bomb tomake the score 26-23. It turned out to be a very big basket because West view's LadyWarriors went into a stall offense to start Off the second half and turned the dide of the game Basketball rules state that a team has to be in the lead to legally execute a stall V ■ ' - -.. As the game slowed to a snail's pace Westview's girls, outscored Wawasee 10-0 in the third quarter Coach Jim Hite said the big problem for Wawasee was their offense, not the other team's. “We caused them to turiTover the ball but you still have to put the ball in the hole after you ca use those turnovers." he said. Bobi Stookey scored nine of her team-high 11 "points in the first half to keep Wawasee close The 5-foot-9 inch senior was a force on the boards as well, ending up with seven rebounds Kriss Eisenhour complemented Stookey’s efforts with five points and six rebounds for the game Wawasee's firsthalf effort centered on quickness

Swimming success continues at Wawasee

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer Off to a perfect 7-0 mark in dual meet competition, the Wqwasee boys' swim team is quickly on its way to another outstanding season for 11th year coach Tim Caldw ell. The Warriors have easily defeated Huntington (110-59). East Noble (*ll6-55), Tippecanoe Valley (124-35) and Penn (112-56) on the road while also chalking up wins over LaPorte (104-68). Elkhart Central < 90-82 ) and Mishawaka <IOB-62) in their home pool Although the Warriors have really only faced one tough opponent thus far in the 1988-89 campaign (versus Elkhart Central), their big "showdown'' will occur in their last dual meet of the season when they must travel to Warsaw on Tuesday. Jan 31. to face the conference rival Tigers, who also currently boast an undefeated record -■ Wawasee. owners of a 13-1 record and a conference cochampionship last season, faced some -question marks heading into this year. "We definitely have the quality of swimmers this year but we are down on our depth somewhat," said Caldwell before the season, started

The Lady Warriors led 17-15 at the half and enjoyed a four point lead at one point in the third quarter. Poor ball handling and 40 percent free throw shooting led to the team’s demise, however" i... . . IT guess I.didn't feel like it was one of our better games." coach Joy Swartzentfuber said Kern Speicher led the LadyWarriors with a 14-point effort The 5-foot-2-inch guard went six for nine from the field and hit both of her free throws. i “I saw her pull up and take her • shot more.” Swartzentruber said “I hope she continues to do that
